Playbook · Shopify product option limit

Product options hit Shopify's limit.

Written for a Shopify owner who cannot add another product option or variant because Admin hits the 3 options / ~100 variants ceiling — Add option greyed, Save rejected, option values refuse to add, or the variant matrix will not expand — or you chased a broken storefront variant picker, Combined Listings, or line item properties instead. DIY-first: prove counts → exact error → collapse / Combined Listings / apps / SKU redesign → retest. Distinct from variant picker broken (storefront selectors — not Admin option ceiling), Combined Listings not working, and line item properties missing. Soft-link color swatches not showing when theme option UI is the real issue, and variant inventory policy wrong when stock/deny rules are the real issue. No earnings claims, no invented case studies.

01

Admin option/variant limit — not picker broken, Combined Listings, or line-item properties.

Several “options” bugs look alike. They do not share a fix. This page is only when Admin will not accept another option name or more variants on a product because Shopify's product model caps classic products at three option names and about one hundred variants. Storefront size/color selectors that do not update price or media is shopify-variant-picker-broken. Parent-child Combined Listings catalogs are shopify-combined-listings-not-working. Custom engraving / gift message fields via properties[] are shopify-line-item-properties-missing.

Soft links when the bug is adjacent: color swatches missing is shopify-color-swatches-not-showing. Variant inventory deny/continue wrong is shopify-variant-inventory-policy-wrong. This playbook stays on Products → product → Options / Variants → hit 3-option or ~100-variant ceiling → Save / Add option fails.

02

Prove option count, variant count, and the exact Save error.

Open Products → the product → Variants. Count option names (Color, Size, Material…). Count how many variants exist after the cartesian product of option values. Copy the exact Admin error when you try Add option or Save. If you already have three option names, a fourth name is the hard ceiling — not a theme bug.

Soft-check you are not editing a Combined Listings child that inherits options from a parent. Soft-check apps that inject extra options (infinite options, product options apps) are not fighting the native Options UI. Soft-check bulk CSV / Admin API imports that silently drop option values when the matrix would exceed the limit.

If option names exist and Save works but the storefront picker is dead, switch to shopify-variant-picker-broken. If you need parent-child catalogs beyond three options, read shopify-combined-listings-not-working and Shopify's Combined Listings eligibility — that is a different product path, not “just add option four.”

03

Repair via collapse, Combined Listings, apps, or SKU redesign — then retest.

Collapse two dimensions into one option with joined values (e.g. Size+Fit as one option) when shoppers can still choose clearly. Use Combined Listings for eligible parent-child catalogs instead of forcing a fourth native option. Move free-text / personalization into line item properties or a dedicated options app so they do not consume option slots. Split into separate products when the matrix is genuinely too large — honest catalog design beats fighting the platform ceiling.

Honest retest: Add option / Save succeeds within the three-option and ~100-variant limits → storefront picker still maps price and media → inventory policies still make sense. If Save of options works but selectors on the PDP do not update, switch to shopify-variant-picker-broken. If custom text fields never reach the order, use shopify-line-item-properties-missing.

04

You tested variant picker, Combined Listings, or line-item properties instead.

Variant picker broken is shopify-variant-picker-broken. Combined Listings not working is shopify-combined-listings-not-working. Line item properties missing is shopify-line-item-properties-missing. Color swatches not showing is shopify-color-swatches-not-showing. Variant inventory policy wrong is shopify-variant-inventory-policy-wrong.

The only honest test for this page: Products → product → Options / Variants → you can (or cannot) add a fourth option name or expand past the variant ceiling, with the exact Admin error captured. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: prove option and variant counts, separate Admin ceiling from picker JS, decide collapse vs Combined Listings vs split products, retest Save and storefront. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: variant picker broken, Combined Listings not working, line item properties missing.

Pay for help when the work is not the Options screen itself — it is connecting the stack you already have so catalog / option / variant / Combined Listings exceptions land in a channel you already check, and the live store is one workflow instead of a spreadsheet plus a Slack bot you forgot. That is the Latch AI Ops install.

What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a theme rebuild retainer, not a conversion guarantee, not a brand or theme job.

Other shops' public ranges, not testimonials: a checkout / ops install typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or conversion-lift claim.

What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, a forever option-limit guarantee, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
