Playbook · Shopify collection / product card quick add failing

Shopify collection / product card quick add to cart failing or modal blank.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose collection or product card quick add (Quick add, Quick shop, card Add to cart) is failing — the button does nothing, Network shows a failed /cart/add.js, or the quick-add modal opens blank with no product form. DIY-first: prove the card control exists on Current theme, prove a click posts a variant id or loads section HTML into the sheet, then isolate missing ids, section JS, AJAX cart drawer, and quick-add apps. Distinct from Buy Button not loading, variant picker broken, Hydrogen cart broken, and upsell popup not showing. Soft-link quick-view-not-working when the full quick-view product preview (gallery + description) is the broken surface rather than card quick add / blank sheet. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Collection / product-card quick add failing — not Buy Button, variant picker, Hydrogen cart, upsell popup.

Several products can look like “I cannot add from the grid.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when the product card quick add control on a collection, featured collection, or search grid fails — silent click, failed cart AJAX, or a blank quick-add modal/sheet. External Buy Button / Storefront embed on another site is buy-button-not-loading. PDP option selectors that will not accept size/color are variant-picker-broken. Headless Hydrogen / Storefront API cart empty after add is hydrogen-cart-broken. Post-add-to-cart upsell / cross-sell offers that never appear are upsell-popup-not-showing. Soft-link quick-view-not-working when shoppers expect a full quick-view preview (media + copy) and that modal never mounts or stays empty. Soft-link cart-drawer-not-updating when the add succeeds but the drawer UI never refreshes.

02

Prove the card button posts to cart or opens a modal with a product form.

On the Current theme live collection (not only Theme editor Preview), find a product card with Quick add / Quick shop / card Add. Click it once on a single-variant product and once on a multi-variant product. Watch Network for POST /cart/add.js or a section/rendering request that should hydrate the sheet. Confirm the request body or query includes a real id (variant id). Open Console before the click: a TypeError in card or collection section JS means broken theme JS, not inventory. If the modal opens but the body is empty (no title, price, or form), the quick-add modal is blank — stay on this page. If PDP Add to cart works and only the card path fails, you have isolated card/section wiring.

03

Missing variant id on cards, multi-variant products without a picker in the sheet.

Card quick add usually posts the first available variant id for single-variant products. If Liquid or a section setting omits product.selected_or_first_available_variant.id, the button looks live and the POST returns 422 / “Cannot find variant.” Multi-variant products need either a mini picker in the quick-add sheet or a redirect to the PDP — a sheet that opens with no options and no id will stay blank or fail silently. That is not the same as a broken PDP variant picker; fix the card/sheet surface first. Sold-out cards with no available variant can also disable quick add while the badge still says “Quick add” — check inventory and variant inventory policy.

04

Collection section JS, /cart/add.js errors, blank quick-add modal fetch.

Online Store 2.0 themes often load quick add through collection card sections, product-form snippets, or a Section Rendering API fetch into a modal. A recent theme edit, minify error, or missing data-product-url / section id leaves the sheet empty. Failed /cart/add.js responses (4xx / HTML login page from password mode / bot protection) look like “quick add failing.” Confirm the store is not stuck on the password page for the market you are testing. Preview the same collection on Dawn (or your last known-good theme) to split theme vs product data. If Save in the theme editor fails after an embed, see app-embed-blocking-theme.

05

Quick-add apps, cart drawer conflicts, cookie / privacy blocking AJAX add.

Third-party quick-add, quick-view, and AJAX cart apps often replace the theme card button. Two apps fighting for the same click can open a blank overlay. Disable App embeds one at a time on a duplicate theme, then re-enable the winner. If the add succeeds in Network but the drawer never shows the line item, go to cart-drawer-not-updating. Cookie / Customer Privacy banners that intercept the first tap can look like dead quick add — see cookie-banner-blocking-checkout. Full quick-view gallery/modals that never open belong on quick-view-not-working or quick-view-modal-not-opening, not this page.

06

You tested Buy Button, variant picker, Hydrogen cart, or upsell popup instead.

Buy Button / Storefront embed on an external site is buy-button-not-loading. PDP option selectors that will not accept a click are variant-picker-broken. Hydrogen / headless cart mutations failing is hydrogen-cart-broken. Post-ATC upsell / cross-sell popups that never appear are upsell-popup-not-showing. Do not rebuild a Buy Button embed or a Hydrogen cart until you have proven whether the Online Store collection card quick add posts a variant id or hydrates its sheet.
