Playbook · Functions metafield blank
Shopify Functions metafield blank? Prove the owner, input query, and active version.
Written for a Shopify owner whose discount, cart transform, delivery, payment, or other Function mounts but the metafield it needs is blank. Start with the input owner, namespace.key, access, and what the Function input query actually selects—not with a full WASM rebuild. This is distinct from validation Function metafield blank, cart transform metafield missing, Functions discount not applying, and Shopify Functions WASM failing.

01
A blank Function metafield is not the same bug as WASM crash or discount miss.
Use this page when the Function deploys and runs, but the metafield field in the Function input is null, empty, or never selected. If the WASM binary fails to load, use Functions WASM failing. If the discount Function runs with data but never applies, use Functions discount not applying. Validation-specific blank fields belong on validation Function metafield blank.
Capture Function handle, API type, input owner, namespace.key, and the exact place the Function should consume the value before changing the app or re-uploading WASM.
02
Prove the Function input owner and exact namespace.key.
Confirm whether the field belongs to cart, cart line, product, variant, customer, company, shop, or another owner the Function input query documents. A shop metafield will not appear because the Function selects a line-level key. Record one synthetic test resource and its ID.
Copy the exact namespace.key, including case. Do not create a duplicate definition because its label looks identical in Admin Custom data. Distinct from cart transform metafield missing when you are debugging a different Function API type.
03
Check type, access, and a saved reversible test value.
Record the definition type, list or reference shape, and whether Admin / Apps access is enabled for the surfaces Functions use. Save one unmistakable, reversible test value on the exact owner, refresh Admin, and confirm it persists. If Admin itself has no value, the Function will correctly see blank.
Keep customer data, tokens, and passwords out of screenshots. Treat an absent field, null, empty string, and empty list as separate observations.
04
Inspect the input query and active Function version separately from theme Liquid.
Open the Function's input query (or app TOML) and confirm which namespace.key it selects. Separate: query never selects the field, query selects a different owner, type mismatch, stale deployed version, or Function not activated on the target discount / checkout / delivery customization.
Functions read metafields through the input query—not theme Liquid. A correct Online Store storefront value with the wrong owner or an outdated active version will look like a blank Function field even when the theme shows the metafield.
05
Retest one Function run and preserve the proof.
Use one cart or checkout, one Function handle, and one known owner. Record owner ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, access flags, input query snippet, active version ID, and a screenshot of Function run / Partner Dashboard logs. Hard-refresh only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as owner, definition/value, access, input query, stale version, or WASM/discount instead. Keep it separate from Scripts-to-Functions migration leftovers and combinesWith stacking.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one owner, access, input-query, or active-version check explains the blank field. Keep the proof packet so future Function or app changes are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
