Playbook · Shopify partial fulfillment / remaining items shipped

Shopify partial fulfillment email not sending — after the rest of the order finally left the warehouse.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner who shipped some line items first, later fulfilled the remaining SKUs, and the buyer never got the second (or later) “your remaining items have shipped” / Shipping confirmation — so support fills with “where is the rest?” threads. This is a native Shopify notification or Shopify Flow playbook — not WISMO, not fulfillment-hold, not preorder shipped, not local pickup ready, not POS receipt, not payment pending, not abandoned checkout, not refund, and not return request. DIY tools first. Honest limits. No ticket-cut number, no recovered-revenue claim, no invented case studies.

01

Partial / remaining-items ship mail, not WISMO, fulfillment-hold, preorder, local pickup, POS, payment pending, abandoned checkout, refund, or return request.

A partial fulfillment / remaining items shipped notification is not WISMO and not a hold notice. WISMO is “where is my order” after purchase — WISMO email not sending. Fulfillment-hold / order-on-hold mail is “we paused your order” — fulfillment hold email not sending. Preorder / coming soon shipped is release of a held preorder SKU — preorder shipped email not sending. Local pickup ready is counter pickup — local pickup ready email not sending. POS receipt is in-store — POS receipt email not sending. Payment pending / authorization failed is payment pending email not sending. Abandoned checkout is unpaid cart — abandoned checkout email not sending. Refund confirmation is refund email not sending. Return request / label is return request email not sending. Ordinary single-fulfill Shipping confirmation silence is shipping confirmation email not sending. This page is the buyer-facing path when an order is Partially fulfilled and a later fulfill should email again: native Shipping confirmation on each fulfill, or a Shopify Flow watching Fulfillment created / Partially fulfilled.

Six ordinary reasons remaining-items ship mail never lands: the remaining lines never got a second fulfillment event, Shipping confirmation is off or Flow only matches fully Fulfilled, Notify customer was unchecked on the later fulfill (or 3PL writeback), sender/spam hid a send that did fire, you tested a different email product, or you never built a path for Fulfillment created. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify notifications. You do not need a second SaaS to read notification history.

02

Remaining lines still Unfulfilled — no second fulfillment event to notify on.

Open Orders → the multi-line test order. Fulfillment status Partially fulfilled with some lines Fulfilled and others still Unfulfilled means Shopify has not created a second fulfillment yet — there is nothing for Shipping confirmation or a “remaining items shipped” Flow to fire on. Creating the later fulfill (tracking optional, Notify customer on) is the event — not “I updated inventory” and not “the warehouse said it left.”

Common traps: warehouse shipped outside Shopify so admin never got a second fulfillment, staff marked the order note “rest shipped” without fulfilling remaining quantities, mixed digital + physical where the digital auto-fulfilled on day one and the physical lines sat Unfulfilled forever, and a 3PL that only writebacks the first carton. Wrong event, wrong silence.

Prove it on a test order you own: fulfill remaining lines with Notify customer on, and read Timeline for the notification plus Settings → Notifications → Shipping confirmation recent activity. No second fulfillment event means fix ops first — not the template.

03

Shipping confirmation off, or Flow only matches fully Fulfilled (skips Partially fulfilled).

Open Settings → Notifications. Confirm Shipping confirmation is enabled — native Shopify can send it on each fulfill when Notify customer is on. Open Shopify admin → Flow. Find any “fulfillment created,” “partially fulfilled,” or “remaining items shipped” workflow. Status must be Active, not Draft. Conditions that only match Fulfillment status = Fulfilled (fully) will silently skip every Partially fulfilled event — the first ship may have mailed from native while your custom Flow never saw the second.

Marketing campaigns titled “Your order is on the way” in Shopify Email or Klaviyo are not the transactional path. Building a campaign does not fire when a specific remaining fulfill lands. Mixing campaign email with notification / Flow actions is how you pay for three products and still send none on the second carton. If Flow never runs on any trigger, that is the broader Shopify Flow not running playbook. This page assumes later fulfill events exist and asks why the remaining-items path stays quiet.

04

Notify customer unchecked on the later fulfill / bulk / 3PL writeback.

On the fulfill drawer for remaining lines, Notify customer of shipment must be checked (or your bulk / API / 3PL integration must send notify_customer: true). Unchecked fulfills update admin and never email. Staff who already emailed on the first carton often uncheck it “so we do not spam” and then wonder why buyers ask where the rest is. Same pattern for bulk fulfill CSV and some 3PL apps whose default notify flag is false on partials.

3PL / writeback: first carton notified, second carton writeback with notify off; dual systems (native + Flow) where one is on and the other silently suppresses duplicates; and “Mark as fulfilled” without the notify checkbox. Read Timeline for the order ID. A fulfill with no “Shipping confirmation sent” line is not “Shopify only emails once” — it is notify off.

05

Sender / spam / promotions hid a send that did fire.

Timeline can show Shipping confirmation sent on the second fulfill while the buyer swears silence. Check the From domain / SPF / DKIM for the store, Gmail Promotions vs Primary, and whether the second subject looks identical to the first (buyers train themselves to ignore a duplicate-looking subject). Force one test remaining-items fulfill to an inbox you control. Search spam for the exact subject your template uses.

If Timeline says sent and the inbox is empty after spam checks, fix deliverability — do not buy another shipping app to paper over a domain that already fails DMARC on order confirmation.

06

You tested WISMO, hold, preorder, pickup, POS, payment pending, abandoned checkout, refund, or return request.

Asking “where is my order” is WISMO. Putting an order On hold is fulfillment hold. Releasing a preorder is preorder shipped. Marking Ready for pickup is local pickup ready. Emailing a POS receipt is POS receipt. Leaving Payment pending is payment pending. Leaving a cart unpaid is abandoned checkout. Refunding is refund. Opening a return is return request. A single full fulfill with no remaining lines is ordinary shipping confirmation.

The only honest test for this page: a real multi-line order, first fulfill done, remaining lines fulfilled with Notify customer on, Shipping confirmation / Flow Active for Fulfillment created or Partially fulfilled, then Timeline + inbox. Anything else is a different product.

07

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: second fulfillment event exists, Shipping confirmation / Flow Active for every fulfill (not only fully Fulfilled), Notify customer on for remaining lines, sender/spam checked. Force one live remaining-items fulfill to an inbox you own. Read Timeline. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related troubleshooting: shipping confirmation not sending, WISMO not sending, fulfillment hold not sending, preorder shipped not sending, Shopify Flow not running, 3PL tracking not writing back.

Pay for help when the work is not the notification toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so every fulfill (first and remaining) notifies the buyer, lead capture is not dying in DMs, and checkout-ready ops paths are one live workflow instead of a draft Flow plus a 3PL notify flag you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a shipping-app rebuild, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a Gorgias implementation, not a support VA, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a Shopify Flow or notification-path install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops / fulfillment consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as a ticket-cut number or recovered shipping trust.

What it does not buy: fewer WISMO tickets, recovered revenue from partial-ship trust, a lift in conversion, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
