Playbook · Shopify image alt missing bulk

Product image alt text is blank across the catalog.

Written for a Shopify owner who finds empty or missing alt text on many product images — Admin Media Alt blank, storefront alt="", Search Console image / accessibility flags at scale — or you chased CDN 404s, Product JSON-LD, LCP / lazy-load, or Open Graph instead. DIY-first: prove blanks → exact source (CSV wipe, theme, app) → bulk fill / theme fallback → retest. Distinct from CDN images broken (files 404 — not empty alt), rich snippets missing / structured data missing (JSON-LD Product — not <img alt>), page speed LCP failing and lazy-load hiding above-fold, and Open Graph image missing. Soft-link meta title/description missing when search listings are the real gap, and product image zoom broken when gallery UX is the real issue. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

Empty alt in bulk — not CDN broken, rich snippets, LCP, or og:image.

Several “image SEO” bugs look alike. They do not share a fix. This page is only when many product (or collection) media records have blank Alt text so storefront markup ships empty alt attributes at catalog scale. Files that 404 on cdn.shopify.com are shopify-cdn-images-broken. Product rich results / JSON-LD missing is shopify-rich-snippets-missing or shopify-structured-data-missing. Hero LCP / lazy-load is shopify-page-speed-lcp-failing / shopify-lazy-load-hiding-above-fold. Social share image missing is shopify-open-graph-image-missing.

Soft links when the bug is adjacent: meta title/description gaps are shopify-meta-title-description-missing. Zoom / lightbox UX is shopify-product-image-zoom-broken. This playbook stays on Products → Media → Alt text blank × many SKUs → storefront empty alt → bulk fill or theme fallback.

02

Prove blank alt in Admin Media, storefront HTML, and Search Console.

Open Products → a product → Media. Click an image and check Alt text. Sample ten SKUs across collections — if most are blank, you have a bulk problem, not one forgotten PDP. On the live storefront, Inspect the main product image: empty alt="" or no alt attribute confirms theme is not inventing text either.

Soft-check recent CSV / Matrixify / Excelify / bulk product imports that left the Image Alt column empty and overwrote good alts. Soft-check SEO apps that promised auto-alt but never wrote to Media. Soft-check theme Liquid that hard-codes alt="" or drops image.alt. Soft-check variant images separately from the featured image — variants often stay blank after a featured-image-only fill.

If images themselves 404, switch to shopify-cdn-images-broken. If Google rich results complain about Product schema, use shopify-rich-snippets-missing — that is JSON-LD, not img alt. If the hero is slow or never paints, use LCP / lazy-load playbooks instead.

03

Repair via bulk edit, CSV, app, or theme fallback — then retest.

For small catalogs, edit Alt text in Admin Media with clear, unique descriptions (not keyword stuffing). For large catalogs, export products/media with Matrixify / Excelify / Shopify CSV paths that include image alt columns, fill honestly, re-import, and verify a sample. SEO apps can write alts — confirm they actually update Media, not only a private metafield. As a temporary theme guard, fall back to product.title when image.alt is blank — then still backfill real alts so you are not stuck with duplicate titles forever.

Honest retest: Admin Media shows non-empty Alt on sampled SKUs → storefront HTML has non-empty alt → variant images included → Search Console URL Inspection on a few PDPs no longer shows the same empty-alt pattern. If files still 404 after alt is filled, switch to shopify-cdn-images-broken. If meta titles/descriptions are still empty, use shopify-meta-title-description-missing.

04

You tested CDN images, JSON-LD, LCP/lazy-load, or og:image instead.

CDN images broken is shopify-cdn-images-broken. Rich snippets missing is shopify-rich-snippets-missing. Structured data missing is shopify-structured-data-missing. Page speed LCP failing is shopify-page-speed-lcp-failing. Lazy-load hiding above-fold is shopify-lazy-load-hiding-above-fold. Open Graph image missing is shopify-open-graph-image-missing.

The only honest test for this page: Products → Media → Alt text blank on many images, with storefront empty alt confirmed. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: sample Media alts, confirm storefront HTML, fix the CSV / app / theme source of blanks, bulk-fill, retest. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: CDN images broken, rich snippets missing, meta title/description missing.

Pay for help when the work is not the Alt field itself — it is connecting the stack you already have so SEO / media / accessibility / Search Console exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever alt-text guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
