Playbook · Shopify theme app embed blocking editor / layout
Shopify theme app embed enabled but blocking theme editor save or breaking storefront layout.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose theme app embed is toggled on and either theme editor Save / Publish fails or the live storefront layout breaks — overlap over the header, blank sections, unclickable add-to-cart, sticky bar collisions. DIY-first: prove which App embed is on for Current theme, toggle off one by one, repair CSS/JS or remove the bad embed. Distinct from theme app extensions not appearing, Online Store 2.0 section groups broken, admin app blank after install, Online Store INP failing, and Online Store CLS failing. Soft-link app embed not loading when the embed never mounts at all. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01
App embed blocking editor/layout — not extensions missing, OS2 section groups, admin blank, INP, CLS.
Several products can look like “the theme app broke the store.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when an App embed is enabled and either the theme editor cannot Save / Publish or the live layout is visibly broken. App blocks / theme app extensions that never show in the theme editor picker are theme-app-extensions-not-appearing. Header/footer section groups that fail to render are online-store-2-section-groups-broken. An embedded admin app that white-screens after install is admin-app-blank-after-install. Slow interactions / INP is shopify-inp-failing. Layout shift / CLS is shopify-cls-failing. If the embed never appears on the storefront at all, use app-embed-not-loading.
Six ordinary reasons an enabled embed blocks save or breaks layout: the newest App embed injects a script that throws in the theme editor, two embeds fight over the same DOM hook, CSS from the embed covers the sticky header or cart drawer, content_for_header / theme.liquid injection order changed after a theme update, you edited a draft theme while Current still has the bad embed, or you are debugging “extensions not appearing,” OS2 section groups, admin blank, INP, or CLS instead. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Online Store. You do not need another seat to turn an App embed off.
02
Prove which App embed is on for Current theme (not a draft).
Online Store → Themes → Customize on the Current theme → App embeds (theme settings / left rail). Screenshot every embed that is On. Note the app name and when it was last toggled. Open the live storefront in a private window and hard-refresh. Confirm the break is on Current, not a draft you forgot to publish.
If Save / Publish throws a toast or the customizer freezes, capture the error text and open DevTools → Console while the editor is open. An enabled embed that throws during editor boot often shows a red stack from the app’s JS, not from your theme sections.
03
Theme editor Save / Publish blocked by an enabled app embed.
When Save or Publish fails only after a specific App embed was enabled, turn that embed Off, reload Customize, and retry Save. If Save works with the embed off, the embed (or its settings schema) is the blocker — not your section JSON. Re-enable one setting at a time inside that embed’s panel. Uninstall the app only after you confirm Current publishes cleanly without it.
Do not confuse this with theme editor publish failing for JSON template / section errors (theme-editor-publish-failing) or with OS2 section groups that fail to render. Those pages are different products. This page is specifically: an enabled App embed that blocks editor save or corrupts the live layout.
04
Storefront layout broken: overlap, blank header, dead clicks, sticky collision.
Typical layout failures from a bad embed: a full-screen overlay with pointer-events that blocks add-to-cart, a sticky chat / review / consent bar covering the header, CSS that sets body overflow hidden and traps scroll, or a script that removes the main product form. In DevTools Elements, find the injected node (often near the end of body or inside a shopify-section wrapper the app owns). Disable the matching App embed and reload.
If the page “looks fine” but CLS / INP scores are bad without a broken layout, that is shopify-cls-failing or shopify-inp-failing— different products. This page is when buyers cannot use the page because the embed broke layout or the editor cannot save.
05
Isolate by toggling App embeds off one by one.
Start with the newest embed you enabled. Toggle Off → Save → hard-refresh the live URL → retry the broken action (editor Save or the layout click path). If the break clears, you found the culprit. Leave it off until the app vendor ships a fix, or reconfigure only the settings that do not inject the bad overlay.
If every embed must stay on for business reasons, open the app’s admin and look for “load on all pages” / “exclude checkout” / “defer script” options. Prefer loading the embed only on the templates that need it. Then retest Save and the storefront.
06
content_for_header / theme.liquid injection and CSS/JS collisions.
Theme app embeds inject through Shopify’s App embeds system (not by pasting script tags into theme.liquid yourself). Still, after a theme update, content_for_header order and your custom CSS can collide with the embed’s fixed / sticky UI. Check for duplicate jQuery / React copies, z-index wars with the header, and CSS that sets position:fixed on large wrappers. Prefer fixing in the app’s settings or by disabling the embed — do not “patch” by deleting content_for_header.
If you recently migrated themes, confirm App embeds were re-enabled on the new Current theme intentionally. An embed that was harmless on Dawn can break a heavily customized OS 2.0 theme with a sticky ATC bar and a cart drawer.
07
You tested extensions-not-appearing, OS2 section groups, admin blank, INP, or CLS instead.
Theme app extensions / app blocks missing from the theme editor picker is theme-app-extensions-not-appearing. Online Store 2.0 section groups broken is online-store-2-section-groups-broken. Admin embedded app blank after install is admin-app-blank-after-install. INP failing from heavy JS is shopify-inp-failing. CLS failing from fonts / images / embeds is shopify-cls-failing. Embed never mounts is app-embed-not-loading.
The only honest test for this page: an App embed is On, and either theme editor Save/Publish fails or the live layout is broken. Toggle the embed off, prove the break clears, then repair or remove. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove which App embed is on for Current, toggle off one by one until Save and layout recover, fix CSS/JS collisions or remove the bad embed, and stop confusing extensions-not-appearing / OS2 section groups / admin blank / INP / CLS with an enabled embed that breaks the editor or layout. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Pay for help when the work is not the App embeds toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.
Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever theme-embed guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
