Playbook · Shopify gift card balance check / customer lookup broken
Shopify gift card balance check page or customer gift card lookup not working.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose gift card balance check page or customer gift card lookup is broken — theme page / section missing or JS-broken, classic vs new customer accounts gift cards list blank, third-party gift-card app embed off, wrong code/PIN format, disabled or expired cards. DIY-first: prove theme vs customer accounts vs app; repair the live path; retest with a known-good card. Distinct from gift card notification email not sending, new customer accounts login broken, and customer password reset email not sending. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01
Gift card balance check / customer lookup — not gift card email, not new accounts login, not password reset.
Several gift-card and account products can look like “customers cannot use our gift cards.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when the storefront balance check page or the customer accounts gift cards list / lookup fails (theme, customer accounts, app). Native gift card notification email not sending is gift-card-email-not-sending. New customer accounts login broken / redirect loop is new-customer-accounts-login-broken. Customer password reset email silence is customer-password-reset-email-not-sending. This page is only: balance check page / customer gift card lookup not working.
Six ordinary reasons balance check fails: the theme never published a gift-card balance page (or the page 404s), the Liquid / section form JS throws and the submit button does nothing, classic vs new customer accounts hide the gift cards list, a third-party gift-card app embed is off on the live theme, customers paste codes with spaces/hyphens/PIN missing, or the card is disabled / expired / already spent while support tests the wrong path. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify.
02
Prove theme balance page vs customer accounts gift cards list vs third-party app.
On the live storefront (not theme editor preview), open the advertised balance-check URL — often a page like /pages/gift-card-balance, a theme template, or an app proxy path. Capture: HTTP status (200 vs 404), whether a code input form renders, browser console errors on submit, and the exact error string shown to the customer. Then log into a customer account that owns a known-good gift card and open the gift cards / wallet view.
Honest proof: if the only problem is that the Gift card created notification never lands in email, leave for gift-card-email-not-sending. If customers cannot log in at all (redirect loop / identity provider), leave for new-customer-accounts-login-broken. If Forgot password email never arrives, leave for customer-password-reset-email-not-sending. Do not mix those proofs with a broken balance-check page or blank gift cards list.
03
Theme gift card balance page / section / Liquid form broken or missing.
Shopify themes do not always ship a customer-facing gift card balance checker out of the box. Many stores add a page + section, a custom Liquid form posting to the gift card balance endpoint, or rely on an app block. If Navigation still links to a deleted page handle, customers get a 404 and support hears “balance check is broken.” If the section is on a draft theme only, the live store never shows the form. If theme JS conflicts with a consent banner or another app, the submit handler never fires.
Fix path: confirm Online Store → Pages (or the theme template) for a published balance-check page, open Theme editor on the live theme, verify the section / app block is present, fix or remove broken custom JS, and update Navigation to the real URL. Retest with a known-good card code in an incognito window. App embed not loading is a related but different product — app-embed-not-loading.
04
Customer accounts gift cards list blank (classic vs new accounts).
Classic customer accounts often expose gift cards on /account when a card is assigned to that customer. New customer accounts use a hosted identity experience and different UI surfaces — theme Account links that still point at classic /account/login can strand buyers where gift cards never appear. A card that was never assigned to the customer (issued to an email only, or to a different customer record) will not show in that login.
Fix path: Settings → Customer accounts — know whether you are on classic or new. Confirm the customer record actually owns the gift card in Admin → Customers / Gift cards. Test after a clean login. If login itself is broken, stop and use new-customer-accounts-login-broken first — a blank gift cards list after a successful login is this page; a redirect loop before login is that page.
05
Third-party gift-card app balance checker / app embed offline.
If gift cards run through a third-party app (store credit / gift-card SaaS), the balance checker is usually an app block or app embed — not native Shopify gift cards. Embed toggled off on the live theme, app subscription paused, or a theme update that dropped the block will blank the checker while Admin still shows cards. Code format rules (spaces, PIN, last-4) differ by app; pasting a native Shopify 16-digit code into an app form (or the reverse) returns “invalid” even when the card is fine.
Fix path: Theme settings → App embeds — turn the gift-card app on for the live theme. Confirm the balance page uses that app’s block. Check app billing / status. Test with a code issued by that system, not a random string from a different tool. Disabled / expired / fully redeemed cards will correctly return zero or error — that is not a broken page.
06
You tested gift card email, new accounts login, or password reset instead.
Gift card notification email not sending is gift-card-email-not-sending. New customer accounts login broken / redirect loop is new-customer-accounts-login-broken. Customer password reset email not sending is customer-password-reset-email-not-sending.
The only honest test for this page: a customer (or you in incognito) cannot see remaining balance on the storefront balance page and/or in customer accounts gift card lookup — fixable with a published theme page/section, correct classic vs new accounts gift cards surface, live app embed, and known-good code/PIN — not Gift card created email silence alone, not a login redirect loop alone, not Forgot password email silence alone. Capture the live URL status + console + Admin gift card state, fix the path. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove theme balance page vs customer accounts gift cards list vs third-party app, publish/repair the live form, fix classic vs new accounts display, re-enable the embed, and stop confusing gift card email / login loops / password reset with balance lookup. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the gift card balance-check row — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a gift-card app rebuild, not an earnings number.
Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or gift-card-balance guarantee.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered gift card liability, a forever balance-check uptime guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
