Playbook · Partner Dashboard API metafield missing
Shopify Partner Dashboard API metafield missing? Prove the Partner token, app context, and selection.
Written for a Shopify partner or DTC operator whose metafield is missing on Partner Dashboard / Partner API tooling while the same namespace.key returns in the shop's Admin GraphQL. Start with Partner token org, app id, and the exact GraphQL document—not with deleting the metafield definition. This is distinct from Admin GraphQL metafield missing (shop Admin selection without Partner context) and from app extensions config metafield blank when the miss is extension packaging rather than Partner API reads.

01
A Partner API metafield miss is not an Admin GraphQL miss.
Use this page when Partner Dashboard scripts, Partner API GraphQL, or partner-facing tooling omit a metafield that shop Admin GraphiQL already returns. If Admin itself is blank, start with Admin GraphQL metafield missing. If the extension never declared the field, use app extensions config metafield blank.
Capture Partner org id, API token fingerprint (not the secret), app id, API version, GraphQL document hash, and one Admin comparison GID before rotating credentials.
02
Prove Partner API token and app context.
Confirm the call uses a Partner API credential tied to the correct organization and app—not a shop Admin access token, and not a different app's client. Wrong org or app id can make app-level metafield metadata look “missing” even when the merchant shop still has the definition.
Soft-link custom app scopes missing when the issue is shop custom-app scopes rather than Partner Dashboard API context.
03
Prove the Partner GraphQL selection and exact namespace.key.
Open the exact GraphQL string. Confirm metafield(namespace: "…", key: "…") or an explicit metafields connection on the owner type you expect. Partner surfaces often query AppInstallation / App objects; selecting only app name/version will correctly omit shop metafields.
If cost or throttle errors truncate the payload, soft-link GraphQL cost limits metafield missing and reduce the document before blaming the definition.
04
Compare one Admin GraphQL row to the Partner response.
Against one product/customer/shop GID, run Admin GraphiQL for the same namespace.key. If Admin returns the value and Partner does not, classify: wrong API (Partner vs Admin), missing selection, wrong owner, or app-metadata-only query. Do not delete the definition based on Partner tooling alone.
Keep OAuth scope denials separate—use OAuth scopes metafield blank when Admin also fails for scope reasons.
05
Retest one reversible Partner call and keep a proof packet.
Issue one reduced Partner GraphQL call with an explicit metafield selection (or confirm the surface cannot read shop metafields and document that limit). Record token org, app id, document, Admin comparison, and response snippet.
Classify the miss as wrong credential context, missing selection, Partner surface limitation, null definition, or cost truncation. Keep it separate from Admin bulk ops blanks (Admin API bulk ops metafield blank) and extension config blanks.
06
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one token/org mismatch, selection gap, or Partner-vs-Admin surface limit explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so partner tooling stays reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, partner apps, Admin workflows, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops can connect the agreed workflow in a 72-hour window after collaborator access. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
