Playbook · Shopify locale switcher broken

Shopify locale switcher broken — language dropdown stuck, wrong locales, or will not post.

Written for a Shopify owner or ops lead whose Markets locale / language switcher UI is broken — dropdown stuck, wrong language list, label mismatch, or form never posts — usually an unpublished Market language, disabled localization form section, broken theme language selector, or a third-party language-switcher app fighting the native form. DIY-first: prove Markets languages published, prove the theme form posts, prove the switcher opens, then switch once in a private window. Distinct from Translation API missing locale, hreflang wrong, checkout language wrong, and multi-currency selector wrong. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

Locale switcher broken — not Translation API, not hreflang, not checkout language, not multi-currency selector.

Several Markets / locale bugs look alike. They do not share a fix. This page is only when the language / locale switcher control itself is broken — will not open, lists the wrong languages, label mismatch, or never posts a new locale. Missing translated strings after a switch that did post is shopify-translation-api-missing-locale.

Soft-check shopify-hreflang-wrong when alternate links / Google locale is the gap, shopify-checkout-language-wrong when checkout language is stuck, shopify-multi-currency-selector-wrong when the country/currency control is the broken UI, and shopify-translate-missing-strings when Translate & Adapt English fallbacks remain — this page stays on the broken language switcher UI.

02

Prove Markets languages published vs theme localization form vs language-selector app.

In incognito on the live primary domain, open the header language / locale switcher. Does the disclosure stay closed? Are languages missing from the list? Soft-check Settings → Markets → Languages: each locale published with the correct domain/subfolder. Soft-check Theme → Header / localization form / language selector section enabled and published. Soft-check theme editor: the form posts locale / language (not a dead onclick). Soft-check third-party language-switcher apps replacing the native form. Soft-check App embeds and custom CSS that hide .localization / .language-selector / disclosure. Soft-check localization cookies blocking a new language selection.

Capture: screenshot of the stuck/wrong language switcher, Markets language publish list, theme section list, App embeds toggles, primary domain, and any language-switcher app toggles.

03

Repair language selector / Markets locales / form; retest switch once.

Publish missing Market languages and confirm primary plus additional locales on Current. Restore the theme localization form / language selector section and Publish. Disable conflicting language-switcher apps or CSS one at a time. Clear localization cookies and hard-refresh on desktop and phone.

Honest retest: switcher opens; correct languages listed; choosing one posts a new locale so URL or storefront language updates without a stuck control. Soft-link shopify-translation-api-missing-locale when the switcher works but product/theme strings stay English. Soft-link shopify-hreflang-wrong when alternate links are the leftover gap. Soft-link shopify-checkout-language-wrong when checkout language stays wrong after the storefront switch.

You tested Translation API strings, hreflang, checkout language, or multi-currency selector instead.

Missing Translation API / Markets locale strings is shopify-translation-api-missing-locale. Hreflang / alternate locale links wrong is shopify-hreflang-wrong. Checkout language stuck wrong is shopify-checkout-language-wrong. Country/currency selector stuck or wrong options is shopify-multi-currency-selector-wrong. Translate & Adapt English fallbacks without a broken switcher is shopify-translate-missing-strings. Geo IP country redirect looping is shopify-geo-ip-redirect-loop.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when the locale switcher bug is an unpublished Market language, a theme localization form toggle, or one CSS / app conflict you can reverse in an afternoon. Pay when the gap is wiring — lead capture, ops alerts, and a checkout-ready workflow on the stack you already pay for, so Markets / locale switcher / storefront exceptions land in a channel you already check. Clock starts when collaborator access is in. 72 hours. One live store. Written by Nico. No earnings claims. No conversion-lift guarantee. Not a Translate & Adapt retainer.
