Playbook · Shopify checkout note missing

The checkout note is missing where the buyer expects to see it.

Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose checkout note is hidden, unavailable, blank, or not reaching the completed order. DIY-first: identify the actual checkout surface, test a fresh buyer path, and repair the smallest confirmed break. This is distinct from a cart note / order note, cart attributes, line-item properties, and a checkout UI extension. No earnings claims.

01

Checkout note vs cart note and other buyer text.

Use this page when the buyer should type or see a native note on the checkout surface, or when that checkout note should be visible on the resulting order. A cart note is collected before checkout; cart attributes are key/value data on the cart; line-item properties belong to one product line; and a checkout UI extension is an app-provided surface with its own placement and eligibility.

Write down the exact checkout URL or step, market, language, customer state, device, theme, checkout version, and order-side field you expected. “The note is missing” is not enough to choose a fix: the control may be unavailable by design, hidden by a setting, present but not submitted, or saved under a different order field.

02

Prove whether the checkout note is absent or lost.

Use the published storefront in a private window. Add a product and enter a harmless unique value such as CHECKOUT-NOTE-TEST-2026-09-16. Do not use customer personal data or a real secret. Capture the checkout screen and use DevTools Network or the extension’s documented event log to compare the value before payment with the completed test order.

  • There is no note control: check checkout settings, plan eligibility, market, language, selling channel, and whether an app or extension is meant to provide it.
  • The control is visible but the value never leaves the browser: inspect the field, validation, disabled state, extension event, Console errors, and the last request before navigation.
  • The value is submitted but the order is blank: inspect the order note, additional details, cart attributes, and line-item properties separately; confirm the app or mapping did not clear it.
  • Only one market or device fails: compare checkout configuration, customer privacy state, localization, extension targeting, and cached assets before editing the global configuration.

Keep the test timestamp, checkout step, harmless value, request or event evidence, and order-side result. This makes a small, reversible repair possible.

03

Check checkout settings, plan, market, and language.

First verify the native checkout note is enabled for the store and is available on the plan and checkout experience being tested. Confirm you are looking at the published checkout configuration, not only an editor preview. If the store has multiple markets, payment methods, languages, or domains, test the exact one where the report occurred.

Review checkout and customer-information settings, market assignments, localization strings, and any checkout customization that can hide, rename, or replace the field. A note hidden by a conditional rule is not the same bug as a note that submits and disappears. Record the setting before changing it, then make one change at a time and publish it.

Do not assume cart attributes are a substitute for a checkout note. If the business needs structured data such as delivery date or gift detail, use a documented attribute or extension path and verify the destination in Admin Orders. Keep free text out of sensitive fields and never collect more personal data than the order workflow requires.

04

Trace checkout UI extensions and app conflicts.

If an app supplies the control, open its configuration and verify the extension is installed, enabled on the live checkout, assigned to the tested market and checkout profile, and placed at a supported target. An extension can be healthy in the editor while absent from the live checkout because it is unpublished, targeted to another profile, or ineligible for the buyer state.

Check the browser Console and Network panel for errors, blocked requests, failed validation, and a second app that rerenders the same area. Reproduce with unrelated extensions disabled only if that is a reversible diagnostic. Do not remove a production app or change payment settings without recording the current configuration and confirming the suspected conflict.

If the real issue is a checkout UI extension block that never mounts, use the extension-not-loading playbook. If the issue began during an upgrade, use the Checkout Extensibility upgrade playbook. If the buyer typed in the cart rather than checkout, use the cart-note playbook.

05

Retest the order-side destination.

Start with a fresh cart and the same harmless unique value. Test the actual buyer flow on desktop and mobile, and on the market and language that matter. Confirm the note survives the transition from storefront to checkout, a refresh if supported, shipping and payment steps, and the final order creation. Do not infer success from a value that remains visible in an editor or browser screen.

Open the completed test order and check Notes, Additional details, cart attributes, and line-item properties individually. Verify the support, fulfillment, or alert workflow that is supposed to read the note. Remove the test value and repeat once so stale checkout state does not look like a fix. Record the configuration revision, extension version, request or event, and final destination.

06

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.

Stay DIY when one setting, market assignment, extension target, validation rule, or order mapping is the confirmed cause. Make the smallest change, publish it, run the fresh-checkout test, and document the result.

Pay $997 one-time when the missing note is a symptom of broader wiring across the Shopify stack: lead capture, ops alerts, and a checkout-ready workflow on one live store. Nico at Latch AI Ops installs it in 72 hours after collaborator access is in. You are buying the install, not an earnings promise, more orders, or legal certification.
