Shopify collection filters not working.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose collection faceted filters / filter sidebar are broken or empty — storefront filtering disabled, Search & Discovery Filters empty or unpublished, theme filter / facets UI unbound on Current, or metafield filter sources with no product values. DIY-first: prove storefront filtering vs Search & Discovery vs theme filter UI vs metafield filters; repair the live path; retest on the live collection. Distinct from color / variant swatches missing, collection quick view / quick add broken, storefront predictive search empty or wrong, and the collection sort dropdown (Featured / Best selling / Price) — sorting is not filtering. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Collection faceted filters / filter sidebar broken or empty — not color swatches, not quick view, not search, not collection sorting.

Several collection surfaces can look like “filters are broken.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when the filter sidebar / faceted filters are missing, empty, or never change the product grid on a collection (storefront filtering, Search & Discovery, theme filter UI, metafield filters). Color / variant swatches on PDP or cards are shopify-color-swatches-not-showing. Collection Quick view / Quick add modals are shopify-quick-view-not-working. Storefront predictive search / search results empty or wrong is storefront-search-not-returning. The Featured / Best selling / Price sort control is collection sorting — not this playbook. An older broader filters write-up lives at collection-filters-not-working; Search & Discovery–only empty Filters/boosts is search-and-discovery-filters-empty.

02

Prove storefront filtering vs Search & Discovery vs theme filter UI vs metafield filters on a live collection.

Open a live collection URL with enough products to facet — not only Theme editor preview. Capture four proofs before you install another filter app:

  1. Online Store → Preferences (or Settings → Search & Discovery / storefront filtering): is storefront filtering / collection filtering enabled for the live shop?
  2. Apps → Search & Discovery → Filters: are filters published with availability / price / product options / metafield sources that actually have values on products in this collection?
  3. Customize Current → collection template: is the Facets / Filters / Filter sidebar section present and enabled on the published theme (not only a draft)?
  4. Settings → Custom data → Products: for each metafield used as a filter, is it filterable, and do products in the collection have values? Empty sources render an empty sidebar even when the UI is on.

If you only tested color swatches on cards, a quick-view modal, the search box, or the sort dropdown, you are on the wrong playbook.

03

Storefront filtering off, or Search & Discovery Filters empty / unpublished / wrong sources.

Native collection facets need storefront filtering enabled and Search & Discovery Filters published. After a theme swap, Markets duplicate, or app uninstall, storefront filtering can flip off, or Filters can sit in draft with zero sources. Published filters whose sources have no product values (empty vendor, unused product type, metafield never filled) render an empty sidebar that looks “broken.” Boosts scoped to the wrong collection are a separate S&D surface — chase search-and-discovery-filters-empty when Filters/boosts specifically never apply.

Fix path: enable storefront filtering → Search & Discovery → Filters → add Availability, Price, Product options, and any filterable metafields that have values → Publish → retest the live collection URL with DevTools Network: filter clicks should change the collection query / section rendering, not only the sort param.

04

Theme filter sidebar unbound on Current, or metafield filter sources empty.

Online Store 2.0 themes gate the sidebar behind a Facets / Filters section (or a “Enable filtering” checkbox on the collection template). After a developer paste or section-group edit, that section can vanish from Current while Search & Discovery still looks fine in admin — empty theme UI, live filters in the app. Separately, metafield filters need the definition marked filterable and product values filled; a namespace.key mismatch or draft-only values leaves the facet blank.

Fix path: Customize Current → collection → add / enable Facets or Filters → Save / Publish Current. Settings → Custom data → mark metafields filterable → fill values on products in the collection → re-publish Search & Discovery Filters that reference those sources. Theme editor publish failures are theme-editor-publish-failing. Generic product metafields not rendering on the PDP are product-metafields-not-showing. Faceted URL crawl waste is shopify-crawl-budget-wasted-facets— a SEO crawl issue, not an empty sidebar.

05

Filter apps fighting the theme, or CSS / consent hiding the sidebar.

Third-party filter / boost apps (App embed + theme app block) can replace or blank the native facets: embed off on Current, enabled only on a draft, scoped to Markets the buyer is not in, or set to replace native while the theme still renders an empty sidebar. Custom CSS, sticky headers, or cookie / consent banners can also set the facets drawer to display:none / pointer-events:none on mobile — filters “exist” in the DOM but buyers never see them.

Fix path: Theme settings → App embeds → enable one filter app on Current (or disable the app and use native Search & Discovery + theme facets only) → Save. Customize Current → place the app’s filter block where docs say → Save. Temporarily disable the second filter app. Inspect the live collection for CSS / consent hides. Generic App embeds failing across many apps is app-embed-not-loading. Consent banners blocking storefront clicks are cookie-banner-blocking-checkout.

06

You tested color swatches, quick view, storefront search, or collection sorting instead.

Color / variant swatches missing is shopify-color-swatches-not-showing. Collection quick view / quick add broken is shopify-quick-view-not-working. Storefront predictive search empty or wrong is storefront-search-not-returning. Featured / Best selling / Price / Newest sort is collection sorting — change the sort control and the grid order changes without opening a filter sidebar; that is not this page.

The only honest test for this page: on a live collection, the filter sidebar / faceted filters are missing, empty, or clicking a facet never changes the product grid — fixable with storefront filtering on, Search & Discovery Filters published with live sources, theme filter UI on Current, filled metafield filter values, and one filter path (native or one app) without CSS / consent hide — not color swatches alone, not quick view alone, not the search box alone, not the sort dropdown alone. Capture storefront filtering + S&D + theme UI + metafields, fix the path. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if storefront filtering is on, Search & Discovery Filters are published with sources that have values, the theme filter sidebar is enabled on Current, metafield filters have product values, and facets change the live grid. That is ordinary Shopify admin + theme work.

Pay $997 when the gap is wiring: lead capture, ops alerts, and a checkout-ready workflow on the stack you already pay for, installed in 72 hours after collaborator access lands. Latch does not sell an earnings, conversion, or filter-click lift number. Latch does not rebuild your theme’s filter UI as a design agency. One live store. Clock starts when collaborator access is in.
