Playbook · Shopify checkout editor locked

Shopify checkout editor locked — cannot edit checkout extensibility or branding.

Written for a Shopify Plus owner or ops lead whose Settings → Checkout → Customize (checkout editor) is locked, greyed out, permission-denied, or otherwise cannot be edited for checkout extensibility, branding, or app blocks. DIY-first: prove Plus / checkout extensibility entitlement; compare owner vs staff Checkout permissions; remove apps that replace or lock the native editor; stop treating Branding API tokens that do not render, a missing live UI extension block, thank-you customization, or a post-purchase upsell page as the same “editor locked” bug. Distinct from Checkout Branding API not applying, checkout UI extension not loading, thank-you page customization missing, and post-purchase page not loading. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Checkout editor locked — not Branding API, UI extension, thank-you, or post-purchase.

Several checkout products can look like “we cannot change checkout.” They do not share a fix. This page is only when the checkout editor itself is locked / greyed out / permission-denied so you cannot open Customize, edit branding tokens, or place checkout app blocks. Branding saved in the editor (or via API) but live checkout still looks default is Checkout Branding API not applying. An installed checkout UI extension that does not appear on live checkout is checkout UI extension not loading. Thank-you additional scripts / UI missing after purchase is thank-you page customization missing. Post-purchase one-click upsell page blank or skipped is post-purchase page not loading.

Checkout editor locked is a plan + staff permissions + app conflict problem on the editor surface — not a live branding render miss, not a single extension runtime miss, not thank-you, and not post-purchase.

02

Prove Plus plan, staff Checkout permissions, and app conflict vs owner session.

Open Settings → Checkout. Capture: whether Customize / checkout editor is clickable or locked; any plan banner (non-Plus / extensibility required); staff role under Settings → Users and permissions (Checkout, Online store, Apps and channels); owner vs staff comparison; installed checkout branding / upsell / script apps that might replace or gate the native editor.

Split the surfaces. Editor button greyed / permission error → this page. Editor opens and saves branding, but live checkout ignores tokens → Branding API not applying. Editor shows the extension as placed, but buyers never see the block → checkout UI extension not loading. Thank-you / order status customization missing → thank-you page customization missing. Post-purchase page skipped → post-purchase page not loading.

Note identity carefully. A limited staff account without Checkout customization permission, a collaborator without Plus checkout access, or a non-Plus store without checkout extensibility will show a locked editor even when branding apps are installed. Confirm plan entitlement and the exact user session you are testing.

03

Fix plan gate, staff permissions, conflicting apps; retest Customize.

Confirm Shopify Plus (or the plan that includes checkout extensibility). On Settings → Users and permissions, grant the staff user Checkout / Online store customization access (or retest as store owner). Disable or uninstall checkout apps that force a custom checkout surface or report “managed by app” on the editor. Reopen Settings → Checkout → Customize until branding colors / logos / app blocks are editable.

After unlocking: make a harmless branding tweak (e.g. button corner radius), save, and confirm the editor remains writable. If the editor works but live checkout still ignores branding, move to Branding API not applying. If a specific app block is placed but missing for buyers, move to checkout UI extension not loading.

Retest: owner and the previously locked staff user can open Customize → edit branding / place an app block → save without a plan or permission error.

04

Checklist and how to prove the checkout editor is editable again.

  • Store plan includes checkout extensibility / Plus checkout editor (not a plan-upgrade wall alone).
  • Staff user has Checkout customization permission; owner session can open Customize as a control.
  • Conflicting checkout branding / script / upsell apps that lock or replace the native editor are disabled or corrected.
  • Settings → Checkout → Customize opens; branding tokens and app block placements can be edited and saved.
  • Retest: staff + owner both edit and save; no permission / plan banner blocks the editor.

Proof is before/after screenshots of the Customize control and a successful save in the editor — not a live Branding API render alone, not a single UI extension buyer test, not thank-you, and not post-purchase.

05

You tested Branding API, UI extension, thank-you, or post-purchase instead.

Common misfires: Checkout Branding API not applying (editor works; live tokens ignored), checkout UI extension not loading (block placed; buyer never sees it), thank-you page customization missing, post-purchase page not loading, and checkout extensibility upgrade broken. Unlock the editor here first when Customize itself is locked.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when the locked editor is a one-time permission or plan fix you can clear from this checklist — Plus entitlement, staff Checkout access, conflicting app off, retest. Pay when the work is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, checkout-editor / extensibility exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not an upsell retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or uptime claim.

What it does not buy: more completed checkouts, automatic Plus upgrades, a custom checkout SaaS, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
