Playbook · Shopify selling plan / subscription widget missing
Shopify selling plan not showing — subscription widget blank on the product page.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose selling plans / subscription purchase options are not showing on the product page — selling plan groups unassigned, theme app blocks missing, Recharge / Skio / Shopify Subscriptions widgets offline, or add-to-cart only posts one-time id + quantity. DIY-first: prove selling plan groups vs theme blocks vs apps vs one-time-only ATC; repair the live path; retest on the published theme. Distinct from subscription renewal email not sending, subscription app vs ops install, variant picker / swatches not updating, and app embed / theme app extension not loading. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01
Selling plan / subscription widget — not renewal email, not app-vs-ops, not variant picker, not app embed.
Several subscription products can look like “buyers cannot subscribe.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when Subscribe & Save / selling plan radios / subscription widgets never appear on the live product page — selling plan groups, theme app blocks, Recharge / Skio / Shopify Subscriptions. Renewal / upcoming-charge email silence is subscription-renewal-email-not-sending. Whether to hire a Recharge rebuild vs the Latch install is subscription-app-vs-ops-install. Variant picker / swatches not updating price / image / ATC is variant-picker-not-updating. Generic app embeds offline across the storefront is app-embed-not-loading. This page is only: selling plan / subscription widget missing on the PDP.
Six ordinary reasons the widget never lands: the product has no selling plan group (or only a draft plan), the live product JSON template lacks the purchase-options / subscription app block, Recharge / Skio / Shopify Subscriptions app embed is off on the published theme, theme JS only POSTs id + quantity without selling_plan, Markets / password / draft theme hide the published surface, or support tested renewal email / app-vs-ops / variant picker / generic app embed and called it “selling plan.” Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify and the subscription app.
02
Prove selling plan groups vs theme app blocks vs Recharge/Skio vs one-time-only ATC.
On the live storefront (not theme editor preview), open a product that should offer Subscribe & Save. Capture: Admin → Products → Selling plans / Purchase options shows an assigned group, Theme editor → product template includes the subscription / buying plan block on the live theme, the PDP shows radios or a widget in view-source / Elements, Network /cart/add can include selling_plan, and the cart line shows a subscription allocation after add. Screenshot before you change theme or apps.
Honest proof: if renewal / charge-reminder email is silent after a working subscription, leave for subscription-renewal-email-not-sending. If you are deciding Recharge rebuild vs Latch hire (not a blank widget), leave for subscription-app-vs-ops-install. If variant selection does not update price / image / ATC, leave for variant-picker-not-updating. If many app embeds fail storewide (not only the subscription block), leave for app-embed-not-loading. Do not mix those proofs with a missing selling plan UI.
03
Selling plan groups unassigned, draft, or missing on the product/variants.
Shopify will not render purchase options without a selling plan group on the product (or variant). Native Shopify Subscriptions, Recharge, Skio, Appstle, and similar apps create selling plan groups — but the group must be assigned to the SKUs buyers open. Draft plans, plans limited to a draft theme product, Markets that exclude the product, or variants never added to the group all look like “widget missing” on the PDP while Admin still shows a plan somewhere else in the catalog.
Fix path: Admin → Products → the live SKU → Selling plans / Purchase options → assign the active group to every sellable variant. Confirm the plan is not Draft-only. Retest the same market / currency buyers use. If the plan is assigned but the PDP still has no UI, skip to theme blocks — that is a different failure mode than “no plan on the product.”
04
Theme product template missing purchase-options / subscription app blocks.
Online Store 2.0 themes render selling plans through app blocks / purchase options sections on the product JSON template. A plan can be assigned in Admin while the live product.json never includes the block — or only a draft theme has it. Custom liquid that hardcodes one-time ATC and never calls product.selling_plan_groups / the app's widget will also blank the UI.
Fix path: Theme editor → live theme → Product pages → add the subscription / buying plan / purchase options app block above add-to-cart. Publish. Confirm you are not editing a draft theme. If the block appears in the editor but not on the storefront, skip to apps / embed — often the app embed is off even when the block exists. Variant picker / swatch bugs that leave ATC disabled are variant-picker-not-updating, not selling plans.
05
Recharge / Skio / Shopify Subscriptions widget offline or stripped by theme JS.
Recharge, Skio, Shopify Subscriptions, and peers need their app embed (or script) enabled on the published theme, plus a healthy product connection in the app. Embeds off, script blockers, cookie banners that never grant marketing/analytics, or theme AJAX that POSTs only { id, quantity } without selling_plan will make the widget disappear or force one-time purchases even when the UI flashes briefly.
Fix path: Theme settings → App embeds → enable the subscription app on the live theme. Reconnect the product in Recharge / Skio if the app dashboard shows it disconnected. Include selling_plan in AJAX add-to-cart when buyers pick a plan. If many unrelated embeds fail (reviews, wishlist, chat), that is app-embed-not-loading. Hiring a full Recharge rebuild vs the Latch ops install is subscription-app-vs-ops-install— not a missing widget row.
06
You tested renewal email, app-vs-ops hire, variant picker, or generic app embed instead.
Subscription renewal / upcoming-charge email not sending is subscription-renewal-email-not-sending. Recharge / Skio / Smartrr app hire vs Latch ops install is subscription-app-vs-ops-install. Variant picker / swatches not updating price image or add-to-cart is variant-picker-not-updating. App embed / theme app extension not loading storewide is app-embed-not-loading.
The only honest test for this page: on the live PDP, Subscribe & Save / selling plan UI is missing (or add-to-cart cannot send a selling plan) while Admin shows plans elsewhere — fixable with selling plan group assignment + theme purchase-options block + Recharge/Skio embed + AJAX selling_plan — not a renewal email alone, not a hire comparison alone, not a variant picker alone, not a generic app-embed outage alone. Capture Admin plan assignment + theme block + PDP + /cart/add, fix the path. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove selling plan groups vs theme blocks vs Recharge/Skio vs one-time-only ATC, assign the group, add the purchase-options block on the live theme, enable the app embed, and stop confusing renewal email / app-vs-ops / variant picker / generic app embed with a missing selling plan UI. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the selling-plan row — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a Recharge/Skio rebuild, not an earnings number.
Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or subscription-widget uptime guarantee.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered subscription attach rate, a forever selling-plan uptime guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
