Playbook · POS channel metafield missing
Shopify POS channel metafield missing? Prove channel, owner, definition, and POS consumer.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Point of Sale channel metafield is missing — no definition or key on the expected owner for POS publication, apps, or receipts. Start with POS channel publication, location, exact owner, whether Custom data shows the definition, namespace.key, access, and the live POS consumer. This is distinct from POS UI extension metafield missing and POS inventory not syncing: this page isolates a missing channel-scoped metafield/definition from extension surfaces and stock sync. DIY first. No earnings claims.

A missing POS channel metafield is not the same bug as a POS UI extension blank or inventory drift.
Use this page when the metafield key or definition expected for Point of Sale channel data is absent entirely (missing definition, wrong owner, or never attached to the POS-published resource). If a POS UI extension metafield key is missing on the extension surface, start with POS UI extension metafield missing. If stock counts diverge between POS and admin, use POS inventory not syncing.
Capture one product or location ID, POS channel publication state, metafield namespace.key, whether Custom data shows a definition, Admin API presence/absence, and the POS consumer (app tile, receipt, staff screen). Do not create a duplicate definition before proving the intended owner and channel.
02
Name the POS channel, publication, location, and owner before creating fields.
Write down that Point of Sale is a sales channel with its own publication and location context. Confirm the product or resource is published to POS, the location the device uses, and whether your field is meant for product, variant, location, or shop. A storefront-only metafield will not appear for POS channel consumers.
Use one synthetic, reversible test product at one location. Record channel publication, location ID, device/app version if relevant, and keep staff credentials and customer PII out of screenshots.
03
Prove whether the definition exists and is scoped to the right owner.
Open Settings → Custom data and confirm a definition exists for the intended owner with the exact namespace.key. If there is no definition, the field is missing—not blank. If a definition exists but Admin shows empty, you may need a blank playbook instead; this page focuses on absent key/definition for POS channel use.
Check app ownership, access, and whether the definition is locked or limited to another channel. Creating a look-alike namespace on the wrong owner does not fix a missing POS channel field.
04
Compare Admin or API presence with the POS app or receipt consumer.
Query the owner via Admin API for the exact namespace.key. Absent key means missing definition or wrong owner; present key with empty value is a different failure. Then open the POS consumer and confirm it requests the same owner and key.
Separate missing definition from unpublished channel: if the product is not published to POS, the channel consumer may never load the resource. If the definition is missing, create or restore the supported definition path before blaming the POS app cache.
05
Retest one location and preserve the proof packet.
Publish one test product to POS at one location, attach or confirm the definition, write a reversible non-sensitive value if appropriate, and open the POS consumer. Record channel publication, location, owner ID, namespace.key, definition present/absent, API result, and POS UI state.
Classify the miss as unpublished channel, wrong owner, missing definition, access, app query, or cache. Keep it distinct from POS UI extension metafield missing and POS inventory not syncing.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY when one owner, definition, access, channel, or consumer check explains the blank or missing field. Keep the proof packet so later edits are reversible.
Pay for the $997 one-time install when several Shopify surfaces, apps, and ops alerts need to be wired and documented on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops can trace the agreed path in a 72-hour window after collaborator access. No earnings claim, conversion guarantee, or theme rebuild is included; owner passwords are not requested.
