Playbook · Returns portal not working / link broken
Shopify returns portal not working — or the self-serve return link is broken.
Written for a Shopify owner whose customer cannot open the self-serve returns portal (native Shopify Returns, Returnly, Loop, Happy Returns style), or whose return link is broken / expired / 404 — usually returns not enabled for the order window, customer accounts required but login broken, refund / return policy page pointing at the wrong URL, theme app embed off, or a stale portal deep link. DIY-first: prove returns product → eligibility → accounts → policy link → portal URL → embed. Distinct from refund email not sending, order status page blank, and store credit not applying. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01
Returns portal broken — not refund email, order status blank, store credit.
Several products can look like “returns are broken.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only when the self-serve returns portal will not open, errors, or the return link is broken. Native refund / order cancelled email silence is refund-email-not-sending. Thank-you / order status / tracking page blank is shopify-order-status-page-blank. Store credit / account credit not applying at checkout is shopify-store-credit-not-applying.
Also not this page: return-request email silence alone (return-request-email-not-sending), gift card purchase / delivery failure, or a Klaviyo “return” flow you built yourself. Those are different templates and products. Use this playbook when the complaint is the portal UI / broken portal link — not “the refund confirmation email never arrived.”
02
Shopify Returns / Returnly / Loop enabled + order eligibility.
Open Settings → Customer accounts (and Returns / Shopify Returns where your plan exposes it), or your returns app admin (Returnly, Loop, Happy Returns, AfterShip Returns, etc.). Self-serve returns must be on for the sales channels and markets you sell in. A paused app plan, unpublished app, or returns disabled for a market produces a blank or “not available” portal that looks like a theme bug.
Check order eligibility: return window (e.g. 30 days from fulfillment), excluded product tags / final sale, final-sale collections, digital / gift card line items, and already-returned or partially refunded orders. An ineligible order often shows a dead portal or a “this order cannot be returned” dead end — fix eligibility rules before rebuilding the theme.
Confirm the order is fulfilled (or past the app’s eligible status). Many portals will not generate a return for unfulfilled / cancelled / already-refunded-out orders. Retest with a recent fulfilled paid order inside the window — not a draft, not a POS cash sale your app does not support, not a B2B company order blocked by policy.
03
Customer accounts, refund policy link, portal URL, theme app embed.
Many self-serve portals require the buyer to be logged into customer accounts (classic or new). If login redirects loop or Multipass / Shop login fails, the portal never loads — that is a accounts bug first (shopify-customer-accounts-login-broken), then come back here once login works.
Check your refund / return policy page and footer / menu link. The link must point at the live portal URL from Shopify Returns or your returns app — not an old Returnly subdomain you cancelled, not a 404 policy page, not a mailto: that skips the portal. Copy the portal URL from the app admin and paste it into the policy page and a menu item customers can find.
Broken / expired deep links from old return emails are common. Do not keep forwarding last month’s tokenized URL. Open the portal from admin (or generate a fresh customer link), then have the customer start again while logged in. Soft-404 portal paths after an app migration also look like “Shopify is down.”
In the theme editor, confirm the returns app embed / theme app block is enabled on the published theme (not only the draft). A disabled embed, conflicting cookie banner, or CSP blocking the app domain can blank the portal iframe. Preview the published theme as a customer, not only as admin.
04
You tested refund email, order status, store credit, or return-request email instead.
Refund / order cancelled email silence is refund-email-not-sending. Order status / thank-you page blank is shopify-order-status-page-blank. Store credit not applying is shopify-store-credit-not-applying. Return-request email silence alone is return-request-email-not-sending.
The only honest test for this page: eligible fulfilled order inside the return window, returns product / app on, customer logged into accounts if required, refund policy / menu link pointing at the live portal URL, theme app embed on for the published theme, fresh portal link (not an expired email deep link). Anything else is a different product.
05
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: turn Shopify Returns or your returns app on, fix eligibility / return window, prove customer accounts login, point the refund policy and menu at the live portal URL, enable the theme app embed on the published theme, and stop confusing refund email / order status / store credit with a broken portal. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: refund email, order status page blank, store credit, return-request email, customer accounts login.
Pay for help when the work is not the returns toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, storefront and checkout-ready exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.
Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever returns-portal-uptime guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
