Playbook · theme editor publish / save failing

Shopify theme editor publish / save failing or changes not live — JSON template errors, app blocks, draft theme.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Online Store theme editor Save or Publish fails, or whose section / template edits never appear on the live storefront — usually invalid JSON templates, a broken app block, or editing a draft / duplicated theme while the Current theme stays untouched. DIY-first: prove draft vs live, read the red toast, repair JSON / remount app blocks, Publish the theme you actually edited. Distinct from theme / design agency hire vs install, cart drawer not updating, variant picker not updating, megamenu not opening, and announcement bar not showing. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Theme editor Save / Publish failing — not theme agency, cart drawer, variant picker, megamenu, announcement bar.

Several products can look like “my theme will not update.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when Online Store → Themes → Customize refuses Save / Publish, shows a JSON or app-block error, or the live storefront still shows the old layout after you thought you published. Hiring a theme / design agency instead of an ops install is theme agency vs ops. AJAX cart / drawer that does not refresh after add-to-cart is cart drawer not updating. Swatches / variant UI that does not update price or image is variant picker not updating. Header dropdown that will not open is megamenu not opening. Promo / free-shipping bar missing or stuck closed is announcement bar not showing. This page is only: theme editor Save / Publish failing or changes not live.

Six ordinary reasons Save / Publish fails or changes stay invisible: invalid templates/*.json or section-group JSON after a paste / merge, a broken theme app block or uninstalled app still referenced in the template, you customized a draft / duplicated theme while Current stayed live, staff role missing Themes publish permission, browser / CDN cache showing the old asset while the theme did publish, or you are debugging cart drawer / variant picker / megamenu / announcement bar / agency hire instead. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify Online Store. You do not need another seat to get Save working.

02

Prove draft vs live theme and capture the Save / Publish error toast.

Online Store → Themes. Note which row says Current / Published. Open Customize on that theme (or the copy you intended). Attempt Save. Screenshot any red toast (“Unable to save”, “Invalid JSON”, “App block unavailable”, permission denied). If Save works but the marketed URL still looks old, open the storefront in a logged-out Incognito window with hard refresh and compare Theme → Customize preview vs live.

Honest proof: if the editor itself refuses Save / Publish, or Save succeeds on a non-Current theme while live stays unchanged, stay on this page. If the live theme already has the section but a single widget misbehaves (cart drawer, swatches, megamenu, announcement bar), leave for that widget’s playbook. If the question is whether to hire a theme agency for a redesign, leave for theme agency vs ops. Do not mix those proofs.

03

JSON template errors blocking Save — templates/*.json, section groups, invalid schema.

Online Store 2.0 themes store page layouts as JSON. A missing comma, an unknown section type after a theme update, a hand-edited templates/index.json or sections/header-group.json, or a merge from a backup can make the editor refuse Save. Theme Check / the editor toast usually names the file and line.

Fix: open Online Store → Themes → … → Edit code (or pull the theme with Shopify CLI). Open the named JSON file. Validate JSON (no trailing commas, matching braces). Restore the section from a known good copy or the theme’s default template if you are unsure. Save the file, return to Customize, retry Save / Publish. Do not paste Liquid into a JSON template. A storefront widget bug with valid JSON is a different product — cart drawer, variant picker, megamenu, and announcement bar each have their own pages.

04

Broken app blocks / theme app extensions that refuse Save or blank the preview.

Reviews, wishlist, size chart, upsell, and loyalty apps often inject theme app blocks. After an uninstall, plan change, or app update, the template may still reference a block that no longer loads. The editor preview goes blank or Save fails with an app block / extension error even though the rest of the theme is fine.

Fix: in Customize, open the template that fails. Remove unavailable app blocks (or reinstall / remount the app and re-add the block). Disable suspect App embeds under Theme settings → App embeds one at a time. Retry Save after each change. If Save works and the live page only misbehaves for one widget, leave for that widget’s playbook — for example announcement bar not showing or megamenu not opening— instead of treating it as a Publish failure.

05

You edited a draft / unpublished / duplicated theme while the live storefront stays on the old Current theme.

Shopify lets you Customize unpublished copies. Save on a draft succeeds and the preview looks perfect — then buyers still see the old Current theme because nobody clicked Publish. Staff with limited Themes permissions may be able to edit a copy but not publish. CDN / browser cache can also make a successful Publish look “stuck” for a few minutes on one device.

Fix: Themes list — confirm the theme you edited is Current, or click Publish on that row after Save. Have an owner / full Themes role publish if your staff login cannot. Retest logged-out Incognito and on a phone. Hard refresh. If Publish already happened and only one storefront control is wrong, that is not a draft-theme problem — use the matching widget playbook. Hiring an agency for a full redesign is still theme agency vs ops, not this Save / Publish checklist.

06

You tested theme agency hire, cart drawer, variant picker, megamenu, or announcement bar instead.

“Should we hire a theme / design agency?” is theme agency vs ops. Cart / AJAX drawer not refreshing is cart drawer not updating. Swatches / variant price-image not updating is variant picker not updating. Header megamenu / dropdown not opening is megamenu not opening. Promo / announcement bar missing or stuck closed is announcement bar not showing.

The only honest test for this page: Customize Save / Publish fails with a toast or JSON / app-block error, or Save succeeds on a non-Current theme / fails to appear logged-out after Publish. Repair JSON, remount or remove broken app blocks, Publish the theme you edited, hard-refresh. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove draft vs live, capture the Save toast, repair JSON templates, remount or remove broken app blocks, Publish the correct theme, and stop confusing theme agency hire / cart drawer / variant picker / megamenu / announcement bar with a Save / Publish failure. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the theme-editor row — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever Save-proof theme guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
