Playbook · Checkout language / translation wrong for Markets

Shopify checkout language wrong or stuck in English for Markets.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose checkout stays English (or the wrong locale) while Markets / Translate & Adapt already localizes the storefront — usually incomplete checkout / system Translate & Adapt rows, the buyer enters checkout from the primary English URL, browser locale fights the market language, or a Checkout UI extension / app injects English-only copy. DIY-first: prove Markets language + checkout translation coverage, fill Translate & Adapt checkout rows, enter checkout from the market URL, retest logged-out. Distinct from Markets currency / price wrong for country, duties / import taxes / DDP missing, tax wrong at checkout, and storefront Translate & Adapt missing strings. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Checkout language stuck in English — not Markets currency, duties, tax, storefront Translate & Adapt.

Several products can look like “checkout is still in English.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when hosted checkout UI (steps, field labels, Payment, Place order, express-pay chrome) shows the wrong language or falls back to English for a Markets buyer. Wrong currency or price for a country is Markets currency wrong. Missing duties / import taxes / DDP is duties and import taxes missing. Sales tax wrong or missing is tax wrong at checkout. Storefront theme / app strings missing while checkout is fine is Translate & Adapt missing strings. This page is only: checkout language / translation wrong or stuck in English for Markets.

Six ordinary reasons checkout stays English: the market is not assigned the expected language, Translate & Adapt checkout / system / Checkout UI coverage is incomplete, the buyer enters checkout from the primary English domain, browser Accept-Language or device locale fights the market language, Shop Pay / Apple Pay / Google Pay sheets are English while Shopify checkout is fine (or the reverse), or a Checkout UI extension / third-party app injects hard-coded English. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify Markets and Translate & Adapt. You do not need another seat to fill checkout translation rows.

02

Prove Markets language + Translate & Adapt checkout / system string coverage.

Settings → Markets → open the country / region buyers use → Languages / domains. Confirm that market includes the language you expect and note the market URL. Settings → Languages / Translate & Adapt → open Checkout, System, and any Checkout UI / checkout-related catalogs. Incomplete % coverage is the usual smoking gun for English Place order / Shipping / Payment labels even when the theme storefront looks localized.

Honest proof: if checkout UI is English while storefront FR/DE is fine, stay on this page. If prices / currency / rounding are wrong while language looks fine, leave for Markets currency wrong. If duties / DDP lines are missing, leave for duties and import taxes missing. If sales tax amounts are wrong, leave for tax wrong at checkout. If only storefront Add to cart / filters / apps are English while checkout is correct, leave for Translate & Adapt missing strings. Do not mix those proofs.

03

Incomplete checkout / Checkout UI / system Translate & Adapt rows.

Adding a Markets language does not auto-finish every checkout string. Hosted checkout, thank-you / order status chrome, and Checkout UI extension catalogs are separate from theme translation. Empty or “default” rows fall back to the primary language — usually English — so FR/DE buyers still see English Shipping method, Payment, billing fields, and Place order.

Fix: Translate & Adapt → filter Incomplete / Untranslated for Checkout and System. Fill or auto-translate missing rows. Repeat for Checkout UI extensions and checkout apps that render buyer copy. Save. Retest by starting checkout from the market URL in logged-out Incognito. Do not confuse this with blank storefront theme rows — that is Translate & Adapt missing strings.

04

Browser locale, market URL, and Shop Pay / accelerated checkout surfaces.

Shopify checkout language follows the market / locale context of the session more than the theme preview you stared at. Entering checkout from the primary English domain, an English cart link in email, or a staff session can keep English chrome even when the FR market storefront looks perfect. Browser Accept-Language and device locale can also bias language selection when market routing is incomplete. Separately: Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay sheets often follow wallet / OS language — judging “checkout is English” from only the wallet sheet is a false fail if Shopify checkout itself is localized.

Fix: open the exact market URL buyers use → add to cart → checkout in logged-out Incognito. Prefer a clean profile with the target language as browser language when debugging. Compare Shopify hosted checkout language vs Shop Pay / Apple Pay / Google Pay sheets separately. Hard refresh. If Shop Pay / Apple Pay / Google Pay buttons are missing entirely, that is a different product (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay). If currency is wrong while language is correct, leave for Markets currency wrong.

05

Checkout UI extensions / apps injecting English-only copy.

Checkout Extensibility apps, tip / upsell / delivery-date / gift-message extensions, and custom Checkout UI blocks often ship with English default strings and their own Translate & Adapt catalogs — or hard-coded English with no locale files. Native Shopify checkout can be fully localized while one extension block still reads English mid-flow, which buyers report as “checkout is stuck in English.”

Fix: Settings → Checkout → list active Checkout UI extensions / apps. Disable non-essential ones briefly and retest. Translate each remaining extension’s catalog in Translate & Adapt (or the app’s own locale settings). After Checkout Extensibility upgrades, re-verify thank-you / order status extension strings too — that upgrade path is checkout extensibility upgrade broken when the surface itself fails, not when only language is wrong.

06

You tested Markets currency, duties, tax wrong, or storefront missing strings instead.

Markets currency / price wrong for a country is Markets currency wrong. Duties / import taxes / DDP missing is duties and import taxes missing. Sales tax wrong or missing is tax wrong at checkout. Storefront theme / app English fallback while checkout is fine is Translate & Adapt missing strings.

The only honest test for this page: checkout language is wrong or stuck in English for a Markets buyer — prove market language + Translate & Adapt checkout coverage, fill checkout / system / extension rows, enter checkout from the market URL, separate wallet-sheet language from Shopify checkout, hard-refresh logged-out. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove Markets language assignment, fill Translate & Adapt checkout / system / Checkout UI rows, enter checkout from the market URL, separate wallet-sheet language from Shopify checkout, and stop confusing Markets currency / duties / tax / storefront strings with checkout English fallback. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the Translate & Adapt checkout row — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever localization-proof checkout guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
