Playbook · Shop Pay / accelerated checkout missing

Shop Pay / accelerated checkout button missing on product or cart — Shopify Payments, Markets, theme.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Shop Pay (or Apple Pay / Google Pay accelerated checkout) button never appears on the product page or cart — buyers only see “Add to cart” / “Check out,” not the wallet row. DIY-first: prove Shopify Payments eligibility, Markets coverage, theme dynamic checkout buttons, and product / app exclusions. Distinct from Shopify Payments card declined, discount code not applying, checkout shipping rates wrong, and payment pending email not sending. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Shop Pay / accelerated checkout missing — not card declined, not discount codes, not shipping rates, not payment pending.

Several products can look like “checkout will not take the wallet.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when Shop Pay or accelerated checkout buttons are missing on the product page or cart. Cards that appear but decline at a high rate are Shopify Payments card declined. Promo codes that reject are discount code not applying. Blank or wrong rate lists at checkout are checkout shipping rates wrong. Authorization / payment-pending mail silence is payment pending email not sending. This page is only: Shop Pay / accelerated checkout button not showing.

Seven ordinary reasons the wallet row vanishes: Shopify Payments not eligible or Shop Pay disabled, Markets / country / currency blocking wallets, theme sections with dynamic checkout buttons off, product types or apps that hide Shop Pay, subscription / gift-card / draft-order paths, browser or Shop account quirks, or you are debugging declines / discounts / rates / pending mail instead of the missing button. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify. You do not need another checkout SaaS seat to turn the button back on.

02

Prove the button is missing vs declined vs hidden by product type.

Open a simple one-variant product (not a subscription, not a gift card) in an incognito window on desktop and mobile. Look at the product form and the cart drawer / cart page for Shop Pay, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Screenshot: button present or absent, Market / currency shown, logged-out state. Compare to a peer store that shows Shop Pay so you know what “present” looks like in your browser.

Honest proof: if the button is missing entirely, stay on this page. If the button shows and the card or wallet then fails, that is Shopify Payments card declined. If checkout opens but rates are blank, that is checkout shipping rates wrong. Do not mix those three proofs.

03

Shopify Payments eligibility and Shop Pay toggle.

Shop Pay rides on Shopify Payments (or an eligible Payments setup for your store country). If Shopify Payments is not activated, is paused, is incomplete KYC, or Shop Pay is toggled off under Settings → Payments, accelerated checkout buttons will not render — even if your theme “supports” them. Third-party gateways alone often do not surface Shop Pay the same way.

Fix: Settings → Payments. Confirm Shopify Payments is live (not test-only / not pending). Confirm Shop Pay is enabled. Complete any identity / bank prompts. Retest the same product in incognito. If Payments is fine and cards decline after the button appears, switch playbooks to Shopify Payments card declined.

04

Markets, country, and currency blocking wallets.

Markets control which payment methods buyers see per country / currency. A Market launched with only COD, bank deposit, or a limited gateway will hide Shop Pay and other wallets. Currency mismatches, domain / language configs, and “include / exclude” country lists also make the button appear for you (home Market) and vanish for international visitors.

Fix: for each live Market, open Payments / checkout methods and confirm Shopify Payments + Shop Pay (and Apple / Google Pay where eligible) are on. Test with a VPN or Markets preview for a country where the button is reported missing. COD-only Markets are not a Shop Pay bug — confirmation mail for those orders is a different product. Promo rejection at the same checkout is discount code not applying.

05

Theme product / cart dynamic checkout buttons.

Online Store 2.0 themes expose “dynamic checkout buttons” (or “accelerated checkout”) on the product form and sometimes the cart. If that setting is off, the theme uses a custom buy button without the Shop Pay block, or a section does not include payment_button / dynamic checkout, the wallet row never renders. App blocks that replace Add to cart can also omit accelerated checkout.

Fix: Theme editor → product template → product information / buy buttons → enable dynamic checkout buttons. Check cart drawer / cart page the same way. Compare to Dawn (or your theme’s default product section) on a duplicate theme. Publish only after a logged-out product + cart screenshot shows Shop Pay. Custom liquid that hard-codes checkout without dynamic buttons will keep failing until you restore the native block.

06

Product types, apps, and subscriptions that hide Shop Pay.

Gift cards, some subscription / Selling Plan products, try-before / preorder apps, draft-order-only SKUs, and certain custom apps disable accelerated checkout on purpose. Mixed carts (Shop Pay-eligible + ineligible line) can drop the wallet button for the whole cart. Inventory / purchase options that require a custom checkout also hide Shop Pay.

Fix: test a plain one-time SKU with no selling plan and no gift card. If Shop Pay returns there but not on the subscription SKU, the subscription app’s checkout path is the owner — not Payments “broken.” Remove one app at a time on a duplicate theme if an upsell / bundle app replaced the buy box. Shipping rates that fail after Shop Pay opens are checkout shipping rates wrong, not a missing-button bug.

07

Browser, device, and Shop account / wallet quirks.

Apple Pay only appears in Safari / supported Apple devices with a wallet card. Google Pay needs a supported browser and Google account. Shop Pay still needs Shopify Payments + theme buttons, but some browsers with aggressive tracking blockers, old theme JS errors, or password managers that break checkout scripts can hide or break the row. Logged-in Shop customers may see different chrome than logged-out visitors.

Fix: retest Safari (Apple Pay), Chrome (Google Pay / Shop Pay), and a clean mobile Safari / Chrome session. Disable one extension class at a time. Check the browser console for theme JS errors on the product form. Payment-pending mail after an auth hold is payment pending email not sending — only after a payment attempt actually started.

08

You tested card declined, discount codes, shipping rates, or payment pending instead.

High decline rates after the button appears are Shopify Payments card declined. Promo codes that will not apply are discount code not applying. Blank or wrong checkout rates are checkout shipping rates wrong. Authorization / payment-pending mail silence is payment pending email not sending.

The only honest test for this page: product + cart screenshots with Shop Pay / accelerated checkout absent or present, Payments + Shop Pay toggles, Markets methods, theme dynamic checkout settings, and product / app eligibility. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove missing vs declined, confirm Shopify Payments + Shop Pay, align Markets methods, turn on theme dynamic checkout buttons, and isolate product / app / browser quirks. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the Shop Pay toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, checkout-ready and payment exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a Shop Pay guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, Shop Pay on every SKU forever, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
