Playbook · Fulfillment Constraint metafield blank
Shopify Fulfillment Constraint metafield blank? Prove the owner, value, input, and delivery path.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Fulfillment Constraint metafield exists in Admin or an app but is blank in the Function input or absent from delivery selection. Start with the location or delivery owner, exact namespace.key, saved value, and one active version. This is not a rule that is already populated but blocks or rejects fulfillment.

01
A blank constraint field is not automatically a blocking rule.
Use this page when the value itself is missing: a definition is empty, an app shows blank data, or the Function input omits a field you expected. If the value is present and the active rule rejects a valid order, use a fulfillment-rule or hold playbook instead.
Do not create a second metafield or change carrier logic yet. Capture the shop, location, order, delivery group, exact surface where the value should appear, and the test delivery option.
02
Prove the resource that owns the constraint before changing the query.
Decide whether the implementation reads a fulfillment location, order, delivery group, cart, product, or line. A location metafield will not appear because a query asks for an order field; a product definition is not proof that the delivery owner has a value. Record the resource ID and the live order used in the test.
Save one unmistakable synthetic test value on the exact active resource, refresh, and confirm it persists. A filled draft definition or a label that only looks right is not proof that the Function can read it.
03
Check namespace.key, type, access, and the saved value together.
Record the exact namespace and key, type, validations, and whether the field is text, number, JSON, list, or reference. Compare those facts with what the fulfillment implementation expects. A successful Admin request can still return an empty field when the owner or type is wrong.
Check app access and delivery visibility where relevant, but never put customer data, API tokens, or owner passwords in logs. Keep the test value synthetic and reversible.
04
Compare the Function input, deployed version, and active selection.
Open the Fulfillment Constraint input query and verify it selects the same namespace.key on the same owner. Confirm the deployed version is Active, the app is installed, and the delivery customization is selected on the live shop. A draft query, stale generated schema, or unselected version can make a correct Admin value look blank.
Keep this diagnosis distinct from a fulfillment hold or a rule that blocks an order after the constraint has already arrived. Those paths can touch the same order while reading different fields.
05
Retest one order and keep a small proof packet.
Use one location, one order, one delivery group, and one guest checkout. Record the resource ID, namespace.key, type, saved test value, Function version, input field presence, constraint output, and final delivery options. Repeat only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as owner, definition/value, access, query, inactive version, or type parsing. Do not call a rule-blocking failure until the input value is demonstrably present.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one owner, definition, query, or active-version check explains the blank field. Keep the proof packet so future locations and delivery changes are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, locations, apps, markets, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
