Playbook · Search & Discovery collection / storefront filters broken
Shopify Search & Discovery filters broken or empty on collections.
Written for a Shopify owner or ops lead whose Search & Discovery collection filters or storefront faceted filters stay broken or empty. DIY-first: prove the empty filter sidebar; check Search & Discovery → Filters; enable filterable sources (options, tags, metafields); publish the theme Filters section; retest AJAX / storefront filtering. Distinct from product recommendations blank, collection rules not matching, customer metafield not saving / product metafields not showing, and Online Store 2.0 section groups broken. No earnings claims, no conversion-lift math, no invented case studies.

Search & Discovery filters broken — not product recommendations blank, collection rules, metafields, or OS 2.0 section groups.
Several “products will not filter / appear in this list” bugs look alike. They do not share one fix. This page is only when Shopify Search & Discovery collection filters or storefront faceted filters stay broken or empty. When product recommendations / related products stay blank on a PDP, open product recommendations blank. When automated / smart collection rules exclude products that should match, open collection rules not matching. When a customer metafield will not save in admin, open customer metafield not saving; when product metafields do not render on the storefront, open product metafields not showing or metafields not showing on storefront. When Online Store 2.0 header/footer section groups will not render, open Online Store 2.0 section groups broken. This page is only: Search & Discovery / storefront collection filters broken or empty.
Six ordinary reasons filters stay broken or empty: Search & Discovery Filters tab has no enabled filters (or they were never published); filterable metafield / option sources missing or not marked filterable; theme collection template missing Filters / Facets section or Search & Discovery app block; storefront filtering AJAX / JSON returning empty; availability or Markets hiding every matching product after a facet is selected; a third party filter app fighting native Search & Discovery. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify and Search & Discovery. You do not need another facets SaaS to prove collection filters can render.
02
Prove filters are broken or empty while the collection page otherwise loads.
Open a live collection that has products. Screenshot the empty or broken filter sidebar / facet chips. Confirm the product grid still lists items before any filter is applied — this is not a whole-collection Liquid crash (liquid error on product page). In Apps → Search & Discovery → Filters, note which filters exist and whether they are enabled. In the theme editor on the collection template, note whether a Filters section or Search & Discovery filter block exists and is enabled. In DevTools → Network, look for empty storefront filtering / Search & Discovery filter responses or failed AJAX.
If the collection loads but filters are blank or selecting a facet returns nothing incorrectly, stay here. If the failure is only blank related products on a PDP, leave for product recommendations blank. If products are missing from an automated collection because rules do not match (not the filter UI), leave for collection rules not matching.
03
Repair Search & Discovery Filters, filterable sources, and theme filter UI.
In Search & Discovery → Filters, add or re-enable availability, price, product options, vendor, tags, and any metafields marked filterable; save and publish. Confirm option names and metafield definitions match what the theme facet labels expect. On the collection JSON template, add or enable the Filters section / Search & Discovery app block; publish the theme. Retest in a clean browser; clear any app-side filter cache. Soft note: an older overlap path for empty Filters / boosts is Search & Discovery filters empty; theme-only facet UI without naming S&D admin is collection filters not working.
Soft note: product recommendations blank is product recommendations blank; broken header/footer section groups are Online Store 2.0 section groups broken. Latch’s 72-hour install is ops wiring on the live store — not a conversion-lift guarantee and not a merchandising agency retainer.
04
Checklist and how to prove storefront filters work.
Checklist: (1) screenshot empty/broken filters on a live collection, (2) confirm the collection grid otherwise loads, (3) check Search & Discovery → Filters enabled/published, (4) confirm filterable options / metafields, (5) enable Filters section or app block on the collection template, (6) publish theme, (7) retest clean browser / clear app cache, (8) if only product recommendations / collection rules / metafields / OS 2.0 section groups is wrong, switch playbooks.
Prove it: after the fix, the filter sidebar must show real facet values, and selecting a filter must narrow the product grid to matching published products. If filters work but related products on a PDP stay blank, open product recommendations blank.
05
You tested product recommendations, collection rules, metafields, or OS 2.0 section groups instead.
Product recommendations / related products blank on the PDP is product recommendations blank. Automated collection / smart collection rules not matching is collection rules not matching. Customer metafield not saving is customer metafield not saving; product metafields not showing on storefront are product metafields not showing / metafields not showing on storefront. Online Store 2.0 section groups broken is Online Store 2.0 section groups broken. None of those fix Search & Discovery collection / storefront filters that stay broken or empty.
Finish prove broken filters → Search & Discovery Filters / filterable sources / theme Filters section → facets-on-collection proof first. Only then open the related playbook that matches the remaining symptom.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove the empty or broken filter UI, configure Search & Discovery Filters and filterable sources, enable the theme Filters section or app block, publish, and stop treating product recommendations / collection rules / metafields / OS 2.0 section groups as the same bug. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: product recommendations blank, collection rules, customer metafield, OS 2.0 section groups.
Pay $997 when the gap is wiring the stack you already pay for — lead capture, ops alerts, checkout-ready workflow on the live store — not when you only need collection filters to render. One live store. No earnings claims, no ticket-cut promises, no conversion-lift math. Checkout: https://whop.com/checkout/plan_jHoFkwA8EXHTD.
