Playbook · Webhook subscription metafield blank
Shopify webhook subscription metafield blank? Prove the topic, owner, value, and delivery payload.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose webhook subscription delivers but a metafield is blank, null, or missing in the delivery body or downstream handler. Start with the exact topic, resource owner, namespace.key, definition type, access, saved value, and active subscription. This is distinct from webhooks not firing and webhooks not delivering: this page assumes a delivery exists and isolates missing field data.

01
A blank webhook metafield is not the same bug as a subscription that never delivers.
Use this page when webhook delivery logs show a successful or attempted delivery, but the expected metafield is empty, omitted, or unavailable to your handler. If no deliveries appear for the topic, use webhooks not firing. If deliveries are created but never reach your endpoint, use webhooks not delivering.
Capture one delivery ID, the topic, the endpoint, the exact field path, HTTP status, and whether the body shows blank, null, empty string, or an absent key. Do not add a duplicate metafield before proving the owner.
02
Name the exact webhook topic and resource owner before changing the subscription.
Write down the topic and resource it actually emits: orders/create is not orders/paid, products/update is not variants/update, and inventory topics can expose inventory item, variant, or location data. A product metafield will not appear because the subscription reads an order or inventory owner.
Use one synthetic, reversible test resource. Record its ID, the event timestamp, the shop, the subscription ID, and the exact delivery log entry. Keep customer data, credentials, and private tokens out of screenshots and logs.
03
Prove namespace.key, type, access, and saved value together.
Record the definition namespace and key exactly, including case, type, validations, list/reference shape, owner, and app ownership. Confirm a saved test value on that same resource persists in Admin or the owning app. A label that looks right, a draft value, or a different resource is not proof.
Check the app scopes and webhook subscription filters required to read the owner. Treat absent, null, empty string, and empty list as separate observations. Do not paste secrets into delivery notes.
04
Compare the live delivery body with the active subscription and field path.
Open the delivery details and compare the body field path with the field your handler expects. Verify the subscription is the active one, the app still has the required scopes, and the topic exposes that owner on this event. A stale subscription, wrong owner, wrong field path, or unsupported type can make a saved value look blank.
Separate input absence from handler failure: if the delivery body is blank for the field, fix owner, definition, access, or topic shape first. If the body contains the value but your handler drops it, that is a parsing or mapping issue—not a missing metafield.
05
Retest one controlled delivery and preserve the proof packet.
Trigger one controlled event on one known-valid resource. Record the topic, delivery ID, owner ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, body state, subscription ID, app scopes, HTTP status, and handler input. Retry only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as topic/owner, definition/value, access, field path, type parsing, stale subscription, or handler mapping. Keep it distinct from a subscription that never creates a delivery.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one topic, owner, definition, access, payload, or mapping check explains the blank. Keep the proof packet so later webhook edits are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops can trace the agreed webhook path in a 72-hour window after collaborator access. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
