Playbook · gift card metafield blank
Shopify gift card metafield blank — object, namespace.key, access, API and app read path.
A gift card metafield can be defined and still look blank because the code is reading the wrong owner, key, card, scope, or consumer. Start with one known gift card and prove the gift card object, exact namespace.key, type, access, and returned value. This is not the gift card form blank problem and not gift card balance wrong. DIY first. No earnings claims.

01
Start with the gift card object, not the product or balance.
A Shopify gift card product is the thing a buyer purchases. A gift card is the issued instrument with its own code, balance, status, recipient, and lifecycle. A product, order, customer, or transaction metafield can be populated while a gift card metafield is empty. Write down the failing surface: admin detail, Admin GraphQL response, app dashboard, notification workflow, or an internal export.
Use one test card that you can identify without exposing its code. Record its gift card ID, status, and the field’s intended owner. Do not copy a value into a product metafield just to make a storefront template render; that changes the data model rather than proving the gift card field works.
02
Prove the definition, namespace.key, type, access, and value.
Open Settings → Custom data and confirm the definition is attached to gift cards, not products or customers. Copy the exact namespace and key, type, description, and access configuration. Then inspect the same known gift card and verify a non-empty value is actually saved there. A value in an app database, CSV, or gift card product is not proof of a Shopify gift card metafield value.
Check type handling next. References, lists, JSON, numbers, files, and rich text need the matching accessor and serialization. If the definition is app-owned or locked, document the owner and use the supported write path instead of creating a second look-alike definition.
03
Match the authorized read path to the same object and card.
For an Admin API read, query the gift card object and request the metafield by the exact namespace and key. Verify the API version, token scopes, shop, gift card ID, and raw response. A successful product query or balance lookup does not prove that the gift card metafield query is authorized or correctly shaped. For an app, inspect the actual request and response before trusting a dashboard label; stale cache and a wrong shop are common.
Retest with a deliberately recognizable non-sensitive value on one card, then restore the intended value. If Admin returns the value but the app is blank, the fault is the app’s query, scope, cache, or object mapping. If Admin is blank, stay in the definition/value proof instead.
04
Do not mix three different gift card failures.
A blank custom metafield is a data-definition or read-path issue. A blank redeem or purchase form is a storefront UI, theme, app block, or customer-account issue. A wrong balance is a ledger, redemption, currency, status, or display issue. They can appear on the same page but require different evidence. This page is specifically about a custom field on the gift card object being missing or empty; use the linked form and balance playbooks for those other symptoms.

Retest live, then decide DIY vs pay $997.
Close out with one recorded test: exact gift card ID, exact namespace.key, type, non-empty value, access setting, raw API or app response, and the live consumer showing the value. Clear caches only after those identifiers match. Remove any temporary test value and avoid exposing gift card codes or customer data in logs.
Stay DIY if the checklist resolves the blank. Pay when the work is wiring the Shopify operations stack you already use: $997 USD one-time for the Latch AI Ops install, 72 hours after collaborator access, with no earnings guarantee. Nico does not take owner passwords.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a guaranteed metafield result, or a case study. You are buying the install.
