Playbook · Shopify referral / friend invite / loyalty referral email

Shopify referral invite email not sending — after a customer shared Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo (or Klaviyo / Flow) and their friend never got the invite mail.

Written for a Shopify owner whose loyalty or referral program should email a friend invite when someone shares Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, or Rivo (or a Klaviyo Referral / Friend Invite / Advocate flow, or Shopify Flow after a share), and the friend never gets the email — so referral dashboards stay empty, advocates ask “did my invite send?,” and “why didn’t my friend get the code?” tickets that never started with a referral send. This is a loyalty-app / Klaviyo / Flow referral path playbook — not review request, not winback, not failed payment, not gift card, not abandoned checkout, and not customer account invite. DIY tools first. Honest limits. No ticket-cut number, no referral-lift claim, no invented case studies.

01

Referral / friend invite / loyalty referral mail, not review request, winback, failed payment, gift card, abandoned checkout, or customer account invite.

A referral, friend invite, or loyalty referral email is not a post-purchase review ask and not a native Shopify account activate mail. Review request / product review is review request email not sending. Winback / We Miss You is winback email not sending. Failed payment / card declined / dunning is failed payment email not sending. Gift card issue is gift card email not sending. Abandoned checkout is abandoned checkout email not sending. Native Shopify customer account invite / activate account is customer account invite not sending. This page is the customer-facing path when an advocate shared a referral link or entered a friend’s email in Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo — or a Klaviyo Referral / Friend Invite / Advocate flow, or Shopify Flow after a share — and the invite should have emailed.

Six ordinary reasons referral invite mail never lands: no share / friend email / referred-friend event, loyalty app or Klaviyo / Flow Draft or paused, two owners fighting over the same event, sender/spam hid a send that did fire, you tested a different email product, or you never built a referral-invite path. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo and/or Klaviyo / Shopify Flow. You do not need a second SaaS to read their send history.

02

No share, friend email entered, or referred-friend event.

Open Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo → Referrals / Invites (or the loyalty app’s send log) and/or Klaviyo → Profiles. You need a real share or invite event — advocate clicked Share, friend email entered, referral link claimed, or “X days after first purchase invite friends” — not a fulfilled order alone, not a review ask, not a gateway decline, not an unpaid cart, not a lapsed segment match, not a gift-card issue, and not a native Send account invite click. A review ask is review-request mail. Days since last order with no purchase is winback. Native activate-account is customer account invite.

Common traps: referral program requires a completed purchase before share unlocks while you test on a guest; friend email never submitted so nothing queues; timezone so a delayed invite has not elapsed; exclude discounted / wholesale / staff so every test advocate is skipped; profile suppressed / unsubscribed / bounced so they never enter; and testing “refer a friend” copy on a page without the widget live. Wrong event, wrong silence.

Prove it on a test you own: complete a purchase (if required), share to an inbox you control (or enter that inbox as the friend), then read Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo invite logs and Klaviyo flow analytics / Shopify Flow run history. No share / no friend email means fix the trigger definition first — not the reward amount.

03

Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo paused, or Klaviyo / Flow referral path Draft.

Open Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo → Settings → Referrals / Referral emails / Friend invites. The referral program must be On / Enabled, not paused, and invite emails must be enabled for advocate and/or friend. Open Klaviyo → Flows. Find Referral, Friend Invite, Advocate, Refer-a-Friend, or any flow triggered by a loyalty share / referral claimed event. Status must be Live, not Draft or Manual. Filters that skip anyone who already referred, exclude recent purchasers with a too-short window, or require a tag you never set, silently skip every profile. Open Shopify admin → Flow. Find any “referral invite,” “friend invite,” or post-share Send email workflow. Status must be Active, not Draft.

One-off Shopify Email or Klaviyo campaigns titled “invite your friends” are not the automated referral path. Building a campaign does not fire when someone shares. Mixing campaign email with loyalty-app / Klaviyo / Flow automation is how you pay for three products and still send none when a friend should be invited. If Klaviyo flows never send on any trigger, that is the broader Klaviyo flow not sending playbook. If Shopify Flow never runs, see Shopify Flow not running. This page assumes share / invite events exist and asks why the referral-invite path stays quiet.

04

Two owners for the same referral email — loyalty app + Klaviyo + Flow fighting.

Pick one owner for referral / friend-invite emails. If Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo owns it, turn duplicate Klaviyo Referral / Friend Invite flows and Shopify Flow Send email that hit the same share event off. If Klaviyo owns a multi-step advocate series and the loyalty app only tracks points / widgets, document that split so nobody “cleans up” the wrong toggle. Running both is how the friend gets two invites, contradictory codes, or silence after someone disabled the live owner.

The review-request playbook at /review-request-email-not-sending is about post-fulfillment product reviews. This page assumes a share or friend email should have emailed a referral invite and asks why that mail is quiet. Fix ownership first, then templates.

05

Sender / spam / promotions hid a send that did fire.

Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo send logs or Klaviyo / Flow history can show referral invite sent while the friend swears silence. Check the From domain / SPF / DKIM the loyalty app or Klaviyo / Shopify uses, Gmail Promotions vs Primary, and whether the subject looks like pure marketing so filters bury a friend invite. Force one test referral invite to an inbox you control. Search spam for the exact subject the path uses.

If the log says sent and the inbox is empty after spam checks, fix deliverability — do not buy another loyalty app to paper over a domain that already fails DMARC on order confirmation.

06

You tested review request, winback, failed payment, gift card, abandoned checkout, or customer account invite.

A post-purchase review ask is review request. A lapsed-customer / We Miss You ping is winback. A decline / dunning recovery is failed payment. Issuing a gift card is gift card. Leaving a retail cart unpaid is abandoned checkout. Native Shopify activate-account mail is customer account invite.

The only honest test for this page: a real or test share / friend email to an inbox you own, one owner’s referral path Live (Smile / LoyaltyLion / Rivo and/or Klaviyo / Flow), then send log / flow activity + inbox. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: share / friend email event exists, one owner’s referral path Live, sender/spam checked. Force one live test email to an inbox you own. Read the send log. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related troubleshooting: review request not sending, winback not sending, failed payment not sending, gift card not sending, abandoned checkout not sending, customer account invite not sending, Klaviyo flow not sending.

Pay for help when the work is not the loyalty-app toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so every referral share that should email a friend invite is emailed, lead capture is not dying in DMs, and checkout-ready ops paths are one live workflow instead of a paused Smile schedule plus a Draft Klaviyo referral flow you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a Gorgias implementation, not a support VA, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a Shopify Flow / Klaviyo / loyalty-referral path install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops / post-purchase email consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as a ticket-cut number or referral-volume lift.

What it does not buy: more successful referrals, a lift in friend-invite open rate, fewer “did my invite send?” tickets, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
