Playbook · Shopify pre-order / continue selling / deposit not working at checkout

Pre-order / continue selling / deposit looks fine on the PDP — then checkout breaks it.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose pre-order, continue selling when out of stock, or deposit / partial-payment apps fail at checkout — cart accepts the OOS or preorder line, but checkout blocks the order, charges full price instead of deposit, drops the selling plan, or never tags the order as preorder — or you chased back-in-stock notify, variant inventory policy alone, Shop Pay Installments, or payment customization instead. DIY-first: prove CONTINUE policy → selling plan / deposit app assignment → checkout path → Markets → retest. Distinct from back-in-stock not notifying, variant inventory policy wrong, Shop Pay Installments missing, and payment customization not hiding. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

Pre-order / continue selling / deposit failing at checkout — not back-in-stock notify, variant policy alone, Shop Pay Installments, or payment customization.

Several inventory / payment products can look like “preorder is broken.” They do not share a fix. This page is only when a pre-order, continue selling when out of stock, or deposit / partial-payment path fails at checkout after the line is already in cart. Back-in-stock / sold-out notify never firing after inventory returns is shopify-back-in-stock-not-notifying. Variant inventory policy deny vs continue selling (oversell / block) alone is shopify-variant-inventory-policy-wrong. Shop Pay Installments / Affirm-style installment option missing is shopify-shop-pay-installments-missing. Payment Customization Function hiding or reordering gateways is shopify-payment-customization-not-hiding.

Soft links when the bug is adjacent: Preorder / continue-selling UI never mounts on the PDP is shopify-preorder-button-not-showing. Subscription / selling-plan widget missing on PDP is shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. This playbook stays on preorder / continue-selling / deposit accepted on storefront → broken or wrong at checkout.

02

Prove inventory policy, selling plan or deposit app, and checkout path.

Open the exact variant. Confirm inventory policy is CONTINUE when you intend continue-selling / preorder on zero available. Confirm Online Store availability and that the selling location buyers use is not DENY-only.

Confirm the preorder selling plan group or deposit app is assigned to that product/variant, the purchase option is selected in cart (not one-time full price), and cart JSON shows selling_plan_allocation or the deposit app’s line properties.

Run an incognito test checkout. Capture whether the line labels as Pre-order / Deposit, whether payment asks for deposit vs full amount, and the exact checkout error / declined reason. Screenshot Admin → Orders after a successful control purchase of an in-stock SKU so you know checkout itself works.

03

Repair policy, selling plan, deposit app, Markets — then retest.

Align CONTINUE on the Online Store selling location. Re-attach selling plan / deposit app blocks if the PDP CTA shows but checkout drops the plan. Fix Markets / presentment mismatches that force full capture or hide purchase options for the buyer’s country.

Clear conflicting cart attributes, draft themes, and payment apps that force full capture on deposit lines. Disable one third-party payment / fraud app at a time if checkout rejects only preorder lines. Retest cart → checkout → paid order with the expected preorder tag, metafield, or deposit balance.

Soft notes: if the Preorder UI never mounts on the PDP, use shopify-preorder-button-not-showing. If selling-plan widgets are missing, use shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. Variant continue-selling / deny alone is shopify-variant-inventory-policy-wrong.

04

You tested back-in-stock notify, variant policy, Installments, or payment customization instead.

Back-in-stock / sold-out notify not notifying is shopify-back-in-stock-not-notifying. Variant inventory policy deny/continue wrong is shopify-variant-inventory-policy-wrong. Shop Pay Installments missing is shopify-shop-pay-installments-missing. Payment customization not hiding is shopify-payment-customization-not-hiding.

The only honest test for this page: OOS or preorder variant with CONTINUE (or deposit selling plan) → cart shows purchase option → checkout completes with deposit/preorder semantics (or the app’s error log shows why not). Anything else is a different product.

05

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove CONTINUE, prove selling plan / deposit assignment, capture the checkout failure, fix Markets / payment conflicts, retest. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: preorder button, selling plan, variant inventory policy, back-in-stock notify, Shop Pay Installments.

Pay for help when the work is not the CONTINUE toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever preorder-uptime guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
