Playbook · Storefront API version metafield missing
Shopify Storefront API version metafield missing? Prove the version header, selection, and access.
Written for a Shopify owner whose metafield disappears after a Storefront API version bump (URL path, SDK default, or Hydrogen React package pin) while Admin still shows a value. Start with the API version, query selection, namespace.key, and raw response—not with a full theme rewrite. This is distinct from a plain Storefront API metafield blank, from Storefront API throttle, and from Hydrogen React metafield blank.

01
A version-driven miss is not the same bug as a blank field on a stable API version.
Use this page when the metafield worked on a prior Storefront API version (for example 2024-10) and returns null, omitted, or a schema error after moving to a newer version—while HTTP status is still 200. If the field was always blank on the current version, use the Storefront API metafield blank playbook. If you are hitting cost limits or 429s, use Storefront API throttle.
Capture previous version, current version, query (or persisted query ID), owner GID, namespace.key, and one response fragment from each version before changing tokens or Hydrogen packages.
02
Prove the Storefront API version header and the client package that sets it.
Record the version in the GraphQL endpoint path (/api/YYYY-MM/graphql.json), any X-Shopify-Storefront-API-Version style config, and the hydrogen / hydrogen-react / custom client package version that may pin a default. Mismatched pins between server and browser clients are a common regression source.
Do not assume “latest” is safe. Stable shop code should pin an explicit supported version and upgrade with a side-by-side query check.
03
Prove the owner and exact namespace.key still resolve on the new version.
Confirm the selection path still matches the resource—product, variant, collection, shop, or customer (where eligible). Schema renames, deprecated metafield accessors, or required type arguments can make a previously valid selection look missing on the new version.
Copy the exact namespace and key, including case. Run the same identifiers on the old and new version against one synthetic owner GID with a known Admin value.
04
Check storefront access, type, and a known saved value before blaming the version alone.
In Admin Custom data, confirm the definition still has Storefront access enabled and that a reversible test value exists on the same owner. If Admin has no value or access is off, every API version will correctly return null.
Confirm the Storefront API token can read that resource on both versions. Keep tokens out of screenshots and client bundles beyond what Shopify already exposes publicly.
05
Retest one narrow query on old vs new version and preserve the proof.
Run one identifier query that selects only the synthetic owner and the target metafield on both API versions. Record query text, owner GID, Admin value, storefront access, raw JSON from each version, and client render. Pin or roll back the version only after that packet exists.
Classify the miss as version/schema, owner, definition/value, storefront access, query selection, response null, or client parse. Keep it separate from throttle, Hydrogen React blank render, and theme metafield display.
06
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one version pin, selection, access, or parse check explains the missing field. Keep the proof packet so future Storefront API upgrades are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, headless apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store.
