Playbook · Shop Minis metafield missing

Shopify Shop Minis metafield missing? Prove the product owner, value, Mini config, and one live Shop surface.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Shop Minis metafield exists in Admin but is missing from a Mini config, Mini preview, or live Shop App surface. Start with the product owner, exact namespace.key, saved value, and one Mini. This is not Shop channel products failing to sync, and it is not a classic Online Store theme metafield blank.

01

A missing Mini metafield is not automatically a Shop channel sync failure.

Use this page when the value itself is missing from Shop Minis: Admin has no value, the Mini cannot select the metafield, or the live Mini never shows the field you expect. If products themselves are missing from Shop, use Shop channel products not syncing. If Online Store Liquid metafields are blank while Shop is fine, use product metafields not showing.

Do not add a second metafield or rebuild the Mini yet. Capture the shop, product IDs, Mini name/version, market, and exact Shop App surface where the metafield should appear.

02

Prove the product resource, definition, and exact saved value.

Open Settings → Custom data and confirm the definition is owned by Product (or the resource the Mini docs require). Record the exact namespace and key, for example shop.mini_badge, the type, validations, and whether storefront / Storefront API access is enabled.

Open the exact products the Mini should feature. Save a short unmistakable test value, refresh, and confirm it survives in Admin. A filled definition on unpublished products, a different namespace, or a label that only looks right is not proof the Mini can read it.

03

Check access, type, namespace.key, and the Mini config together.

Compare the saved definition with the Shop Mini configuration that references metafields. The Mini must select the same namespace.key and a supported type. A successful Admin save can still omit the field from Minis when storefront access is off, the type is unsupported in that Mini SDK version, or the Mini is pinned to an older build.

Verify the products are published to the Shop channel and that the Mini is installed/updated. Log field presence without logging secrets. If a plain text test is visible in Admin but never selectable in the Mini editor, fix definition access/type rather than rewriting the Mini UI.

04

Trace one Mini, market, and Shop App surface path.

Shop Minis behavior is context-sensitive. Record the Mini ID/name, market, currency, Shop channel publication, and whether products with the test value are available in Shop. Confirm you are not testing a classic theme storefront while diagnosing a Shop App-only Mini surface.

Keep the diagnosis distinct from Storefront API metafield blank and Shop Pay Installments metafield blank. They can affect related Shop surfaces while reading different resources and fields.

05

Retest one Mini surface and keep a small proof packet.

Use one product set and one Mini. Record product IDs, namespace.key, type, saved test value, Mini version, Shop publication status, and whether the live Mini shows the expected output. Repeat in Shop preview or a test device, then test a second Mini only after the first path is proven.

If the field is still missing, classify it as definition/value, storefront access, unsupported type, Mini config, unpublished Shop products, market/catalog, or Mini version. Do not call a Shop channel sync failure until the metafield values are demonstrably present and selectable in the Mini.

06

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when one definition, saved value, Mini config, or Shop publication check explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so future Mini changes are reversible.

Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, catalogs, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
