Playbook · Checkout UI extension metafield blank
Shopify checkout UI extension metafield blank? Prove the owner, value, input, and active version.
Written for a Shopify owner whose checkout UI extension can render but reads a metafield or custom field as blank in Admin, the extension input, or a live checkout. Start with the exact resource owner, namespace.key, saved value, access, input query, and active version. This is distinct from an extension that does not load at all and from a missing or deprecated target.

01
A blank checkout UI extension metafield is not automatically a loading or target bug.
Use this page when the extension mounts or its surrounding checkout UI is available, but the expected field is empty, null, omitted, or not reflected in the UI. If the extension never mounts, use the not-loading playbook. If the block cannot be placed because its target or slot is absent, use target missing.
Capture the checkout step, extension name, resource owner, field path, and the exact surface where the value should appear before changing the app or checkout profile.
02
Prove the resource owner and exact namespace.key before changing the query.
Decide whether the extension reads cart, customer, company, product, variant, or cart-line data. A product metafield will not appear because the input query asks for a customer field, and a company value is not automatically a cart attribute. Record one synthetic test resource and its ID.
Copy the exact namespace.key, including case, and verify the extension is reading the same owner in the live checkout context. Do not add a duplicate definition just because the label looks identical.
03
Check type, access, saved value, and test data together.
Record the definition type, validations, list or reference shape, app ownership, and access settings. Save one unmistakable, reversible test value on the exact active owner, refresh Admin, and confirm it persists. A populated definition alone is not proof that the checkout extension can read it.
Keep customer data, tokens, and passwords out of screenshots and logs. Treat an absent field, null, empty string, and an empty list as separate observations.
04
Compare the deployed input query, app access, and active extension version.
Open the extension input query and verify it selects the same owner and namespace.key. Confirm the app has the intended access, the extension version is active, and the published checkout profile uses that version. A draft query, stale generated schema, wrong owner, or inactive version can make a correct Admin value look blank.
Trace input presence separately from rendering. If the field is present in the input but the text is absent in the UI, that is a rendering or parsing issue—not proof that the metafield is missing.
05
Retest one known-valid checkout surface and preserve the proof.
Use one product, one customer or company context, and one checkout step where the extension is known to mount. Record owner ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, input field state, active version, and rendered output. Hard-refresh only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as owner, definition/value, access, query, type parsing, inactive version, or rendering. Keep it separate from target placement and extension boot failures.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one owner, definition, access, query, or active-version check explains the blank field. Keep the proof packet so future checkout changes are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, markets, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
