Playbook · Shopify theme app extensions / app blocks not appearing in theme editor
Shopify theme app extensions / app blocks not appearing in the theme editor.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose theme app extension, app block, or App embed never shows up in Online Store → Themes → Customize — Add block missing the app, App embeds list empty, Online Store 2.0 / JSON templates required, deep-link theme editor URL pointing at the wrong theme, or the app not fully installed with theme extension access. DIY-first: prove install vs OS 2.0 vs App embeds vs deep link; repair the editor path; Save and re-open Customize. Distinct from metafields not showing on storefront, metaobjects not showing, Inbox chat not showing, Forms not submitting, and sticky add to cart missing. Also distinct from app embed not loading on the live storefront (editor empty vs storefront silent). No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01
Theme app extensions missing in editor — not metafields, metaobjects, Inbox, Forms, sticky ATC.
“App block,” “theme extension,” and “not showing” cover several different problems. This page is only when the theme app extension or app block never appears in the theme editor — Add block / App embeds empty or missing the app. Product/variant metafields defined but blank on the storefront are shopify-metafields-not-showing-on-storefront. Metaobject entries / dynamic sources missing are shopify-metaobjects-not-showing. Shopify Inbox chat bubble missing on the storefront is shopify-inbox-chat-not-showing. Forms / contact form not submitting is shopify-forms-not-submitting. Sticky / floating add to cart bar missing is shopify-sticky-add-to-cart-missing. An embed that is toggled on in the editor but never loads on the live URL is app-embed-not-loading.

Prove app install vs Online Store 2.0 vs App embeds vs deep link.
Open Apps, Themes, and Customize for the published theme before you blame the vendor or rewrite Liquid. Capture five proofs:
- App install: Settings → Apps and sales channels — is the app installed, not pending, and does its status page say theme extension / Online Store is connected?
- Theme generation: Online Store → Themes — is Current an Online Store 2.0 / JSON template theme? Vintage Liquid-only themes often cannot list modern app blocks.
- App embeds: Customize → App embeds (puzzle / embeds panel) — does the extension appear at all? Is the toggle Off?
- Add block: on the template you care about (product, collection, index), does Add block / Add section list the app under Apps?
- Deep link: if you opened Customize from an app “Add to theme” button, does the URL target the published theme ID and the correct extension handle — or a draft / deleted theme?
03
App install, scopes, and theme app extension registration.
Theme app extensions only register after a successful install (or re-auth) with the scopes the partner needs. Common misses:
- App listed in Apps but install incomplete — reopen the app and finish “Activate theme extension” / “Enable app embed.”
- Staff account missing Themes / Apps permissions — open Customize as the store owner or a staff role that can edit themes.
- Development store vs transfer / live store — extension was enabled on the old shop ID; reinstall on the production shop.
- App uninstalled then reinstalled without refreshing the theme editor — hard-refresh Customize or log out/in after reinstall.
If the app never appears under App embeds or Add block after a clean reinstall on an OS 2.0 theme, that is an app-side registration issue — contact the app, not a metafield definition fix.
04
Online Store 2.0 / JSON templates and Add block empty.
Most modern theme app extensions require Online Store 2.0 sections that declare @app blocks. If Add block never lists Apps:
- Confirm you are on a JSON template (product.json, collection.json, index.json) — not a legacy
.liquid-only template with no section groups. - Some apps only register blocks on specific templates (e.g. product). Open the product template, not the home page, when hunting for the block.
- Section groups / JSON templates broken or theme customizer blank is a different path — see json-templates-section-groups-broken.
- Theme editor Save / Publish failing after you add a block is theme-editor-publish-failing— different from the block never listing at all.
05
App embeds toggle off, wrong theme, broken deep link.
App embeds are global. App blocks are per-section. Both can be “missing” for boring reasons:
- App embeds panel: extension listed but toggle Off — enable, Save, then preview the storefront.
- Editing a draft / unpublished theme while the app deep-linked to Current — switch themes in the editor header, or publish the draft you configured.
- Deep link from the app admin opens an old theme ID — copy the Customize URL from Online Store → Themes → Current → Customize instead of the bookmarked app link.
- Browser / admin cache — hard refresh, or try an incognito session as the owner account.
Once the extension appears and is enabled in the editor, if the live storefront still never loads the embed script, switch to app-embed-not-loading.
06
You tested metafields, metaobjects, Inbox, Forms, or sticky ATC instead.
Wrong playbook waste is common here:
- Metafield definition / namespace / dynamic source blank on storefront → shopify-metafields-not-showing-on-storefront or product-metafields-not-showing
- Metaobjects / entries not showing → shopify-metaobjects-not-showing
- Inbox chat widget missing (embed already in editor) → shopify-inbox-chat-not-showing
- Forms / contact form not submitting → shopify-forms-not-submitting
- Sticky add to cart bar missing on mobile PDP → shopify-sticky-add-to-cart-missing or sticky-add-to-cart-not-working
- App embed enabled in editor but silent on live storefront → app-embed-not-loading
Stay here only when the theme app extension / app block never appears in the theme editor itself.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove app install vs OS 2.0 vs App embeds vs deep link, enable the extension on the published theme, prove Add block lists the app, and stop confusing metafields / metaobjects / Inbox / Forms / sticky ATC with an empty theme editor. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: app embed storefront, metafields, metaobjects, Inbox chat.
Pay for help when the work is not flipping one App embeds toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying behind a missing theme-extension path, checkout and ops exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme agency retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.
Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever theme-editor guarantee, a custom theme rewrite retainer, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
