Shopify tip at checkout missing — or tip amounts not saving.

Several checkout products can look like “something is missing next to pay.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when the tip / gratuity option is missing at checkout, or a selected tip does not stick through payment (checkout settings, Plus tipping, Markets). Shop Pay / accelerated checkout button missing is shop-pay-not-showing. Store credit / account credit not applying is shopify-store-credit-not-applying. Typed discount codes not applying is discount-code-not-applying. Thank-you / order status / Checkout Extensibility upgrade breakage is checkout-extensibility-upgrade-broken. Six ordinary reasons tipping fails: Settings → Checkout tipping is off or tip percentages were cleared, the store is on a plan / surface that does not expose tipping the way support expects, Markets presents a currency whose tip presets were never configured, a checkout UI extension or tip / donation app overwrites the native tip block, a selected tip resets when shipping or payment method changes, or support tested Shop Pay / store credit / discount codes / extensibility and called it “tipping.” Walk them in that order. On the live storefront (not theme editor preview), start checkout on the failing market. Capture: whether a Tip / Add tip block appears before pay, the Shopify plan (Plus vs non-Plus) if your team relies on Plus tipping docs, Markets country / currency, whether selecting 10% / 15% / custom tip updates the order summary and survives payment-method changes, and any tip / donation / checkout UI extension installed. Honest proof: if the only problem is that Shop Pay is missing as a button, leave for shop-pay-not-showing. If store / account credit will not reduce the total, leave for shopify-store-credit-not-applying. If a typed discount code fails, leave for discount-code-not-applying. If thank-you / order status extensions broke after moving off checkout.liquid, leave for checkout-extensibility-upgrade-broken. Do not mix those proofs with a missing or non-sticky tip line.

Native tip at checkout lives in Admin checkout settings — not in the theme editor and not in a discount. If tipping is disabled, tip percentage presets are empty, or a custom tip option was turned off after a staff edit, buyers never see the block. Draft / unpublished checkout customizations can also hide tipping on one channel while another still shows it.

Fix path: Settings → Checkout (and related tipping / tip options controls for your plan). Turn tipping on. Set at least one percentage or allow custom tip. Save. Retest live checkout on the same market where buyers complained. If the tip block appears but amounts never stick, skip to the “not saving” section — that is a different failure mode than a missing block.

Some tipping docs and Plus checkout surfaces assume Shopify Plus checkout branding / Checkout Extensibility. A non-Plus store following Plus-only steps will think tipping is “broken” when the control never existed on that plan. Separately, Markets can show a different currency than the tip presets were authored for — buyers on a EUR / CAD / GBP market may see blank tip chips or odd amounts when presets were only set for the primary shop currency.

Fix path: confirm plan eligibility for the tipping feature you expect. Note Markets country and currency on the failing checkout. Align tip presets / custom tip to that currency, or retest on the market that matches how tipping was configured. If the symptom is wrong displayed prices (not missing tip UI), that is shopify-markets-currency-wrong — a different product. If thank-you / order status extensions are the real breakage after an extensibility upgrade, use checkout-extensibility-upgrade-broken.

A tip can appear, update the summary, then drop when the buyer changes shipping, payment method, or Shop Pay / wallet flow — or when a tip / donation / checkout UI extension re-renders the payment column and clears the tip attribute. Browser extensions, aggressive cookie banners, and double-submit on Pay can also leave Admin without the tip the buyer thought they chose.

Fix path: select a tip, then change shipping and payment once each — note whether the tip survives. Temporarily disable tip / donation / checkout UI extensions on the live checkout customization. Retest without browser extensions and with a normal card path (not only Shop Pay). Cookie consent blocking checkout is related but different — cookie-banner-blocking-checkout. A tip that correctly stays $0 when the buyer clears it is not a bug.

Shop Pay / accelerated checkout button missing is shop-pay-not-showing. Store credit / account credit not applying is shopify-store-credit-not-applying. Typed discount code not applying is discount-code-not-applying. Checkout Extensibility / thank-you upgrade broken is checkout-extensibility-upgrade-broken.

The only honest test for this page: tip at checkout is missing, or a selected tip does not save through payment — fixable with checkout tipping settings on, Plus / plan eligibility understood, Markets tip presets aligned, and conflicting tip / donation / checkout UI extensions off — not a missing Shop Pay button alone, not missing store credit alone, not a typed code failure alone, not thank-you extensibility alone. Capture tip UI + Markets currency + settings + extensions, fix the path. Anything else is a different product.
