Playbook · Subscription app vs ops install
Recharge, Skio, and Smartrr run subscriptions. Latch is a 72-hour ops install. Different jobs.
Written for a Shopify operator comparing a subscription app setup — selling plans, customer portal, recurring billing, skip / swap / delay — against a one-time ops install. Native tools first. Honest limits. Stay DIY if you want subscription billing. Pay $997 when the gap is wiring. No recovered-revenue promise, no ticket-cut number, no invented case studies. Distinct from WISMO app vs install (tracking widget vs wiring) and from Flow agency vs ops install.

01
What a Recharge / Skio / Smartrr setup actually is.
“We need subscriptions” almost always means an App Store subscription app. Someone installs Recharge, Skio, Smartrr, or a peer. Builds selling plans (subscribe & save, prepaid, build-a-box). Surfaces plan pickers on product pages. Turns on a customer portal for skip, swap, delay, and cancel. Connects payments so renewals charge without a new checkout. Delivers a live recurring catalog and a handoff doc.
That is a real product. Lives inside the app you install. It makes recurring billing work for the SKUs you configured. It does not install lead capture on the storefront. It does not own abandoned checkout in Klaviyo. It does not replace a silent shipping confirmation. It is subscription commerce on tools built for that job.
Public ranges other shops publish (not testimonials): subscription apps are typically monthly SaaS seats plus a percentage of subscription GMV, often with implementation or agency setup fees from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on catalog complexity. Those numbers are comps, not a Latch price list.
02
What Latch actually is.
Latch AI Ops is not a subscription app, not a Recharge / Skio / Smartrr partner seat, and not an App Store listing. It is a Shopify AI Ops Install: $997 USD one-time, 72 hours after collaborator access, on one live store. Three systems: lead capture on the store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. Wired on the stack you already pay for — Shopify notifications, Flow if you have it, Klaviyo if you have it — not selling plans as the product.
Clock starts when collaborator access is in, not at payment. Store URL collected at checkout. Access plus a delivery thread. Operator is Nico. United States offer. Not a SaaS seat, not a subscription app SOW, not a Gorgias implementation, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a support VA, not a brand or theme job.
If what you want is subscribe & save, a customer portal, and renewals that charge on schedule, this is the wrong page to buy from. Stay DIY and install one subscription app — or hire an implementation partner for that job.

Subscription billing vs ops wiring, honestly.
Same merchant pain (“we need the store to stop relying on one person babysitting admin”). Two different products.
A Recharge / Skio / Smartrr setup:
- Lives in the subscription app. Selling plans, portal, renewals, skip / swap / delay, sometimes bundling.
- Makes recurring orders and customer self-serve work. Does not stop a silent shipping email or a missing 3PL writeback from creating the customer ticket.
- Typically a monthly SaaS fee plus a cut of subscription GMV, sometimes with a setup fee. Public comps vary widely.
- Does not capture leads from DMs onto the store, or leave a checkout-ready marketing workflow live as the core deliverable.
The Latch 72-hour ops install:
- Lives in ops. Lead capture, alerts, checkout-ready workflow on tools you already pay for.
- Tries to make the exception show up before the customer is the monitoring system. It does not promise revenue recovered or tickets erased.
- $997 USD one-time. 72 hours after collaborator access. You can revoke access after handoff.
- May touch checkout and notifications where they fit. It is not sold as “N selling plans delivered.” Use a subscription app when that recurring catalog is the job.
- Does not replace Recharge, Skio, Smartrr, Klaviyo, Gorgias, or 3PL apps. Connects what is already there.
If abandoned checkout is a draft plus a native toggle you forgot, that is a different job — walk it on /abandoned-checkout-email-not-sending. Installing a subscription app to paper over silent transactional mail is still the wrong first move.

Stay DIY if you want a subscription app.
If the job in your head is “customers can subscribe & save on this SKU and manage renewals in a portal,” do that yourself this week. Open the Shopify App Store. Install one subscription app you already intend to pay for (Recharge, Skio, Smartrr, or a peer). Create one selling plan. Attach it to one product. Enable the customer portal. Place a real test subscription. Confirm the renewal and portal actions. No Latch required for that first pass.
If catalog complexity justifies a partner, hire a subscription implementation shop for a scoped setup. That is a legitimate buy. It is still a different buy from wiring lead capture and ops alerts across the stack you already pay for.
Keep one owner per checkout story. Do not add a second “subscription recovery” flow while native order confirmation is off. The DIY abandoned-checkout and confirmation versions are /abandoned-checkout and /order-confirmation-email-not-sending.
05
When the subscription app is the wrong buy.
A selling plan cannot fix a wiring gap. You will still pay for recurring seats that paper over the same loop if:
- Shipping confirmation still says “we’ll send tracking soon,” or the native email is off.
- Fulfillment lives in a 3PL that does not write tracking back to the Shopify order.
- Abandoned checkout is a Klaviyo draft plus a native toggle you forgot.
- Leads die in Instagram DMs because nothing captures them on the store.
- Ops alerts for aging unfulfilled orders never land in a channel you check — that is Flow / notifications work, not a subscription SOW.
Those are ops jobs. That is when $997 is the honest buy: connect the stack, stand up alerts in a channel you already check, leave a checkout-ready workflow live at hour 72. Not a cheaper subscription app. Not an earnings guarantee.
07
What not to do.
- Do not install Recharge / Skio / Smartrr to fix a shipping email that never fires. Renewals will still land on blank tracking stories.
- Do not stack a subscription portal, a Klaviyo “on the way” email, and a Gorgias WISMO macro as three tracking stories. Pick a source of truth.
- Do not treat Latch as a cheaper subscription app. It is not sold as selling plans or a customer portal. It will not replace a scoped subscription SOW.
- Do not buy a second subscription app before you confirm the first portal, one selling plan, and one real test renewal.
- Do not claim recovered revenue or fewer tickets because you installed either product. This page will not either.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you want a subscription app. One selling plan on one SKU, portal on, real test renewal this week. That is the subscription job. No Latch required for a first pass. Hire a subscription implementation shop when that scoped setup is what you actually need.
Pay for help when the gap is wiring — lead capture not dying in DMs, ops alerts in a channel you already check, a checkout-ready workflow instead of a draft in Klaviyo plus a native toggle you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a subscription app SOW, not a Gorgias implementation, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a support VA, not a brand or theme job.
Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: subscription apps are typically monthly SaaS plus a share of subscription GMV, sometimes with setup fees from a few hundred to a few thousand. A Shopify Flow or app automation install typically runs $500–$2,500. A Klaviyo-only flow rebuild typically runs $2,000–$5,000. Dedicated Gorgias implementation shops commonly start around $3,750. A support VA is $500–$800 a month. $997 is a one-time 72-hour install of three systems on the stack you already pay for — not a monthly seat, not a recovered-revenue number, not a ticket-volume cut.
What it does not buy: selling plans or a customer portal as the deliverable, recovered checkout revenue, a lift in conversion, fewer tickets as a guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
