Playbook · Shopify subscription box skip / pause failing

Skip next order or pause should work in the portal — and it does not.

Written for a Shopify DTC or subscription-box owner whose skip next order, pause, or related portal actions fail in the customer portal or subscription app (Shopify Subscriptions / Recharge / Skio / Smartrr) — skip policy / cutoff blocking the action, past_due locking the contract, portal App embed or customer account UI off on Current, API 4xx on Skip/Pause, customer logged into the wrong account — or you chased subscription billing attempt failed / dunning, customer account UI extension missing, or customer accounts login broken instead. DIY-first: prove contract → portal action → app logs → policies → retest. Distinct from subscription billing attempt failed, customer account UI extension missing, and customer accounts login broken. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

Skip / pause failing — not billing attempt failed, customer account UI extension, or customer accounts login.

Several “subscription / portal” products can look like “skip is broken.” They do not share a fix. This page is only when skip next order, pause, or a related portal action fails for an already-active subscription. Failed billing attempts / dunning not recovering is shopify-subscription-billing-attempt-failed. New customer accounts UI extension / portal blocks not mounting is shopify-customer-account-ui-extension-missing. Customer accounts login broken / redirect loop is shopify-customer-accounts-login-broken.

Soft links when the bug is adjacent: selling plan / subscribe widget never shows on the PDP is shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. Subscription renewal emails never send is subscription-renewal-email-not-sending. App vs install comparison is subscription-app-vs-ops-install. This playbook stays on logged-in subscriber → Skip / Pause in portal or app → action errors or never updates the contract.

02

Prove contract state, portal action, and app / API path.

Open the subscription / contract in Shopify Subscriptions, Recharge, Skio, or Smartrr for the customer who reported the failure. Confirm status is Active (not cancelled), note next billing date, skip / pause / delay policies, minimum cycles before skip, and cutoff hours before charge. Past_due / failed payment often locks portal actions even when the Skip button still renders.

Confirm the customer is logged into the same customer record that owns the contract. Reproduce Skip next order and Pause in the customer portal (or the app’s managed portal). Capture the exact toast / error code, Network tab 4xx/5xx on the skip/pause endpoint, or silent no-op. Screenshot whether the button is disabled vs clickable.

Confirm the subscription portal App embed / customer account UI extension / theme block is enabled on the live (Current) theme or new customer accounts profile — not only on a draft. Soft-check selling-plan presence on PDP only if the customer never subscribed; that is a different playbook.

03

Repair policies, portal wiring, contract state — then retest.

Align skip / pause / delay policies with the on-site promise (min cycles, max skips per year, cutoff hours). Clear past_due by recovering the payment method or manually advancing dunning if that is what locks Skip — then return here once the contract is Active again. Re-enable the portal App embed / customer account UI extension on Current.

If the app owns the portal, confirm OAuth / API scopes for subscription mutations are still granted after an app update. Disable one conflicting customer-account / loyalty / upsell app at a time if Skip only fails when that app is on. Retest Skip next order and Pause as the subscriber and confirm next billing date / status update in admin.

Soft notes: if the failure is only failed charges / dunning, use shopify-subscription-billing-attempt-failed. If the portal block never mounts, use shopify-customer-account-ui-extension-missing. If login never reaches the portal, use shopify-customer-accounts-login-broken.

04

You tested billing attempt failed, customer account UI extension, or customer accounts login instead.

Billing attempt failed / dunning is shopify-subscription-billing-attempt-failed. Customer account UI extension missing is shopify-customer-account-ui-extension-missing. Customer accounts login broken is shopify-customer-accounts-login-broken. Selling plan widget not showing is shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. Renewal email not sending is subscription-renewal-email-not-sending.

The only honest test for this page: logged-in subscriber with an Active contract → Skip next order (and Pause) in the live portal → action succeeds or returns a clear policy error you can fix → admin contract next date / status matches. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove contract + portal action, capture Network errors, fix skip/pause policies and past_due locks, re-enable portal wiring on Current, retest. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the Skip toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and subscription-portal exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever skip-portal-uptime guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
