Playbook · Shopify POS / retail receipt customer mail

Shopify POS receipt email not sending — after the till already took the money.

Written for a Shopify DTC + retail owner whose buyer paid at the counter on Shopify POS — and the customer email with the POS / retail receipt never arrives. This is a native-notifications playbook for POS receipt and retail receipt mail — not payment pending, not draft order invoice, not gift card, not refund / cancel, not return request, not fulfillment hold, not abandoned checkout, and not WISMO. Native tools first. Honest limits. No ticket-cut number, no recovered-revenue claim, no invented case studies.

01

POS / retail receipt mail, not online order confirmation or payment pending.

A POS receipt email is not online order confirmation and not payment pending. Online order confirmation fires after a web checkout — that playbook is order confirmation email not sending. Payment pending / authorization failed is a payment status on a checkout order — see payment pending email not sending. A draft order invoice is a merchant-sent pay link — draft order invoice not sending. This page is the buyer-facing “here is your receipt for what you just paid at the till” path: native Notifications for POS receipt / retail receipt after a Shopify POS sale.

Also not this page: gift card, refund / cancel, return request / label, fulfillment hold / order on hold, abandoned checkout, WISMO. Six ordinary reasons POS receipt mail never lands: no email on the sale, the template is off, Email receipt was unchecked, print-only was selected, you tested the wrong email, or sender / spam hid a send that did fire. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify. You do not need a second receipt app to read the notification list.

02

No customer email captured at the till (guest / skip email).

POS receipt email needs a destination. Open the order from the POS sale → Customer / Contact. If there is no email, Shopify has nowhere to send the receipt. Guest checkout at the till, “skip for now,” cash buyers who never give an address, and staff who rush past the customer screen all create a paid order with a blank To: line.

Adding an email later on the admin order does not always re-fire the original POS receipt — you may need to resend the receipt from the order, or email a PDF from the order page. Training the till script (“email for the receipt?”) beats buying another receipt product.

Also confirm the sale was actually a Shopify POS / retail channel order, not a web checkout that staff rang up on a laptop. Web checkout uses Order confirmation, not the POS receipt template. Wrong channel, wrong playbook.

03

POS receipt / retail receipt template is off.

Open Settings → Notifications → Customer notifications. Look for POS receipt, retail receipt, or point of sale receipt related templates (wording varies by Shopify plan and POS version). Read the on/off state, not Order confirmation next to them, not Abandoned checkout, not a preview. Disabled does not send. A staffer who turned POS receipt mail off “because we only print” leaves a hole that looks like Shopify is broken when a buyer asks for email.

Order confirmation can be on and POS receipt still off. Gift card, refund, and payment-pending templates are different events again. Do not debug this page on an Order confirmation or Payment pending toggle.

If you use a third-party receipt / loyalty app that “owns” email receipts, native POS receipt may be intentionally off — then the bug is that app’s send log, not Settings → Notifications. Name which product you intended before you flip the wrong switch.

04

Email receipt / Notify customer was unchecked on the POS sale.

The template can be on and still not send. Completing a POS sale often includes Email receipt / Send receipt / Notify customer. Unchecked means no email, even with a live template and a real customer email on the order. Staff who print every ticket and leave email off as default create silent sales all day.

This is the retail trap. Someone rings fifty sales at lunch with Email receipt off, then never notices until a buyer asks for the PDF for expense. A saved POS cart / register setting that remembers the last receipt dialog state will keep email off. Print and email are separate paths — printing does not send the email by itself.

For the next test: complete one POS sale with a real customer email you control, Email receipt / Notify customer on, wait a minute, then read that inbox — not the order timeline alone. The timeline can show “Paid” / “POS sale” without “Receipt email sent to…”.

06

You tested online order confirmation, payment pending, draft invoice, gift card, or refund.

Placing a clean web checkout proves Order confirmation, not POS receipt. Leaving a cart proves Abandoned checkout. Sending a draft order invoice proves the invoice path. Issuing a gift card proves Gift card created. Issuing a refund proves Order refund. A payment that sits Pending proves payment-pending mail. Preview in the notification editor and Send test email prove the template renders. They do not prove a live POS sale fires the POS receipt.

Honest test: ring one sale on Shopify POS (or the retail channel you actually use), with a customer email you own that is not the store’s staff address, Email receipt on, wait. Then search that inbox and spam for the store name. If Order confirmation arrived from a web test and the POS receipt did not from a till test, the bug is POS email / template / notify box — not “Shopify email is down.”

Related wrong-event pages: order confirmation, payment pending, gift card, refund, abandoned checkout.

07

Sender, BCC, and spam hid the send.

Shopify can send and the customer still reports nothing. Open Settings → Notifications and read the sender email. A custom from-address without authenticated DNS (SPF / DKIM for the domain Shopify tells you to add) lands in spam, or is dropped. A shared @shopifyemail.com from-address also gets filtered on some inboxes. BCC to the owner is not proof the customer got it — BCC can arrive while the To: line bounced.

On the order timeline, look for a receipt / notification sent event, not just Paid at POS. If Shopify says it sent, have the customer search spam, promotions, and the exact from-address. If Shopify does not say it sent, go back to customer email / template / Email receipt checkbox — do not buy a deliverability app for a mail that never left.

Do not install a second receipt email app to “make sure it fires.” You will double-email the next customer who was never the bug. Shopify Email (marketing campaigns) and Klaviyo “purchase” flows are also not this native POS receipt template — mixing them is how you pay for two products and still send none, or send three.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: customer email on the POS sale, POS receipt template on, Email receipt checked, not print-only by accident, sender/spam. Force one live POS sale from a phone / till. Read the inbox. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related troubleshooting: order confirmation not sending, payment pending not sending, draft order invoice not sending, gift card email not sending, refund email not sending, fulfillment hold email not sending.

Pay for help when the work is not the notification toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so POS receipt mail is one live path instead of a native template plus a loyalty-app receipt plus a Klaviyo purchase flow you forgot, lead capture is not dying in DMs, and exceptions show up in a channel you already check. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a notification rebuild, not a Klaviyo rebuild, not a Gorgias implementation, not a support VA, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a Shopify Flow or recovery-app install typically runs $500–$2,500. A Klaviyo-only rebuild typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as a ticket-cut number or recovered checkout revenue.

What it does not buy: fewer WISMO tickets, recovered checkout revenue, a lift in conversion, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.

Checkout is on Whop. Operator is Nico. United States offer. You can revoke collaborator access after handoff. We do not take owner passwords.
