Playbook · Hreflang alternate links / wrong locale in Google

Shopify Markets hreflang alternate links wrong or missing so Google shows the wrong locale.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Google Search / Search Console shows the wrong locale or country URL because hreflang / rel=alternate link tags are missing, one-way, conflicting, or point at 404s — reciprocal return tags broken, x-default pointing at the wrong host, GSC International Targeting / hreflang errors, HTML head vs sitemap vs HTTP Link header disagreeing, theme or SEO app overriding Markets tags — or you chased geo IP redirects, Translation API strings, currency converter, checkout language, or canonical URL instead. DIY-first: prove the alternate cluster → fix Markets / theme / SEO-app hreflang → retest reciprocal tags. Distinct from geo IP / Markets redirect loop, Translation API missing locale, currency converter wrong, checkout language wrong, and canonical URL wrong. Soft-link shopify-hreflang-markets-wrong when the bug is Markets language assignment / Translate & Adapt SEO setup rather than Google serving the wrong locale from broken alternate links. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Hreflang alternate links wrong so Google shows wrong locale — not geo IP, Translation API, currency, checkout language, or canonical.

Several “Markets / locale / SEO” products can look like “Google sent them to the wrong country site.” They do not share a fix. This page is only when hreflang / rel=alternate link tags are wrong or missing so Google Search shows the wrong locale or country URL. Live shoppers looping between country domains or landing on the wrong market via geo IP is shopify-geo-ip-redirect-loop. Product / theme / checkout strings missing a locale via Translation API is shopify-translation-api-missing-locale. Storefront currency / presentment wrong is shopify-currency-converter-wrong. Checkout UI stuck in the wrong language is shopify-checkout-language-wrong. Self-referencing / duplicate canonical URL is shopify-canonical-url-wrong.

Soft links when the bug is adjacent: Markets language assignment / Translate & Adapt / Markets SEO alternate URL setup is shopify-hreflang-markets-wrong. Robots / noindex blocking crawl is shopify-robots-txt-blocking-indexing. Sitemap missing products is shopify-sitemap-xml-missing-products. This playbook stays on alternate link cluster → Google shows wrong locale in SERPs / GSC.

02

Prove view-source rel=alternate, reciprocal returns, x-default, and GSC hreflang errors.

Open each market homepage and a sample product in a private window. View-source and collect every <link rel="alternate" hreflang="…" href="…"> in the head. Hit each href — note 200 vs 301 vs 404. Confirm every peer page returns the reverse hreflang for this URL (reciprocal return tags). Confirm one x-default and that it matches your primary market intent.

Soft-check Search Console: International Targeting / Page indexing reports for “no return tags,” “invalid language code,” or conflicting annotations. Soft-check Response headers for Link: <…>; rel="alternate"; hreflang= that disagree with HTML head or the sitemap. Soft-check: if shoppers are redirected live between markets but SERPs look fine, leave this page and use shopify-geo-ip-redirect-loop. If storefront copy is English while tags look correct, use shopify-translation-api-missing-locale. If prices / FX are wrong, use shopify-currency-converter-wrong. If only checkout UI language is wrong, use shopify-checkout-language-wrong. If only the canonical self-URL is wrong, use shopify-canonical-url-wrong.

03

Repair Markets domains, theme head, SEO-app overrides; retest reciprocal tags.

Publish every market language on its domain or subfolder. Assign languages to the correct Markets. Remove theme Liquid or SEO-app hardcoded incomplete hreflang blocks that fight Shopify Markets auto tags. Fix one-way peers and 404 targets. Pick one source of truth — HTML head, HTTP Link header, or sitemap — and stop publishing conflicting clusters. Align x-default with your primary market.

Retest: view-source on each market → reciprocal returns present → peers 200 → x-default consistent → GSC hreflang errors clearing after recrawl. Soft notes: Markets language assignment / Translate & Adapt offline belongs on shopify-hreflang-markets-wrong. Geo IP redirect loops belong on shopify-geo-ip-redirect-loop. Translation API missing locale belongs on shopify-translation-api-missing-locale. Currency converter belongs on shopify-currency-converter-wrong. Checkout language belongs on shopify-checkout-language-wrong. Canonical URL belongs on shopify-canonical-url-wrong.

04

You tested geo IP redirect, Translation API, currency converter, checkout language, or canonical instead.

Geo IP / Markets redirect loop is shopify-geo-ip-redirect-loop. Translation API missing locale is shopify-translation-api-missing-locale. Currency converter wrong is shopify-currency-converter-wrong. Checkout language wrong is shopify-checkout-language-wrong. Canonical URL wrong is shopify-canonical-url-wrong. Markets hreflang / Translate & Adapt SEO setup is shopify-hreflang-markets-wrong.

The only honest test for this page: view-source alternate cluster → reciprocal returns → Google / GSC associating the wrong locale URL with the query → after fix, peers return each other and GSC hreflang errors clear. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove the alternate cluster, fix one-way / 404 peers, remove a fighting SEO-app hreflang block, retest reciprocal tags. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: Markets hreflang / Translate & Adapt, geo IP redirect loop, Translation API, currency converter, checkout language, canonical URL.

Pay for help when the work is not the hreflang tags themselves — it is connecting the stack you already have so Markets / hreflang / indexing exception alerts land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not an SEO retainer, not a ranking guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or ranking-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more organic traffic, recovered rankings, a forever hreflang architecture retainer, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
