Playbook · Gift card metafield missing
Shopify gift card metafield missing? Prove the shop owner, scopes, and session read.
Written for a Shopify owner whose app or Admin API expects a gift card metafield that is missing entirely—no definition, wrong owner, or never created on GiftCard. Start with definition existence and GiftCard GID—not with balance or purchase troubleshooting. This is distinct from gift card metafield blank, gift card form blank, gift card balance wrong, and gift card purchase failing.

Buy the 72-hour install — $997Blank (has definition)Merchant FAQ
01
Missing is not the same bug as blank.
Use this page when Custom data has no GiftCard definition for the expected namespace.key, GraphQL returns null for the metafield node, or the app never received a definition ID. If the definition exists and Admin shows an empty value, use gift card metafield blank instead.
Capture gift card GID (not just code), app name, expected namespace.key, and whether Settings → Custom data → Gift cards lists that definition before creating anything new.
02
Prove the GiftCard owner vs gift card product, order, or customer.
A metafield on the gift card product or on the order that purchased it will not appear on the GiftCard object apps redeem against. Record the GiftCard GID from Admin → Products → Gift cards (or GraphQL giftCards query).
Copy the exact namespace.key the app documents. Do not invent a Product-owner definition because the label says “gift card.”
03
Check whether the GiftCard metafield definition exists and who can write it.
In Admin Custom data, filter owner type Gift card. If the definition is absent, create it with the documented type—or confirm the app is supposed to create an app-owned definition on install. If the definition is app-owned and locked, the merchant cannot recreate it; reinstall or ask the app to migrate. Distinct from metafield definition locked when the issue is a different owner.
Keep gift card codes, PINs, and customer emails out of screenshots. Treat “definition missing,” “definition on wrong owner,” and “definition present but value never written” as separate classifications.
04
Inspect Admin API or app read path separately from balance UI.
Query GiftCard.metafield(namespace, key) or metafields(first:) for the known GID. Separate: app queries Product, app uses Storefront API (gift card metafields are typically Admin-only), scopes missing read_gift_cards / metafields, or app caches a pre-definition null.
Balance and redeem UI bugs belong on gift card balance wrong and gift card balance check broken—not here.
05
Retest one gift card and preserve the proof.
Use one GiftCard GID, one namespace.key, and one app or Admin GraphQL client. Record whether the definition existed before the test, type, access, any reversible test value written after creation, GraphQL response, and app log snippet with secrets redacted.
Classify the miss as missing definition, wrong owner, scopes, app cache, or blank-value (then switch playbooks). Keep it separate from purchase delivery, form blank, and Multipass.
06
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when creating the GiftCard definition or fixing the owner/query explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so future app installs are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops can connect the agreed workflow in a 72-hour window after collaborator access. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
