Playbook · Shop Pay Installments API metafield missing

Shopify Shop Pay Installments API metafield missing? Prove the owner, GraphQL selection, scopes, and one consumer.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Installments-related metafield never appears in Admin GraphQL or an authorized app API read, even when eligibility messaging or checkout depends on it. Start with the resource owner, namespace.key, access scopes, and one Market/price-band product. This is not a blank Admin value that exists but is empty, and it is not Installments missing as a payment option at checkout.

01

A missing API metafield is not the same bug as a blank Admin value or Installments missing.

Use this page when the metafield node itself is absent from GraphQL / REST / app reads: the connection returns no matching namespace.key, the identifier is null, or the app never receives the field. If Admin shows the key but the value is empty, use the Shop Pay Installments metafield blank playbook. If Affirm-style Installments never appears as a payment option, use Shop Pay Installments missing.

Do not recreate definitions until you prove the query selects the intended owner and that the app has metafields read access for that namespace.

02

Name the exact owner, shop, Market, and product context before changing queries.

Write down whether the definition lives on product, variant, shop, market, or another owner. Confirm the shop domain, Market, currency, and the product price band Installments expects. A populated product field on the wrong Market or a variant-only definition queried on the product is a common false miss.

Record the product handle, variant SKU, Market ID, and whether Translate & Adapt has a separate locale copy. Save a short test value only after the owner is confirmed.

03

Prove namespace.key, scopes, access, and the GraphQL selection set together.

Compare the metafield definition with the Admin GraphQL product (or variant) query: metafields(identifiers: ...) or metafield(namespace, key). The selection must use the same owner GID and exact namespace.key casing. Missing read_products / metafields access, or an app that only requests storefront metafields, will look like the field was never created.

Verify the definition's Admin and Storefront access flags, app ownership, and whether the query runs against a different API version than the consumer. Log field presence without logging secrets or payment tokens.

04

Compare the authorized API response with the live Installments-related consumer.

Open the authorized Admin API response for the same owner and key. Then compare with what the app, theme block, or checkout-adjacent surface expects. A stale cache, unsupported type, or filter that drops null identifiers can hide a field that Admin Custom data still lists.

Keep this path distinct from the B2B catalog metafield blank playbook — company catalogs and Installments API reads share checkout urgency but different owners.

05

Retest one product query and keep a small proof packet.

Use one product in the intended Installments price band. Record the product/variant ID, Market, namespace.key, type, scopes, GraphQL selection, API field presence, and whether the consumer receives the node. Repeat after a short cache wait if the app caches metafields, then test a second product only after the first path is proven.

If the field is still missing, classify it as wrong owner, missing definition, scope/access, wrong selection, API version mismatch, or consumer filter. Do not call checkout eligibility until the API metafield node is demonstrably present.

06

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when one owner correction, scope grant, or GraphQL selection fix explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so future Installments app updates are reversible.

Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, Installments-related apps, metafield APIs, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
