Playbook · Theme / design agency vs ops install

A Shopify theme agency ships brand and storefront. Latch is a 72-hour ops install. They are not the same buy.

Written for a Shopify operator comparing a theme or design agency quote — homepage, PDP, brand system, theme customization — against a one-time ops install. Native tools first. Honest limits. Stay DIY if you want brand or theme work. Pay $997 when the gap is wiring. No recovered-revenue promise, no conversion-lift number, no invented case studies. Distinct from the Flow agency vs ops playbook (automation graphs vs wiring) and from Gorgias vs ops install (helpdesk vs wiring).

01

What a Shopify theme / design agency engagement actually is.

“Hire someone for the store” almost always means brand and storefront work. Someone audits the theme. Ships a new homepage and collection layout. Customizes PDP sections, fonts, and mobile nav. Sometimes rebuilds from Dawn or a paid theme. Delivers Figma plus a live theme preview and a handoff doc.

That is a real product. Lives in the Online Store theme editor, Liquid, and design systems. It makes the shop look and feel like the brand you want. It does not install lead capture on the storefront as an ops system. It does not own abandoned checkout in Klaviyo. It does not replace a silent shipping confirmation. It is a better face for the store you already run.

Public ranges other shops publish (not testimonials): Shopify theme customizations and small redesigns commonly run a few thousand dollars; full brand + theme rebuilds often land $5,000–$25,000+. Those numbers are comps, not a Latch price list.

02

What Latch actually is.

Latch AI Ops is not a theme agency retainer, not a brand studio, and not an App Store listing. It is a Shopify AI Ops Install: $997 USD one-time, 72 hours after collaborator access, on one live store. Three systems: lead capture on the store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. Wired on the stack you already pay for — Shopify notifications, Flow if you have it, Klaviyo if you have it — not a catalog of theme sections as the product.

Clock starts when collaborator access is in, not at payment. Store URL collected at checkout. Access plus a delivery thread. Operator is Nico. United States offer. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme SOW, not a Gorgias implementation, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a support VA, not a brand or design job.

If what you want is a redesign, a new homepage, or a theme handoff doc, this is the wrong page to buy from. Stay DIY in the theme editor — or hire a theme / design shop for that job.

Brand / theme vs ops wiring, honestly.

Same merchant pain (“the store feels broken”). Two different products.

A Shopify theme / design agency engagement:

  • Lives in brand and storefront. Theme, layouts, typography, PDP, collection pages, sometimes photography direction.
  • Makes the shop look intentional. Does not stop a silent shipping email or a missing 3PL writeback from creating the customer ticket.
  • Typically a scoped project fee. Public comps often land thousands to tens of thousands depending on scope.
  • Does not capture leads from DMs onto the store, or leave a checkout-ready marketing workflow live as the core deliverable.

The Latch 72-hour ops install:

  • Lives in ops. Lead capture, alerts, checkout-ready workflow on tools you already pay for.
  • Tries to make the exception show up before the customer is the monitoring system. It does not promise revenue recovered or tickets erased.
  • $997 USD one-time. 72 hours after collaborator access. You can revoke access after handoff.
  • May touch theme files only if a form or snippet must land. It is not sold as “N pages redesigned.” Use a theme agency when brand/storefront is the job.
  • Does not replace themes, Klaviyo, Gorgias, or 3PL apps. Connects what is already there.

If leads die in Instagram or TikTok DMs with no capture path, that is an ops job — walk the DIY on /instagram-dm-leads. Hiring a theme shop to restyle the homepage will not invent that capture path.

04

Stay DIY if you want brand or theme work.

If the job in your head is “new homepage, cleaner PDP, brand fonts,” do that yourself this week or hire for that. Open Online Store → Themes → Customize. Swap sections, colors, and typography on a duplicate theme. Preview on mobile. Publish when it looks right. That is free-to-start theme work. No ops install required for a first pass.

If volume justifies a partner, hire a Shopify theme / design shop for a scoped redesign. That is a legitimate buy. It is still a different buy from wiring lead capture and ops alerts across the stack you already pay for.

Keep one owner per job. Do not buy a redesign hoping it will fix silent shipping mail or unfulfilled orders with no Slack ping. The DIY versions of those ops bugs live on /shipping-confirmation-email-not-sending and /unfulfilled-order-alert.

05

When the theme agency is the wrong buy.

A prettier storefront cannot fix a wiring gap. You will still pay for design that papers over the same loop if:

  • Shipping confirmation still says “we’ll send tracking soon,” or the native email is off.
  • Fulfillment lives in a 3PL that does not write tracking back to the Shopify order.
  • Abandoned checkout is a Klaviyo draft plus a native toggle you forgot.
  • Leads die in Instagram DMs because nothing captures them on the store.
  • Ops alerts never land in a channel you check — that is wiring, not a new hero section.

Those are ops jobs. That is when $997 is the honest buy: connect the stack, stand up alerts in a channel you already check, leave a checkout-ready workflow live at hour 72. Not a cheaper theme agency. Not an earnings guarantee.

07

What not to do.

  • Do not hire a theme agency to fix a shipping email that never fires. The new homepage will still sit on blank orders.
  • Do not stack a redesign, a Flow Slack ping, and a Gorgias WISMO macro as three “fix the store” stories. Pick a source of truth per job.
  • Do not treat Latch as a cheaper theme agency. It is not sold as N redesigned pages. It will not replace a scoped brand / theme SOW.
  • Do not buy a redesign before you check whether ops alerts, shipping mail, and checkout follow-up already work on the live theme.
  • Do not claim recovered revenue or higher conversion because you installed either product. This page will not either.

08

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you want brand or theme work. Duplicate the theme, ship one homepage pass this week. That is the design job. No ops install required for a first pass. Hire a theme / design shop when that scoped redesign is what you actually need.

Pay for help when the gap is wiring — lead capture not dying in DMs, ops alerts in a channel you already check, a checkout-ready workflow instead of a draft in Klaviyo plus a native toggle you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme agency SOW, not a Gorgias implementation, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a support VA, not a brand or design job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a Shopify theme customization or small redesign typically runs a few thousand dollars; full brand + theme rebuilds often land $5,000–$25,000+. A Shopify Flow or app automation install typically runs $500–$2,500. A Klaviyo-only flow rebuild typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is a one-time 72-hour install of three systems on the stack you already pay for — not a monthly seat, not a recovered-revenue number, not a conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: a redesigned theme as the deliverable, recovered checkout revenue, a lift in conversion, fewer tickets as a guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
