Playbook · Cart Transform metafield missing
Shopify Cart Transform metafield missing? Prove the owner, value, input, and cart path.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Cart Transform metafield or custom field exists in Admin or an app but is blank in the Function input, bundle expansion, line merge, or live cart. Start with the owner, exact namespace.key, saved value, and one active Function version. This is not a general Cart Transform Function that is present but fails to merge or expand lines.

01
A missing Cart Transform field is not automatically a broken transform.
Use this page when the value itself is missing: a definition is empty, an app shows blank data, or the Function input omits a field you expected. If the value is present and the Function still leaves lines unchanged, use the Cart Transform behavior playbook instead.
Do not add a second metafield or bundle app yet. Capture the shop, cart, product or variant, line attributes, bundle ID, and exact surface where the value should appear.
02
Prove the resource that owns the value before changing the query.
Decide whether the implementation reads shop, cart, product, variant, or cart-line data. A product metafield will not appear because a query asks for a cart field; a line attribute is not the same thing as a product definition. Record the resource ID and the live product or bundle used in the test.
Save one unmistakable test value on the exact active resource, refresh, and confirm it persists. A filled definition, a draft product, or a label that only looks right is not proof that the Function can read it.
03
Check namespace.key, type, access, and the saved value together.
Record the exact namespace and key, type, validations, and whether the field is plain text, number, JSON, list, or reference. Compare those facts with what the Cart Transform code expects. A successful Admin request can still return an empty field when the owner or type is wrong.
Check app access and storefront visibility where relevant, but do not expose customer data or secrets in logs. Keep the test value synthetic and reversible.
04
Compare the Function input query, deployed version, and active selection.
Open the Cart Transform input query and verify it selects the same namespace.key on the same owner. Confirm the deployed Function version is Active and the app is installed and selected on the live shop. A draft query, stale generated schema, or an unselected transform can make a correct Admin value look missing.
Keep this diagnosis distinct from Cart Transform behavior, bundle-builder UI, and discount Function behavior. Those paths can touch the same cart while reading different fields.
05
Retest one bundle and keep a small proof packet.
Use one product, one bundle configuration, and one guest cart. Record the resource ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, Function version, input field presence, output operation, and final line count. Repeat after a hard refresh only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as owner, definition/value, access, query, inactive version, or type parsing. Do not call a merge or expansion failure until the input value is demonstrably present.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one owner, definition, query, or active-version check explains the missing field. Keep the proof packet so future bundle changes are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, markets, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
