Playbook · App proxy metafield missing
Shopify app proxy metafield missing? Prove the subpath, owner, value, and proxied response.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose app proxy returns but a metafield is missing, null, or blank in the response body or Liquid that consumes it. Start with the exact proxy subpath, signature verification, resource owner, namespace.key, definition type, access, saved value, and live response. This is distinct from webhook subscription metafield blank and theme app extension metafield missing: this page assumes a signed app-proxy request reaches your app and isolates missing field data in the proxied reply.

01
A missing proxy metafield is not the same bug as a proxy that never reaches your app.
Use this page when the storefront or theme hits your app proxy URL and you get a response, but the expected metafield is empty, omitted, or unavailable to Liquid or your renderer. If the proxy returns 401/403 from a bad signature, a wrong subpath, or an uninstalled app, fix the proxy path and HMAC first—not the metafield definition.
Capture one request URL, shop domain, proxy subpath, HTTP status, signature pass/fail, the exact field path, and whether the body shows blank, null, empty string, or an absent key. Do not add a duplicate metafield before proving the owner the proxy query loads.
02
Name the exact app proxy subpath, shop, and signature check before editing metafields.
Write down the configured proxy URL prefix and the subpath the theme actually requests. A apps/your-app/proxy path is not the same as a mis-typed theme fetch, an Admin app link, or a Storefront API call. Confirm the request is signed with the shared secret and that your app verifies the signature before reading shop data.
Use one synthetic, reversible test resource. Record its ID, the shop, the proxy subpath, the query params your handler uses to load the owner, and the exact app log line. Keep customer data, credentials, and private tokens out of screenshots and logs.
03
Prove namespace.key, type, access, and saved value on the same owner the proxy loads.
Record the definition namespace and key exactly, including case, type, validations, list/reference shape, owner type, and app ownership. Confirm a saved test value on that same resource persists in Admin or the owning app. A label that looks right, a draft value, or a different product/order/customer is not proof.
Check the app scopes and Admin/Storefront access required to read that owner from your proxy handler. Treat absent, null, empty string, and empty list as separate observations. Do not paste secrets into proxy response notes or theme comments.
04
Compare the live proxy response with the Liquid or theme field path.
Open the live response body (or Liquid-rendered HTML) and compare the field path with what the theme expects. Verify your handler queried the correct owner ID from the proxy params, included the metafield in the JSON or Liquid assignment, and did not strip blank values. A wrong owner ID, stale cache, unsupported type, or theme looking at a different namespace can make a saved value look missing.
Separate input absence from renderer failure: if the proxy JSON is blank for the field, fix owner, definition, access, or query first. If the JSON contains the value but Liquid or the theme drops it, that is a mapping or liquid filter issue—not a missing metafield.
05
Retest one signed proxy request and preserve the proof packet.
Hit one controlled proxy URL on one known-valid resource. Record the subpath, shop, signature result, owner ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, response field state, HTTP status, and theme/Liquid path. Retry only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as proxy path/signature, owner/query, definition/value, access, field path, type parsing, cache, or Liquid mapping. Keep it distinct from a webhook subscription blank field and from a theme app extension that never mounts.
06
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one proxy path, signature, owner, definition, access, response, or Liquid check explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so later app-proxy edits are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops can trace the agreed proxy path in a 72-hour window after collaborator access. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
