Playbook · theme app extension metafield missing
Shopify theme app extension metafield missing? Prove the owner, access, block input, and published theme.
Written for a Shopify owner whose theme app extension or app block renders but its metafield is missing or blank on the storefront. Start with the exact block target, resource owner, namespace.key, access scope, theme assignment, input query, and active version. This is distinct from a theme extension that never appears in the editor and from a generic metafield rendering issue.

01
A missing theme app metafield is not automatically a missing extension or a theme-editor bug.
Use this page when the app block or embed mounts but the expected value is empty, null, omitted, or unavailable on the storefront. If the block never appears in Customize, use the theme extension editor path. If the same field is absent in several unrelated surfaces, use the general storefront metafield playbook.
Capture the published theme ID, template, app block target, resource ID, field path, and exact surface where the value should appear before changing the definition or app.
02
Prove the resource owner and exact namespace.key before changing the app block query.
Confirm whether the field belongs to the product, variant, collection, page, article, customer, or another resource exposed by the block. A product value will not appear because a query asks for a variant field. Record one synthetic test resource and its ID.
Copy the exact namespace.key, including case, and verify the block reads that same owner in the live storefront context. Do not create a duplicate definition because its label looks identical.
03
Check definition type, storefront access, saved value, and test data together.
Record the definition type, list or reference shape, app ownership, and storefront access required by the theme or Storefront API path. Save one unmistakable, reversible test value on the exact owner, refresh the published theme, and confirm it persists.
Keep customer data, tokens, and passwords out of screenshots and logs. Treat an absent field, null, empty string, and empty list as separate observations.
04
Compare the deployed app block input, theme assignment, scopes, and active version.
Open the theme app extension input query and verify it selects the same owner and namespace.key. Confirm the app block is assigned to the published theme and intended template, the app has the intended scope, and the active extension version uses that query. A draft query, stale generated schema, wrong target, or inactive version can make a correct value look missing.
Trace input presence separately from rendering. If the field is present in block input but absent in Liquid or React output, that is a rendering or parsing issue—not proof that the metafield is missing.
05
Retest one known-valid resource on the published theme and preserve the proof.
Use one published theme, one template, one resource, one browser session, and one extension version where the block is known to mount. Record theme ID, owner ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, input field state, active version, and rendered output. Hard-refresh only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as owner, definition/value, access, target, query, type parsing, inactive version, or rendering. Keep it separate from an extension that never appears in Customize.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one owner, definition, access, target, query, or active-version check explains the missing field. Keep the proof packet so future theme changes are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, themes, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
