Playbook · Collection filters / facets not working

Shopify collection filters / facets not working or empty — storefront filtering, metafields, theme sections.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose collection sidebar filters, facet chips, or sort-and-filter UI stay empty, never change the product grid, or filter to zero results when products clearly match — usually storefront filtering / Search & Discovery not exposing the facet, product metafields without filterable definitions or values, or a theme collection section that never mounts the facets block. DIY-first: prove URL params vs grid, check storefront filtering and metafields, isolate theme sections and apps. Distinct from product variant picker / swatches not updating, cart drawer / AJAX cart not updating, and theme agency vs ops install. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Collection filters / facets — not variant picker, cart drawer, or theme agency.

Several products can look like “something on the storefront is broken.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when Shopify collection filters or facets are empty, stuck, or do not change the product grid. A stuck product variant picker or swatches UI is variant picker / swatches not updating. A stale cart drawer after a successful add is cart drawer / AJAX cart not updating. Hiring a theme shop vs the install is theme agency vs ops install. This page is only: collection / storefront filtering and facets.

Seven ordinary reasons filters look dead: storefront filtering never enabled for that facet type, Search & Discovery filters not published to the storefront, metafield definition not marked filterable or products missing values, collection has no products matching the facet value, theme facets / filters section missing or unbound after a theme edit, a filter / search app fighting the theme, or you are debugging variant picker / cart drawer / theme agency quotes instead. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify. You do not need another filter-app seat to straighten the facets that already exist.

02

Prove filter click changed URL / params while the product grid stayed stuck.

On a collection with visible filter chips or a sidebar, open DevTools → Network. Click a size, color, price, or metafield facet. Confirm the address bar updates with filter query params (often filter.v. / filter.p. style, or the theme’s own param names). Screenshot product count and first-row cards before and after. Note whether params changed while the grid stayed identical — or whether the facet list itself is empty.

Honest proof: if the URL / filter params changed and the grid did not, stay on this page — that is a theme section / Sections API / app conflict. If the facet list is empty while products clearly have the attribute, fix storefront filtering and metafield definitions first. If option clicks on a product page leave price / image stuck, leave this page for variant picker / swatches not updating. If Add to cart works but the cart drawer stays stale, use cart drawer / AJAX cart not updating. Do not mix those proofs.

03

Storefront filtering / Search & Discovery and which facets are enabled.

Shopify storefront filtering (often managed in Search & Discovery) controls which availability, price, product type, vendor, tag, and metafield facets the storefront can expose. A theme can only render facets that storefront filtering has enabled. A facet that looks “broken” is often simply never published — or was turned off after a catalog cleanup.

Fix: in admin, open Search & Discovery (or Online Store → Navigation / Filtering, depending on your Shopify plan UI) and confirm the filters you expect are enabled for the storefront. Publish / save. Retest the live collection in an incognito window. A full theme redesign quote is still theme agency vs ops install— this page is the filter configuration, not a brand job.

04

Product metafields, filterable definitions, and empty facet values.

Metafield-backed facets need three pieces: a metafield definition marked for storefront filtering, values present on products that sit in the collection, and enough distinct values to build a facet list. A definition that exists only as a draft, or products that never received the metafield value, yields an empty facet even when the theme section is correct.

Fix: Settings → Custom data → Products — confirm the definition type is filterable and storefront-visible. Spot-check 5–10 products in the collection for filled values. Reindex / wait for storefront filtering to catch up after bulk edits. Variant media and combined-listings issues on the product page still belong on variant picker / swatches not updating— that is product options, not collection facets.

05

Theme collection sections, facets block, and Sections API refresh.

Dawn-family and most Online Store 2.0 themes render filters inside a collection template section (facets, filters drawer, or sidebar). A theme edit that removed the facets block, renamed the section id the Sections API expects, or broke the filter form’s fetch / section rendering leaves filter clicks updating the URL while the product grid never re-renders — or never shows the facet list at all.

Fix: in Theme editor, open the collection template and confirm the filters / facets section is enabled on the live theme. Check console for uncaught errors on filter click. Restore the stock facets / main-collection-product-grid snippets from the theme’s original version if a freelancer deleted the listener. Cart drawer Section API bugs after add-to-cart are still cart drawer / AJAX cart not updating— different surface from collection facets.

06

Filter / search / merchandising apps fighting the theme.

Collection filter apps, search overlays, merchandising UIs, and “smart collection” widgets often replace or wrap the theme’s filter events. Two owners on the same facet click can update the URL while neither grid refreshes — or one shows an empty app drawer while native facets are disabled. An app left installed after you switched back to native storefront filtering is a common silent conflict.

Fix: disable filter / search / merchandising apps one at a time on a development theme. Retest facets with only the theme filters. Keep one owner. If the “broken” thing was actually the product variant picker, leave this page for variant picker / swatches not updating. A theme redesign retainer is still theme agency vs ops— different product from empty facets after a successful filter config.

07

You tested variant picker, cart drawer, or theme agency instead.

Stuck product variant picker / swatches is variant picker / swatches not updating. Stale cart drawer / AJAX cart after add is cart drawer / AJAX cart not updating. Theme redesign / agency retainers vs the install is theme agency vs ops install.

The only honest test for this page: facet list is populated, filter click changes URL / params, product grid refreshes to the matching set, metafield-backed facets have definitions and values, console is clean through the section refresh, and only one filter / facets owner is installed. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove filter params vs stuck grid, enable storefront filtering, fix metafield definitions and values, restore theme facets sections, and clear competing filter apps. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the facet toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, perfect collection filters forever, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
