Playbook · CLI app metafield blank

Shopify CLI app metafield blank? Prove scaffold scopes, Admin selection, and one authenticated route.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Shopify CLI scaffolded app metafield is filled in Admin but returns null, empty, or missing in the app. Start with shopify.app.toml scopes, definition ownership, exact namespace.key, and one Admin GraphQL selection—not with a full reinstall. This is distinct from Remix app metafield blank (loader-focused) and from OAuth scopes metafield blank when the only miss is a scope grant after reauth.

01

A blank CLI app metafield is not automatically a blank Admin iframe or a theme miss.

Use this page when shopify app dev / Partner Dashboard deploy succeeds and auth works, but a metafield the CLI app should read is null or absent. If the whole Admin iframe is white after install, use Admin app blank after install. If the miss is Liquid on the Online Store, use Liquid render metafield blank.

Capture app handle, TOML scopes, resource GID, namespace.key, CLI version, and the exact GraphQL selection before rotating client secrets.

02

Prove TOML scopes, app handle, and definition ownership.

Open shopify.app.toml and record access_scopes against the resource you query (for example read_products / write_products). Confirm the metafield definition is owned by the same app when the field is app-owned. Soft-link custom app scopes missing when reauth is required after a TOML change.

Run shopify app info (or Partner Dashboard) and confirm the installed shop matches the session the route uses. A stale tunnel or wrong shop in the CLI config looks like a blank metafield.

03

Check Admin GraphQL selection and one saved value together.

In Settings → Custom data, open the definition, save a short reversible test value on the same owner, and confirm it survives. Select metafield(namespace: "…", key: "…") { value type } or an explicit metafields list in GraphiQL with the same session family the CLI app uses.

If GraphiQL returns the test value but the app does not, fix selection, session, or cached loader data—not every product. Keep this distinct from Admin GraphQL metafield missing when the miss is only in GraphiQL without a CLI app surface.

04

Trace one authenticated CLI app route or extension.

CLI scaffolds often mix Remix loaders, App Bridge, and UI extensions. Record whether the blank appears in an authenticated admin route, an action/block extension, or a webhook consumer. Soft-link App Bridge metafield blank and Admin action extension metafield blank when those surfaces are the real miss.

Confirm the resource GID in the URL matches the resource you edited. Log field presence without logging access tokens.

05

Retest one resource and keep a small proof packet.

Use one product (or shop), one authenticated route, and one CLI session. Record TOML scopes, resource GID, namespace.key, type, Admin value, GraphiQL result, and app JSON. Reinstall only if the metafield is demonstrably Admin-readable and selected in the live route.

Classify the miss as definition/value, missing scope, wrong selection, wrong shop/session, or stale tunnel. Keep it separate from Remix-only loader blanks and theme Liquid blanks.

06

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when one TOML scope, definition, GraphQL selection, or session check explains the blank. Keep the proof packet so future CLI upgrades stay reversible.

Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, catalogs, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
