Playbook · Shopify slideshow not advancing

The slideshow is stuck, skipping, or will not advance.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose slideshow stops on one slide or ignores its controls on the live storefront. Hold one URL and one published theme constant: prove the slide data, controls, timing, JavaScript, overlays, and breakpoint behavior before changing code. This is not a whole-page blank and not a video-section failure. No earnings claims.

01

First, name the missing behavior.

This page is for a slideshow: multiple slides with arrows, dots, swipe, or timed autoplay. Separate the symptom: arrows do nothing, dots select the wrong slide, autoplay never starts, autoplay pauses after one transition, or desktop works while mobile does not. A blank section belongs in the Collage section playbook; a video poster that never plays is a different path.

Record the exact URL, template suffix, expected slide count, active slide, interval, device, browser, Market, theme name, and whether the controls are visible. One URL failing points to template or data; every URL failing points to shared theme JavaScript, CSS, or an app conflict.

02

Prove the published theme and slide data, not only preview.

Open Online Store → Themes and inspect the published theme and exact template assigned to the live URL. Confirm the slideshow section exists, is enabled, appears in the intended order, and has the expected slides, images, headings, links, and visibility conditions. Theme preview can use a draft theme or preview parameters that buyers never receive.

  • Count the rendered slides and compare them with the editor.
  • Check that the active slide has a valid image or content source and a stable ID.
  • Check autoplay interval, pause-on-hover, reduced-motion, and per-slide visibility settings.
  • Test whether a Market, template, or customer-logged-in condition removes every slide after the first.

03

Trace controls, autoplay, and browser gates in that order.

Use a clean browser and inspect the live DOM. Confirm arrows and dots are real buttons or links, are not covered by an overlay, and have the expected accessible labels. Check the console for a theme or app exception before touching markup. Verify the slider initialization runs once, the active index changes, transforms or classes update, and the timer is not cleared by a rerender.

Check CSS for pointer-events, z-index, overflow, width, and hidden controls. Check JavaScript for duplicate libraries, stale selectors, a missing section ID, a timer that is paused by reduced-motion or visibility state, and an app script that rebinds the same event. Test keyboard arrows, swipe, desktop, phone, consent state, and a second slide—not just a screenshot of the first.

04

Repair the smallest live path, then retest edge cases.

Restore the slideshow on the correct published template, correct the confirmed setting or data reference, and remove only the CSS, event, or app conflict that evidence identifies. Preserve headings, alt text, link targets, keyboard focus, pause controls, and a usable reduced-motion experience. Do not replace the entire section or autoplay aggressively to hide a broken control.

Retest every slide on desktop and phone, in a clean browser, after consent, and in a second Market. Confirm arrows, dots, swipe, pause/resume, timing, image requests, alt text, heading order, links, contrast, canonical URL, and neighboring sections. Publish the smallest change and save before/after evidence.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if one slideshow needs one controlled template, setting, selector, or event repair. Prove the live path, fix the smallest gate, publish, and retest. No agency is required and no conversion or revenue guarantee is implied.

Pay $997 one-time when the work is wiring the live Shopify stack you already use: lead capture, ops alerts, and a checkout-ready workflow. Nico at Latch AI Ops installs it on one live store in 72 hours after collaborator access is in. You are buying the install, not more orders or an earnings claim.
