Playbook · Customer Account API orders metafield missing

Shopify Customer Account API orders metafield missing? Prove Order ownership, the order query, and one account order page.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose order metafield on Customer Account API is blank on order history or order status while customer-owned fields or Admin order metafields look fine. Start with Order-owned definition, order GID, Customer Account API selection, and one signed-in order surface—not with a full account app reinstall. This is distinct from Customer Account API metafield missing (customer owner) and from customer account UI extension metafield blank.

01

An order metafield miss is not a customer metafield miss.

Use this page when the expected field lives on Order and should appear on Customer Account order index or order status, but the Customer Account API returns null or omits it. If the definition is Customer-owned, use Customer Account API metafield missing. If Admin will not persist the order value, fix Admin save first.

Capture shop, customer ID, order name/GID, account type (new vs classic), extension target, and the exact account URL before changing scopes.

02

Prove Order definition, the exact order, and a saved test value.

Open Settings → Custom data and confirm the definition owner is Order. Record namespace.key and type. Open the exact order the signed-in customer will see, save a short unmistakable test value, refresh, and confirm it survives in Admin.

A value on a different order, a draft order never completed, or a line-item property mistaken for an order metafield is not proof. Soft-link customer account UI extensions metafield missing when the extension catalog itself is the gap.

03

Check Customer Account API order selection and access together.

With the authenticated customer session, select the order node and metafield(namespace: "…", key: "…") (or metafields) on that order. Confirm Customer Account API scopes and any protected customer data approvals that gate order fields.

Admin GraphQL success does not guarantee Customer Account API exposure. Classify omitted selection, null value, access denial, or wrong order GID. Log field presence without logging PII or tokens.

04

Trace one order index or order status extension path.

Record whether the blank appears on order list, order status, or a custom Customer Account UI extension target. Confirm the published extension version and that the buyer is on new customer accounts if that is the surface under test.

Keep this distinct from customer accounts login broken and from classic Liquid account templates. Session and surface mistakes look like missing metafields.

05

Retest one order and keep a small proof packet.

Use one customer and one order. Record order GID, namespace.key, Admin value, Customer Account API JSON, extension target/version, and live account output. Sign out/in only after the first trace is captured.

Classify the miss as wrong owner (Customer vs Order), definition/value, API access/selection, unpublished extension, or wrong target. Do not reinstall the account app until the API value is demonstrably present.

06

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when one Order definition, order query, or published-extension check explains the miss. Keep the proof packet so future account changes stay reversible.

Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, account extensions, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops can connect the agreed workflow in a 72-hour window after collaborator access. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
