Playbook · Checkout extensibility metafield missing
Shopify Checkout extensibility metafield missing? Prove upgrade surface, owner, and one write.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Checkout extensibility metafield stays missing after checkout upgrade or editor save when the app should have written it. Start with definition ownership, checkout upgrade / editor unlock, one Admin GraphQL read, and one authenticated write. This is not a Checkout UI extension runtime metafield miss on an already-loading block, and it is not a Checkout Branding API style miss.

01
A missing Checkout extensibility metafield is not automatically a UI extension runtime miss.
Use this page when checkout extensibility (upgrade, editor, or profile-level config) should expose a metafield but the field never appears. If the miss is a field inside an already-loading Checkout UI extension, use Checkout UI extension metafield blank. If the upgrade itself is broken, soft-link Checkout extensibility upgrade broken.
Do not roll back every checkout app yet. Capture the shop, checkout profile id, upgrade status, namespace.key, and whether any metafield mutation runs when the editor saves.
02
Prove the owner resource, definition, and exact saved value.
Open Settings → Custom data and confirm the definition is owned by the Shop, Checkout Profile, or other resource your checkout extensibility write targets. Record the exact namespace and key, for example checkout_ext.profile_flags, the type, and whether the app owns the definition.
Manually save a short test value in Admin, refresh, and confirm it survives. If Admin cannot store the field, fix the definition before debugging checkout editor reads.
03
Check checkout upgrade, editor, and extensibility scopes together.
Confirm checkout is on extensibility (not legacy checkout.liquid only), the checkout editor opens without lock errors, the app has the scopes needed to read/write the owner metafields, and one Admin GraphQL read returns the settings object you expect — including your namespace.key when present.
Compare branding, UI extension, and profile-level metafields: a locked editor or incomplete upgrade leaves extensibility config empty so your write never lands where merchants look. Soft-link Checkout editor locked and Checkout branding metafield missing when the miss is surface-specific. Log profile id and namespace.key only — never log personal data beyond what the shop already stores.
04
Trace one metafield write into the extensibility surface.
After a stable upgraded checkout, run one authenticated metafieldsSet for the namespace.key you recorded. Prove the same value in Admin GraphiQL and in a fresh checkout editor / extensibility read. If GraphiQL shows the test value but the editor does not, fix the extensibility mapping or read path — not the definition alone.
Keep the diagnosis distinct from Admin UI Extensions metafield blank and Checkout UI settings metafield missing. Those touch Admin UI extension panels and UI extension settings storage, not checkout extensibility upgrade/profile metafields.
05
Retest one checkout path and keep a small proof packet.
Use one test shop, one checkout profile, and one browser profile. Record profile id, upgrade status, namespace.key, type, GraphiQL value after write, checkout editor value, and whether a test checkout respects the field. Clear cached editor sessions between trials so the shop is not left with a stale read.
If the field is still missing, classify it as definition/value, incomplete upgrade, editor lock, missing write scope, mapping miss, or read-path lag. Do not add a second checkout app until one write and editor read clean on one shop.
06
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one definition, upgrade, scope, or write explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so future checkout extensibility apps stay grounded in real metafield reads.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, catalogs, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
