Playbook · Shopify gift message not saving
The gift message is entered, then disappears from the order.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose gift message or gift note is visible but not carried through to cart, checkout, or the final Admin order. This is distinct from a gift option that never appears and from a generic cart note that fails. DIY-first: hold one SKU and one unique marker constant, trace the write path, then make the smallest safe repair. No earnings claims.

01
A visible gift message is not a missing gift option.
This page is for a gift note or gift message field that accepts text but loses it before or after checkout. If shoppers cannot see the field at all, use gift-wrapping-option-missing. If a normal cart or order note is the failing field, use cart-note-not-saving.
Write down the exact product, variant, cart state, device, browser, Market, customer status, gift-message app or theme section, and where the message vanishes. Do not diagnose from Theme Editor preview alone.
02
Trace one unique marker from theme to order.
Enter a marker such as GIFT-TEST-01 on the live published theme. Inspect the form field name and whether it writes a line-item property or cart attribute. Watch the cart update request and response, then confirm the cart drawer and full cart agree before clicking checkout.
- Check that the field is not outside the submitted product form and that its name is not overwritten during re-render.
- Check AJAX cart updates, debounce timing, and the checkout handoff instead of assuming a visible textarea was persisted.
- Compare cart attributes, line-item properties, checkout UI extension state, and the final Admin order.
- Test one clean session with duplicate gift-note or cart-attribute apps disabled temporarily; never expose tokens or customer data in screenshots.
03
Repair the smallest confirmed write path.
Fix only the confirmed owner: restore the field name and form placement, include the property or attribute in the AJAX payload, wait for the update before checkout, map the value in the supported checkout extension, or remove the second writer that clears it. Publish to the current theme only after a preview proves the change.
Keep gift messages optional and transparent. Do not silently copy a private note into customer-facing email, bypass consent, or inject an unknown script. If a gift-wrap app owns the field, use its supported mapping and version rather than adding a parallel hidden input.
04
Retest the live journey and the final order.
Repeat with a fresh cart on desktop and mobile: type the marker, blur the field, wait for the cart update, open and close the drawer, revisit the cart, proceed to checkout, and place a controlled test order if appropriate. Confirm the message lands in the intended order field, not merely in a transient cart response.
Retest with a second variant, a multi-item cart, a different Market, and the gift message left blank. A field that never appears remains gift-wrapping-option-missing; a generic order note remains cart-note-not-saving.
05
When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if one field has one confirmed theme, AJAX, mapping, or app conflict. Keep the before/after payload and order evidence, then retest the live published theme.
Pay $997 one-time when the work is wiring the Shopify stack you already use: lead capture, ops alerts, and a checkout-ready workflow. Nico at Latch AI Ops installs it on one live store in 72 hours after collaborator access is in. You are buying the install, not more orders, a gift-message guarantee, or an earnings claim.
