Playbook · Shopify Tax / sales tax wrong or missing at checkout
Shopify Tax / sales tax wrong or missing at checkout — nexus, product tax codes, Markets, overrides.
Written for a Shopify owner or ops lead whose sales tax is wrong or missing at checkout — usually nexus / registration is incomplete, product tax codes are wrong, Markets tax is off for a country, shipping is taxed incorrectly, or an override zeros the line. DIY-first: prove Taxes and duties, prove product tax codes, prove Markets and overrides, then run one address in a nexus state and one outside. Distinct from Markets currency / price wrong, checkout shipping rates wrong, discount code not applying, Functions / automatic discount not applying, and POS inventory not syncing. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01
Tax wrong/missing at checkout — not Markets currency, shipping rates, discounts, Functions, POS sync.
Several products can look like “checkout totals are wrong.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when Estimated tax / Tax is $0 when you expect a rate, charges the wrong jurisdiction rate, or never appears for a nexus address — missing registration, wrong product tax codes, Markets tax off, or overrides. Wrong country currency or converted price is Markets currency wrong. Missing / wrong carrier rates are checkout shipping rates wrong. Typed promo codes that refuse are discount code not applying. Silent automatic / Functions discounts are Functions discount not applying. Retail↔online stock is POS inventory not syncing. This page is only: Shopify Tax / sales tax wrong or missing at checkout.
Six ordinary reasons tax stays wrong: region not collecting / nexus incomplete, Shopify Tax (or manual rates) not active for that region, product tax code wrong for clothing / food / digital / shipping, Markets country tax disabled, override row forcing 0% or a flat wrong rate, or you are debugging currency / shipping / discounts / POS instead. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify. You do not need another tax SaaS to read Taxes and duties and one test checkout.
02
Prove nexus / registration and Shopify Tax (or manual regions).
Shopify only collects where you tell it you have an obligation. If the state / province / country is not marked Collecting (or registration / nexus is incomplete under Shopify Tax), checkout shows $0 tax even when the customer address is in that region. That is configuration, not a broken checkout. Open Settings → Taxes and duties. Confirm the regions you remittance for, and whether Shopify Tax is managing rates or you still use manual regions / rates.
Honest proof: place a test checkout to a known nexus ZIP / postal code with a taxable product and no discount. Read the Tax line. Then place the same cart to a non-nexus address. If both are $0, you are not collecting where you think. If only non-nexus is $0, tax is working — leave Markets currency and shipping rates alone. This playbook is not legal advice on where you owe; it is the settings path that makes the Tax line appear when you intend to collect.
03
Product tax codes — clothing, food, digital, shipping line.
Shopify Tax (and many manual setups) rate by product tax code. Clothing exemptions, grocery / food categories, digital goods, and “shipping taxed as shipping” vs “shipping taxed as product” change the Tax line even when nexus is correct. A SKU still on the default code, a gift card treated like merchandise, or a shipping rate that should be taxable but is marked nontaxable produces “tax missing” tickets that are product classification, not nexus.
Honest proof: open the product → tax / Shopify Tax code. Confirm the category matches what you sell. Retest checkout with that one SKU and a blank cart. Then check Settings → Shipping and delivery (or Taxes) for whether shipping is taxed in that region. Do not invent a second tax app while the product tax code is still wrong. Discount lines that remove taxable subtotal are discount code / Functions discount territory — fix tax codes first, then re-check discounts.
04
Markets tax settings and overrides that zero or inflate tax.
International Markets can disable tax collection for a country, include / exclude tax in displayed prices, or use a different duty / tax path than your domestic region. Override rows under Taxes and duties (region, product group, or shipping) can force 0% or a flat rate that looks “wrong” relative to Shopify Tax defaults. Price lists and currency conversion are not tax — leave those for Markets currency wrong when the currency symbol or converted price is the complaint.
Honest proof: Settings → Markets → open the market for the buyer country → Taxes / duties / include tax in price. Then Taxes and duties → Overrides: remove or correct any row that matches the product / region under test. Retest with the same address. Carrier rate silence is checkout shipping rates wrong— a missing shipping option is not a missing tax line.
05
You tested Markets currency, shipping rates, discount codes, Functions discount, or POS sync instead.
Wrong currency / converted price is Markets currency wrong. Missing carrier rates are checkout shipping rates wrong. Typed codes that refuse are discount code not applying. Automatic / Functions discounts that stay silent are Functions discount not applying. Retail inventory not matching online is POS inventory not syncing. None of those fix missing nexus, a wrong product tax code, or a Markets / override row that zeros tax.
Finish the tax proofs first. Only then open the related playbook that matches the remaining symptom.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: register / collect in the regions you intend, confirm Shopify Tax or manual rates, fix product tax codes and shipping tax, clear Markets tax and override mistakes, prove one nexus and one non-nexus checkout, and stop confusing currency / shipping / discounts / POS with a tax failure. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the Taxes and duties toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.
Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever tax-compliance guarantee, legal nexus advice, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
