Playbook · Checkout Branding API metafield blank
Shopify Checkout Branding API metafield blank? Prove the profile, payload, and Admin value.
Written for a Shopify Plus owner whose Checkout Branding API / GraphQL branding call returns a metafield as blank, null, or empty even when branding chrome otherwise mounts. Start with checkoutProfileId, owner, namespace.key, and the raw API payload—not with a full checkout rebuild. This is distinct from Checkout Branding metafield missing (definition/value absent in Admin) and from Checkout Branding API not applying (branding never mounts).

A blank Branding API field is not the same bug as a missing definition or branding that never applies.
Use this page when Checkout Branding API / checkout branding GraphQL returns the metafield node as blank, null, empty string, or empty list while branding otherwise loads. If Admin Custom data has no definition or no saved value, use the metafield missing playbook. If branding chrome never applies after Checkout Extensibility, use API not applying first.
Capture Plus plan, published vs draft checkout profile, checkoutProfileId, owner ID, namespace.key, Admin value, and the exact Branding API response field before changing the app or editor.
02
Prove checkoutProfileId, owner, and exact namespace.key the API expects.
Confirm whether the Branding API call targets the published checkout profile buyers hit, or a draft profile you are editing. A correct metafield on the wrong profile looks blank in production. Record the profile ID, market/company context if any, and the owner the branding app documents (shop, market, company, or related).
Copy the exact namespace.key, including case. Do not create a duplicate definition because its Admin label looks identical. A shop key will not appear because the API reads a market-level key.
03
Compare the Admin saved value with the Branding API payload.
Save one unmistakable, reversible test value on the exact owner in Admin. Refresh Admin and confirm it persists. Then call checkout branding GraphQL / Branding API for that checkoutProfileId and record whether the metafield is absent, null, empty, type-mismatched, or present under a different alias.
Separate: Admin blank + API blank (definition/value), Admin present + API blank (query, access, wrong profile, wrong owner), API present + live branding blank (parse / branding apply). Keep tokens and customer data out of screenshots.
04
Check type, checkout access, and app scopes separately from theme Liquid.
Record definition type, list/reference shape, and Checkout / Storefront / Admin access flags the branding surface needs. Confirm the app or Partner Dashboard call has the intended scopes and is not reading theme Liquid for a checkout branding token.
Checkout Branding API often reads shop or market metafields through the app—not Online Store dynamic sources. Storefront access off with Checkout access on (or the reverse) can make the API look blank while the theme shows the field.
05
Retest one Plus checkout profile and preserve the proof.
Use one published profile, one branding surface, and one known owner. Record profile ID, owner ID, namespace.key, type, Admin value, API payload excerpt, access flags, and a screenshot of live checkout chrome. Hard-refresh only after the first trace is captured.
Classify the miss as profile, owner, definition/value, access, API query, type mismatch, or branding parse. Keep it separate from checkout UI extensions, thank-you customization, and checkout editor locked.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one profile, owner, access, or API-payload check explains the blank field. Keep the proof packet so future Checkout Extensibility or branding app changes are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
