Playbook · App extensions config metafield blank

Shopify app extensions config metafield blank? Prove the toml declaration, deploy, and one runtime read.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner or app operator whose metafield is blank because app extensions config never declared or deployed the namespace.key—empty shopify.extension.toml metafields, wrong target, or a store still running an older extension version. Start with the toml, the deployed app version, and one runtime log—not with deleting the metafield definition. This is distinct from theme app extensions API metafield blank and from Admin UI extensions metafield blank when the miss is only about theme blocks or Admin UI, not app extension config packaging.

01

A blank app-extension config metafield is not a theme TAE miss.

Use this page when the extension binary loads but metafield access is empty because [[extensions.metafields]] (or equivalent) is missing, mistyped, or not on the version the merchant installed. If the theme editor block never appears, use theme app extensions not appearing. If Admin UI extension UI mounts but the field is blank at query time, start with Admin UI extensions metafield blank.

Capture app handle, extension UID, toml hash, deployed version, API version, and one runtime metafield log before rotating client secrets.

02

Prove shopify.extension.toml metafields and the exact target.

Open the extension's shopify.extension.toml. Confirm the metafields entries list the namespace and key you expect, on the owner type the extension actually reads (Product, Shop, Customer, Order, etc.). A checkout or Admin target that never declares the metafield will correctly return blank at runtime even when Admin GraphiQL shows the value.

Diff local toml against the last committed release. Soft-link OAuth scopes metafield blank only when the miss is access scopes, not extension packaging.

03

Confirm deploy pushed the same config the store is running.

Run (or review) the last shopify app deploy / Partner version release. Match extension version on the merchant's installed app to the commit that contains the metafields block. A preview app or stale production version explains “works in one store, blank in another.”

Do not conflate CLI generate scaffolding with a live release. Soft-link CLI app metafield blank when the miss is local CLI scaffolding rather than a deployed extension config.

04

Read the metafield once inside the extension runtime.

In the running extension, log the metafield API result for one known GID that GraphiQL already returns. Classify: undefined because undeclared, null value on the owner, wrong namespace.key, wrong owner type, or blocked by scopes. Keep Admin GraphQL proof separate from extension config proof.

If Partner Dashboard APIs report different app metadata than your toml, switch to Partner dashboard API metafield missing for that surface.

05

Retest one reversible declaration and keep a proof packet.

Add or correct one metafields entry, deploy to a non-production app version if available, reinstall or update on a test shop, and re-read the same GID. Record toml snippet, deploy version id, installed app version, runtime log, and GraphiQL row.

Classify the miss as missing toml entry, wrong target/owner, undeployed version, null definition value, or scope denial. Keep it separate from theme app extension API blanks and from Functions API metafield misses (Functions API metafield missing).

06

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when one toml line, deploy version, or runtime owner mismatch explains the blank. Keep the proof packet so future extension releases stay reversible.

Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, extension targets, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
