Playbook · Shopify preorder / continue selling button missing

Shopify preorder button not showing — continue selling / preorder UI blank on the product page.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose preorder / continue selling when out of stock / selling plan preorder UI is not showing on the product page — inventory policy still DENY, theme app blocks missing, PreOrder Hero / similar widgets offline, or the theme hardcodes Sold out when available is zero. DIY-first: prove inventory policy vs theme blocks vs apps vs sold-out ATC; repair the live path; retest on the published theme. Distinct from selling plan / subscription widget not showing, multi-location inventory wrong / oversell symptoms, sold-out soft 404 / unavailable product SEO, and back-in-stock email not sending. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Preorder button — not selling-plan subscription widget, not inventory oversell, not continue-selling alone, not back-in-stock.

Several out-of-stock products can look like “buyers cannot preorder.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when Pre-order / Coming soon / Continue selling purchase UI never appears on the live product page — inventory policy CONTINUE, theme preorder blocks, PreOrder Hero / similar apps, selling plan preorder UI on the PDP. Subscription Subscribe & Save widgets blank (while stock is fine) is shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. Wrong multi-location numbers / oversell between POS and online is multi-location-inventory-wrong. Sold-out / unavailable SEO soft 404 is shopify-soft-404-sold-out. Notify-me / back-in-stock email silence is back-in-stock-email-not-sending. Preorder shipped / ready email silence after a working preorder is preorder-shipped-email-not-sending. This page is only: preorder / continue-selling button missing on the PDP.

Six ordinary reasons the button never lands: variants still use inventory policy DENY (Continue selling off), no preorder selling plan assigned when you sell via selling plans, the live product JSON template lacks the preorder / purchase-options app block or hardcodes Sold out when available <= 0, PreOrder Hero / peer app embed is off on the published theme, Markets / password / draft theme hide the published surface, or support tested selling-plan subscription widget / inventory oversell / continue-selling settings alone / back-in-stock email and called it “preorder button.” Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify and the preorder app.

02

Prove inventory policy CONTINUE vs theme app blocks vs PreOrder Hero vs sold-out ATC.

On the live storefront (not theme editor preview), open a product that should offer Pre-order / Coming soon while quantity is zero. Capture: Admin → Products → Inventory shows Continue selling when out of stock (or a preorder selling plan on Purchase options), Theme editor → product template includes the preorder / purchase-options block on the live theme, the PDP shows Pre-order / Coming soon (not Sold out) in view-source / Elements, Network /cart/add can succeed for that variant, and cart accepts the line. Screenshot before you change theme or apps.

Honest proof: if Subscribe & Save radios are missing on an in-stock subscription SKU, leave for shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. If location columns disagree / POS oversells online stock, leave for multi-location-inventory-wrong. If Google soft-404s sold-out URLs, leave for shopify-soft-404-sold-out. If Notify me email never fires after restock, leave for back-in-stock-email-not-sending. Do not mix those proofs with a missing preorder button.

03

Inventory policy DENY / Continue selling off / preorder selling plan unassigned.

Shopify will not sell (or show a sellable preorder CTA) when the variant inventory policy is DENY and available is zero. Continue selling when out of stock sets policy to CONTINUE. Preorder apps and selling plan preorder UIs often still require that policy — or an assigned preorder selling plan group — on every sellable variant. Policy on only one size, Markets that exclude the SKU, or Inventory not tracked with a theme that still forces Sold out all look like “button missing” while Admin looks fine elsewhere.

Fix path: Admin → Products → the live SKU → Inventory → enable Continue selling when out of stock on every variant you want to preorder, or assign the active preorder selling plan group under Purchase options. Confirm you are not editing a draft product / wrong location. Retest the same market buyers use. If policy is CONTINUE but the PDP still says Sold out, skip to theme blocks — that is a different failure mode than “policy DENY.”

04

Theme product template missing preorder / purchase-options app blocks or hardcoding Sold out.

Online Store 2.0 themes render preorder / selling plan UI through app blocks on the product JSON template. Policy can be CONTINUE while the live product.json never includes the preorder block — or only a draft theme has it. Custom liquid that checks variant.available alone (or inventory_quantity <= 0) and never reads inventory_policy == 'continue' / the app's preorder widget will hardcode Sold out and hide add-to-cart.

Fix path: Theme editor → live theme → Product pages → add the preorder / buying plan / purchase options app block above add-to-cart. Publish. Confirm you are not editing a draft theme. Replace Sold out branches that ignore CONTINUE. If the block appears in the editor but not on the storefront, skip to apps / embed. Soft-404 / noindex on sold-out templates is shopify-soft-404-sold-out, not a missing preorder button.

05

PreOrder Hero / similar preorder widgets offline or stripped by theme JS.

PreOrder Hero, Prest beluga-style preorder apps, Shopify selling plan preorder UIs, and peers need their app embed (or script) enabled on the published theme, plus a healthy product connection in the app. Embeds off, script blockers, cookie banners that never grant marketing/analytics, or theme AJAX that only posts when available is true will blank the preorder CTA even when Admin inventory policy is CONTINUE.

Fix path: Theme settings → App embeds → enable the preorder app on the live theme. Reconnect the product in PreOrder Hero (or peer) if the dashboard shows it disconnected. Confirm the app's preorder rules match the OOS SKUs. If many unrelated embeds fail (reviews, wishlist, chat), that is app-embed-not-loading. Subscription selling plan widgets on in-stock SKUs are shopify-selling-plan-not-showing— not this preorder button row.

06

You tested selling-plan subscription widget, inventory oversell, continue-selling settings, or back-in-stock instead.

Selling plan / subscription widget not showing on an in-stock PDP is shopify-selling-plan-not-showing. Multi-location inventory wrong / oversell between locations is multi-location-inventory-wrong. Sold-out soft 404 / unavailable product SEO is shopify-soft-404-sold-out. Back-in-stock / Notify me email not sending is back-in-stock-email-not-sending. Preorder shipped email not sending after a working preorder is preorder-shipped-email-not-sending.

The only honest test for this page: on the live OOS / preorder PDP, Pre-order / Coming soon / continue-selling UI is missing (or ATC stays Sold out) while Admin policy or preorder plan should allow sale — fixable with CONTINUE / preorder plan assignment + theme preorder block + PreOrder Hero embed + liquid that respects inventory_policy — not a subscription selling-plan widget alone, not a multi-location oversell alone, not toggling Continue selling without fixing the theme, not a back-in-stock email alone. Capture Admin inventory + theme block + PDP + /cart/add, fix the path. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove inventory policy vs theme blocks vs PreOrder Hero vs sold-out ATC, set CONTINUE / assign the preorder plan, add the preorder block on the live theme, enable the app embed, and stop confusing selling-plan subscription widgets / inventory oversell / continue-selling toggles alone / back-in-stock email with a missing preorder button. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the preorder-button row — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a PreOrder Hero rebuild, not an earnings number.

Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or preorder-button uptime guarantee.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered preorder attach rate, a forever preorder-button uptime guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
