Playbook · Shopify collection banner not loading

The Shopify collection banner is blank, missing, or wrong.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose collection hero or banner never appears on the live storefront — the section is absent, blank, cropped incorrectly, or showing an old asset. DIY-first: hold one collection constant, find the published template and asset owner, repair the live path, and retest. This is not a product-media zoom bug, CDN-wide image failure, collection rules problem, or featured-collection widget. No earnings claims.

01

First, name the missing surface.

This page is for a collection hero, collection banner, or merchandising masthead that should sit above the product grid but is blank, absent, showing a stale image, or rendering with the wrong crop. A product image that will not zoom belongs in product image zoom; a whole-store CDN failure belongs in CDN images broken.

Open one published collection directly, not only the theme editor preview. Note the handle, market, device, collection template, heading, banner position, and whether the product grid itself loads. That separates a missing section from a missing asset or a collection that has no products.

02

Prove the published template, not just the draft.

In Online Store → Themes, open the published theme and the exact collection template assigned to the handle. Confirm the banner or image-with-text section is present, enabled, and above the product grid. Check that the collection is not using a different alternate template, a duplicate draft theme, or an app block that is only enabled in preview.

  • Section chrome missing means wrong template, disabled section, or a publish mismatch.
  • Section chrome visible but blank means trace its image, metafield, or app source.
  • Desktop visible but phone blank usually means breakpoint visibility, crop, or lazy-load behavior.
  • One collection stale while others work usually means handle-level template or data, not a global CDN outage.

03

Trace the banner asset and its visibility rules.

Check the section’s image picker, collection image, metafield namespace and key, and any app block source. In the live browser, inspect the rendered image URL and Network response. A 200 response with no painted pixels points to CSS, opacity, height, object-position, or an overlay; a 404 points to a stale or deleted asset; no request points to lazy-load, breakpoint, consent, or JavaScript logic.

Keep the image useful and honest: set accessible alt text, reserve its aspect ratio, choose a mobile crop deliberately, and avoid text baked into an image when the heading can be real HTML. Check Markets and locale conditions so the banner is not filtered out for the visitor’s country.

04

Repair the live path, then retest.

Populate the intended asset source, remove a stale metafield reference, restore the section on the published template, and fix the smallest CSS or app conflict that explains the evidence. Do not publish a broad theme rewrite just to make one banner appear. Disable duplicate merchandising or hero blocks one at a time, clear the relevant cache, and publish only after the live collection shows the intended result.

Retest the same handle on desktop and phone, in a clean browser, before and after consent, and in a second Market. Confirm heading, image request, crop, alt text, lazy-load completion, product grid, and canonical URL. Save the before/after evidence so the next theme or app update can be diagnosed without guessing.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if this is one collection template and one asset: prove the published section, fix the source, publish, and retest. No agency required. The goal is a reliable storefront surface, not a conversion or revenue guarantee.

Pay $997 one-time when the work is wiring the live Shopify stack you already use: lead capture, ops alerts, and a checkout-ready workflow. Nico at Latch AI Ops installs it on one live store in 72 hours after collaborator access is in. You are buying the install, not more orders, a delivery guarantee, or an earnings claim.
